Our Mission

The mission of CREATE! is to help rural populations in the developing world cope with water, food and fuel shortages resulting from the impact of climate change on their communities.

Brief History of CREATE!

CREATE! was founded in 2008 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our work is founded on the principle that all people have a right to water, food, shelter, energy and the means to earn a living.

We work with village populations to meet these needs through a culturally respectful, participatory process grounded in our belief that people must have a stake in their own development and contribute towards solving their own problems.

Water ProjectsWe work with village communities to rehabilitate and dig new wells that are as much as 150 deep; install solar pumping systems to pump water from the wells; and construct gravity fed irrigation systems for year-round crop cultivation.

Page 7: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

Due to a short and increasingly unreliable 3-month rainy season...

...water is in short supply.

Page 8: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...and drawing water by hand is hard work!

Page 9: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

We work with traditional well diggers to access water that is more than 100 feet below the ground.

Page 10: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

We use solar-powered pumping systems...

Page 11: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...to provide easy access to water for gardening and household

use.

Page 12: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

With CREATE!’s support, community members construct gravity-fed irrigation systems to conveniently distribute water throughout the gardens...

Page 13: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...making it easy for women to water the plants.

Page 14: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

A scarce water supply and a short rainy season have

made year-round crop cultivation nearly impossible.

Page 15: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

Cooperative Community GardensAfter ensuring access to ample quantities of free water, we make it possible for cooperative groups – primarily women and girls – to grow crops on a year-round basis for the first time ever.

CREATE!’s Agriculture Specialists provide training on sustainable, irrigated, year-round agriculture.

Page 17: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

With support from CREATE!, each group uses simple tools to clear, fence and tend community vegetable gardens that provide healthy food for their families as well as produce for sale at local markets, providing a much needed source of household income.

The women learn to grow and transplant seedlings...

Page 19: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...to consistently water and carefully tend the crops...

Page 20: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...to yield a bountiful harvest.

Page 21: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

Traditional cooking on open fires...

Page 22: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...contributes to widespread deforestation.

Page 23: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

We teach women and

girls to build

fuel-efficient

cook stoves using free,

locally available materials.

Energy and Environment

Page 24: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

Firewood consumption is reduced by 50 to 70 percent...

Page 25: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

...food cooks more quickly...

.... and more safely.

Page 26: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

We work with village communities to establish tree nurseries in cooperative community gardens.

Page 27: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

The tree nurseries provide thousands of seedlings for reforestation...

...as well as fruit and nut trees for food and income generation.

Self Sufficiency for Village WomenThieneba, Senegal

Page 30: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

How support from Dining for Women will be used:

Page 31: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

To install a solar pumping system and integrated, gravity-fed irrigation network on the newly dug well for water.

Women and girls will have access to ample quantities of free water for their garden and will no longer have to carry water by the bucketful more than a kilometer from their village.

Page 32: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

To provide training on year-round, sustainable crop production and poultry raising to the Cooperative Garden Group.

Local non-GMO seeds, agricultural tools and supplies, as well as materials for fencing the site and constructing a seed nursery and poultry shed, will be supplied.

Page 33: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

For the first time ever, women and girls in Thieneba will be able to grow vegetables on a year-round basis, providing healthy food for their families and a much needed source of household income from selling produce at local markets.

Page 34: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

To teach women and girls to build and use fuel-efficient cook stoves; some of them will become trainers and will teach other women and girls in their community to build stoves.

Firewood consumption will be reduced by more than half, reducing deforestation and the amount of time women and girls spend searching for firewood. Scarce household income will be saved as women will not need to buy as much firewood to cook meals for their families..

Page 35: Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technology for the Environment

To provide leadership and small business training to support self-sufficiency for women and girls.

Women and girls will also develop leadership skills by assuming various responsibilities – such as coordinating garden work, setting up watering schedules, and organizing for selling their produce at local markets.

Thank you, Dining For Women, for supporting CREATE! in helping women and girls improve their lives – and the lives of their community –in Thieneba, Senegal!
