Third Sunday After the Epiphany: Year B

GATHERING MUSIC: Erica KesslerJerusalem, My Happy Home

Traditional, arr., by Anna Laura Page

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING PRAYER (in unison):Teach us anew, rock of our salvation, how your kingdom has come near. As you called Simon and Andrew long ago, call us to be your disciples this day, that we might find refuge and strength as we face the destructive forces of our lives.Grant us the strength to wait for you in silence, that we might meet you in the subterranean chambers of our souls. For in you we rest secure, in joy we abide in the holy love. Amen

CALL TO WORSHIP:Did you hear the good news? The kingdom of God has drawn near. Do you trust the good news? We place our trust in Jesus, the one who calls us to follow him. Do you have the courage to leave your former lives behind? We put our faith in the Lord, our rock and our salvation. Trust the Lord. We will follow Jesus.

HYMN: The Summons TFWS 2130

INVITATION TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison):Mighty God, the words of your Son echo in our ears: “The kingdom of God has come near; repent and believe in the good news.” How we long to set aside the advice of others and put our trust firmly in you. How we yearn for the faithfulness of James and John, who immediately left their boats to follow Jesus. We know our fearful hearts, O God. We know how far we are from being able to trust a complete stranger – especially with our very lives. We hope to one day have their devotion, even as we cannot find the nerve to leave familiar paths behind. Renew us, Holy One, and bless us with your steadfast love, that we might truly live as people who have seen your kingdom draw near. AMEN.

Moment of Silence

WORDS OF ASSURANCE:Just as God forgave the people of Nineveh when they repented and turned from their ways, so God will forgive us also, when we turn to walk in the paths of life. Pour out your hearts before God, our refuge and our strength. Pour out your hearts and find peace.

HYMN: Softly and Tenderly UMH 348 (1,2,4)

JOYS AND CONCERNS

PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER (in unison):Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN. OFFERTORY MUSIC Erica Kessler

INVITATION TO THE OFFERING

DOXOLOGY: Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow UMH 94 OFFERTORY PRAYER (Unison): God of abundance, you teach us the dangers of setting our hearts on earthly riches. May these offerings be symbols of our faith in your bounty, and of our commitment to follow your call in our lives, wherever you may lead. AMEN.

CHILDREN’S MOMENT

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON:JONAH 3:1 – 5, 10

A reading from the prophet Jonah…

1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

THE GOSPEL LESSON:MARK 1:14 – 20

Hear the Word of God in the Gospel according to Mark the 1st chapter, beginning with the 14th verse…

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Joys & Concerns

Our joys and concerns are from last weeks service and any emails since:

Please keep Bruce Jacobson’s mother Lucille and all of the patients that live on the 2nd floor of Fairhaven Nursing Home in your prayers. In the past week and a half 18 people have come down with covid.

Carol Risenhoover has a weakness in her legs and on Tuesday, she is going to have a test to see if there is nerve damage in her back that is causing it. Please keep her in your prayers.

Keith Sodergren is in the hospital because of a severe UTI. He is doing better and hopes to come home possible on Wednesday. Please keep him in your prayers.

Dougal and Cindy Whitmer’s son-in-law Clint (whose step brother committed suicide.) I sent out the email last week) had a medical emergency but didn’t have to go to the hospital. Please keep all of the family in your prayers.

Terri Holland’s brother Matt is in the ICU after an emergency. He had a heart attack one year ago. Dave said he is doing a little better. Prayers are needed.

We are glad to report that Pastor Judith is feeling better and we pray she continues her recovery.

Reuben and Rosa Mendoza from our 2nd congregation continue to need our prayers during their health struggles.
