PARENT EMAIL UPDATE - 1.20.2012
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I hope you and your family had an enjoyable holiday sea-
son and are enjoying a positive beginning to 2012! CGHS
is now two weeks into second semester, and I hope your
student has had a strong start. The second semester brings
many memorable events and activities for students and
their families: National Honor Society inductions, prom,
graduation, Senior Honors Night, athletic events and tour-
naments, spring musical, Festival of the Arts, etc. I look
forward to all of these activities, and I hope you will attend
and support our students too.
The scheduling process for students just started last
week. Counselors met with each grade level, handing out
various forms and explaining the online scheduling proce-
dure. I encourage you to speak to your student about these
meetings and the information presented. Ask your student
about his/her academic, post-secondary, and career goals
and let those objectives guide the course selection pro-
cess. Each student will meeting with her/her counselor
during February and March.
Last Friday, 10th and 11th grade students received im-
portant results from tests taken in the fall. Sophomores
received PLAN (practice ACT) and PSAT (practice SAT)
results. Juniors received only PSAT results. The individu-
al student reports will give you an idea about whether your
student is currently on track to be college ready. Ask your
student for his/her results sheet. Use the sheets to help you
make decisions about course selection and college prepara-
tion. Sophomores will take the PSAT once again in Octo-
ber 2012. If you have questions about the results, please
contact your student’s counselor.
CGHS is hosting a second round of Parent-Teacher Con-
ferences on Thursday, February 9th. A few details are
shared in this newsletter, but more will be forthcoming at
the end of January. Please make plans to visit some of
your student’s teachers.
I want to thank you for your continued support of CGHS—
Tradition. Opportunity. Excellence.
Best Wishes,
Matt Shockley,
Principal

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS Each May, the College Board sets aside a two-week Advanced
Placement Exam period where students will have an oppor-
tunity to sit for a test, demonstrate their command of the re-
spective material, and potentially earn credit towards their
work as an undergraduate. As of the start of the 2011-2012
school year, any student achieving a score of (3) or higher will
receive college credit at Indiana public universities and colleg-
es. Students risk nothing by taking the exams. Students deter-
mine which institutions, if any, receive AP exam results.
To sign up for an AP exam(s), students should see our AP
coordinator, Mr. Brad Timmons, or the respective AP teacher,
and complete the test registration form. The form should then
be hand-delivered to Mr. Timmons who will order exam(s) on
your student’s behalf. The deadline is Friday, February 17
regardless if the student took the course first semester or are
currently enrolled second semester. All test registrations must

SAFE TEEN DRIVING PROGRAM
AT CGHS APRIL 14
Center Grove High School SADD
Club is partnering with the Hoosi-
er BMW Car Club to bring the one
day Tire Rack Street Survival
program to the High School cam-
pus on Saturday, April 14th. Tire Rack Street Survival is a
unique program built upon the premise that ‘safe driving is
learned by doing.’ From the outset, Street Survival has always
been hands-on and designed to go a little bit beyond the typical
high school driver’s education program. The program teaches
students to avoid collisions by thinking and looking ahead and
learning the basics of car control which enhances their enjoy-
ment of driving and improves their competence as driv-
ers. During a Street Survival course, students learn how their
actions govern their own car’s response and as a result, become
safer and more effective drivers out on the road. Tire Rack
Street Survival helps protect your most precious cargo by Pro-
moting Safe Teen Driving! The course fee is $75 and space is
limited to 45 student participants. All registered students must
have a valid driver’s license by April 14. Students who hold a
learner’s permit only will not be allowed to register.
For any Center Grove Families who are interested in registering
a student, there is a special registration link that has been set up
for our students only:

For more information about the program you may visit the Tire
Rack Street Survival Website at this link (http://
