CEYEThe Center for Excellence in Youth Education
The Center for Excellence in Youth EducationThe Center for Excellence in Youth Education (CEYE) is housed within the
Center for Multi-Cultural & Community Affairs (CMCA) at the Icahn School of
Medicine at Mount Sinai. Founded by Lloyd R. Sherman, EdD, CEYE
provides educational pipeline programs for grades 7 – 16, for historically
underrepresented or economically disadvantaged students. CMCA’s CEYE aims to
increase underrepresented minorities in medicine and other healthcare professions by
preparing students for entry into the postsecondary degree programs within scientific,
technical, health-related fields, and the licensed professions.
Programs are offered throughout the academic year to specifically partnered public schools,
and opened up to all NYC public school students during the summer months. CEYE is
sustained through federal and state funding, along with occasional private donations.
Private donations have come from philanthropists, alumni and other interested parties,
but no formal fundraising is conducted.
Summer ProgramsSummer Research Courses (rising 10th, 11th, & 12th graders):Zebrafish Toxicology – students learn to evaluate the
effects of a toxicant on a living organism. Participants will
be able to describe the impact of environmental hazards on
human health, and to experience first-hand the process that
scientists use to investigate environmental health problems.
Fruit Fly Genomics - This laboratory project program
teaches the fundamentals of designing and carrying out all
aspects of a scientific investigation. The live materials select-
ed and the equipment used will be simple. The intent of the
course is to involve students in each step of the scientific
process through engagements in a descriptive investigation.
Nanotechnology - This course is designed to introduce
students to the world of nanotechnology and its biomedical
applications. In this course students learn about the new
science of nanotechnology and how its applications can
change the world.
All summer research courses require students to maintain logbooks and complete pre-posttests, oral presentations, and final presentations.
Summer Hospital and Laboratory Placements (rising 12th graders): This program is designed to
further expose students to health careers and to enhance
their basic science knowledge and language arts skills.
Participants will spend each day in a hospital or laboratory
placement for the purpose of study and career explora-
tion. Studies will include library research and involvement
in a weekly seminar. Working with health professionals in
the hospital environment will not only help to determine a
career direction but also teach students about the ways of
the working world.
Students must keep a log book, complete a final paper and oral presentation.
1975Preparing students for entry into the
postsecondary degree programs within
scientific, technical, health-related fields
and the licensed professions
Academic Year ProgramsDay-With-A-Scientist (7th & 8th graders): students take
part in full day immersion experiences in the theme-based,
Day-With-A-Scientist (DWAS) series. Each DWAS orients
students to a different major organ in the body, such as the
heart, brain, kidney, liver, or the eye. Sessions include organ
dissection labs, presentations of organ function in health and
disease, diagnosis, treatments and prevention incorporated
into discussions, visits to departments, clinics, and research
labs. Each DWAS includes a specific study guide, pre-post-
test, student assessment of each program element and exit
oral presentations.
Biotechnology & Medical Research Course (11th & 12th graders): This two-year program consists of
advanced laboratory experiences and clinical internships.
The first-year course is an introduction to the basic concepts
and laboratory skills used in the field of DNA and technology.
During the second year, participants are placed individually
in two clinical or laboratory internships at the Mount Sinai
Medical Center.
Pre-posttests throughout the semester, oral presentations, written research papers, debates, and logbooks required.
All summer programs are full day 6 week courses

If you are economically disadvantaged, you may be eligible for STEP. Please refer to the guidelines below and provide the required documentation. For the purpose of STEP, a student is considered a New York State resident if he or she resides in New York State and has lived in New York State for the last two terms of school prior to entry into the STEP Program, or has resided in New York State for at least 12 months immediately preceding the first term for which he or she is seeking participation in the STEP Program. The economic eligibility standards set forth in this Appendix apply only at the time of application to the Science and Technology Entry Program.
