Mutualism between Evergreen

Students and the Community

In the field of biology, mutualism refers to two

different types of organisms that have a relationship

in which they both benefit from the activity of the

other. The Center for Community Based Learning

and Action (CCBLA) promotes mutualistic rela-

tionships by supporting student internships with

nonprofit and government organizations. These

internship opportunities allow students to gain prac-

tical experience, apply their knowledge, and learn;

in turn, organizations benefit from the personal en-

gagement and, occasionally, gain a permanent em-

ployee.

In addition to internships, CCBLA promotes mu-

tualism through New Student Orientation Action

Day, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth, Evergreen/

Olympia Tutoring Collaboration, Thurston County

Food Bank and other initiatives that engage stu-

dents and strengthen the community.

CCBLA allows us to serve the community and

the community to serve us; what could Greener

than that?

“Evergreen, the College Connecting to

Communities and the Public Trust:

There is a strong movement in and around colleges/

universities that invites and challenges those institu-

tions to be more publicly engaged and accountable.

You can see this in Black Lives Matter challenging how

educational institutions could/should be more honora-

ble and accountable.”-Faculty Emeritus, Lin Nelson
