CENTRAL OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED

Monday, September 4th for Labor Day

Fall

No choice in the matter of drink I had no solution for my alcoholic malady before coming to AA, because I didn’t understand the nature of my problem. I had always considered that my problem was the first drink -- that was wrong! My problem has never been the first drink because it was then too late. My problem started long before! My problem started with savoring the next shot of whisky, or perhaps a snifter of Courvoisier (if I was in the chips). Said consideration invoked a powerful yes or no debating society severely affecting my alcoholic-decision-making-apparatus; you can easily guess which side was awarded the laurel wreath!

Thus, the decision became surreptitiously embedded in my mind. I sometimes would push it down till the weekend because one drink often meant missing work the next day. Nevertheless, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, my fate was sealed, I was bound to drink soon because there existed no choice in the matter of drink. This was John Barleycorn’s cunning, powerful and patient obsession process: contemplation – debate – decision – first drink, followed by the phenomenon of craving with all the predictably disastrous consequences. I was just as powerless before I took a drink as I was afterward. This must be what they mean by the phrase: “Hopeless and helpless!”

But at six months sober, a wonderful new sponsor taught me how to develop a spiritual experience as the result of living AAs Twelve Steps. This exciting inner transformation eventually freed me from the necessity of debating whether to drink or not to drink. Page 85 tells us that “the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us.” I no longer have the need to “think the drink through” as was the case in early recovery because God has rewarded me with the same joyous release as had Bill Wilson and Bill Dotson (p. 191). I am no longer incarcerated in the devil’s prison of the mental obsession because “if I should drink” has been removed from my emotional vocabulary. Thank you, God! Bob S.

Volunteers answer the hotline from 9AM to 1PM or

1PM to 5PM Monday through Friday at Central Office. We are

looking for volunteers who can substitute in the absence of the regular volunteers. This is a great way to be of service and to help the

alcoholic who still suffers.

*Volunteers need a minimum of six months of sobriety to answer the hotline.

Our Dilemma

Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live,

and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously.

But where and how were we to find this Power? Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its

main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your

problem. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 45

“ Made direct amends to such people wherever

possible, except when to do so would injure them or

others.”

Good judgment, a careful sense of timing, courage, and

prudence—these are the qualities we shall need when

we take Step Nine.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions pg. 83 -

The Nineth Step

The Nineth Tradition

“A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may

create service boards or committees directly responsible

to those they serve.”

If nobody does the group’s chores, if the area’s telephone rings

unanswered, if we do not reply to our mail, then A.A. as we know it

would stop. -Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions pg. 175-

The Nineth Concept

“Good service leadership at all levels is indispensable

for our future functioning and safety. Primary world

service leadership, once exercised by the founders,

must necessarily be assumed by the trustees.”

“ A leader in A.A. service is therefore a man (or Woman)

who can personally put principles, plans and policies

into such dedicated and effective action that the rest of

us want to back him and help him with his job.”

Grapevine “Often simplicity yields to complexity as the human mind grasps a great revelation, and places its own particular interpretation upon it. All too often the revelation becomes lost in the maze of human ideas, interpretations, and suggestions. Thus have great movements risen, flourished for a season, and died. But AA has steadily progressed through the labyrinth of complexity, carefully avoiding luring temptations of wealth, professionalism, and fame as a healer of one of mankind's most deadly diseases. Dr. Bob who responded to that original phone call, and heard and accepted the message from Bill, has left ringing in our ears, the vital admonition: 'Keep it simple.'"

IV. Trusted Servant Reports A. Chairperson Report – Kathryn C

Welcome to the June CCF Delegate’s meeting! Thank you for being here today. Tomorrow is the picnic! I hope you all have plans to come out and have some fun! Elections appeared on the horizon this month! We will hold officer elections on November 18. This meeting will be from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM so plan accordingly. Just a note that I am terming out this year so please feel free to ask questions about what I do if you are interested. I think we are ready for some new energy and enthusiasm! Another thing that showed up on the radar is the 2018 budget. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the actual process. I know someone is going to ask when that starts and I believe it is October but, I am sure the Treasurer will have more info ne xt month. It has been a long, hot summer. Thank you for suiting up and showing up! Today is a great day to be sober! Kathryn Caldwell CCF Chairperson, 2017 [email protected] 916-538-9958 “...principles before personalities.”

B. Assistant Chair/CNIA Liaison – Amy T I attended the CNIA 07 meeting at East Yolo Fellowship this morning and reminded them of the CCF Annual Picnic on Sunday.

C. Office Operations Committee – Carlos A

There was no quorum, so there was no OOC business conducted.

D. Office Manager’s Report – Rae W August 15, 2017

1. Semi-annual inventory for the period ending June 30th took place on Sunday, July 9th at 9A.M. Results were within acceptable

shrinkage limits.

2. Second Quarter Payroll and Sales tax returns, deposits and reports were completed by the due date.

3. On Friday, August 25th, the Northern CA Office Managers’ Workshop will be held in Oakland.

4. 2017 National AA Technology Workshop will be held in Sacramento September 8-10. There will be a session on Central Offices and

technology issues.

5. See you at Sunday’s annual picnic!

And all is well….Rae W.

E. Treasurer’s Report –John G

In the big picture: we are okay, no worry about peerless worth. The office is run well. We took a $3,000 loss for the month but are

still in the black for the year. August with the picnic revenue should offset the loss in July. We had a returned check that was made

good by the group, so no write off for bad debts.

The 2018 budget will be close to the 2017. We’ll take the first eight months of 2017, divide by 8, then multiply by 12, plug in the picnic

and any other known special events and there it is.

F. Special Needs Chairperson’s Report – Erik C

1. ASL coordinator: We have 6 ASL interpreters covering 3AA […] meetings. There is a small deaf population i n

AA […], Kathy wants to create a website to direct deaf members to ASL inter preted meetings with a l ink to

our website.

2. Online meetings are now published on our website. Please visit our website and check it out. norcalaccess.org

3. Our committee is moving forward looking at accessibility issues within our Sacramento area. We will be visiting meetings listed in the CCF directory as accessible and bringing back results to our committee only. No contact with meeting, just

information gathering.

By The Way CCFAA Delegate’s Meeting September 2017

CCFAA Page 12

1. We will be attending the NCCAA meeting on October 13-15

2. We are in the process of requesting funding from their excess funds they distribute at end of year.

3. We will be attending the CNIA election Assembly November 17-19.

4. The going rate for ASL interpreters is $100 per hour with a 2 hour min.

5. Our treasurer requested to step down. Rick volunteered to take over treasurer position. This leaves the

recording secretary position open.

In Gratitude,

Erik C.

A visiting Pastor was attending a men's breakfast in a Mississippi Farm County. He asked one of the impres-sive older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began------"Lord, I hate buttermilk.

The Pastor opened one eye and wondered to himself where this was going. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, "Lord, I hate lard." Now the Pastor was worried. However, without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on, "And Lord, you know I don't care much for raw white flour."

Just as the Pastor was ready to stand and stop everything, the farmer continued, "But Lord, when you mix 'em all to-gether and bake 'em up, I do love fresh biscuits. So, Lord, when things come up we don't like, when life gets hard, when we just don't understand what you are sayin' to us, we just need to relax and wait 'till You are done mixin', and probably it will be somethin' even better than biscuits.

Making Amends When describing step nine in the big book it says that “if we are painstaking about this phase of our development

we will be amazed before we are half way through”, and then it goes on to list the promises. The information in the

12X12 is a lot more direct about the different approaches we could take and tries to encourage us to exercise

caution before we rush in and make some major blunders. This suggestion, I think, can’t be taken lightly. I have

heard many horror stories about well meaning people, wanting to put this step behind them, ran to their friends

and loved ones and disclosed things that destroyed any trust they may have had in the alcoholic.

Good judgment, a careful sense of timing, courage, and prudence---these are the qualities we shall need when we take

Step Nine. Sometimes we read the headline but fail to read the entire article. If we do this when we go through

the steps we can do more damage to our already strained relationships. Making promises, to my close friends and

family, that I’m not sure I can keep, usually fall on deaf ears, but an honest recognition of my past mistakes,

without going into too many details, at this time, and a sincere determination to give the program my best effort

with the understanding that my behavior will be the measure of my success, is a more acceptable approach. We

know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

After we have put some time between us and our last

debacles, we can revisit those amends and go into details

about each event, only after we have run it by an

experienced and trusted advisor.

Rushing into an amend that could bring hardship to our

unsuspecting family, or to other third parties, is another

mistake that people sometimes make. In Step

Nine in the 12X12 it says that “WE cannot, for example,

unload a detailed account of extramarital adventuring

upon the shoulders of our unsuspecting wife or

husband”. I would also include Major financial or

work related amends that may result in losing your job,

or create heavy financial difficulties for the family.

These should be put off until everyone involved is in

agreement, and then, only after talking to someone to

make sure that you are not overlooking anything.

How about all those relatives and friends that we haven’t seen in awhile, but still have an uncomfortable feeling

about the way we left that relationship? These people only have a snapshot of what we used to be like. They don’t

see the day to day changes that we have made in our lives and they assume that we are the same as when we

made our last major mistake. For this type of situations, I would consider a slow but sincere process of

reestablishing contact with those involved. I once suggested that, using the opportunity on Birthdays and

Holidays, of sending cards can be a nice way to reestablish contact with these people, with a simple “been

thinking about you, hope things are going well for you, Love…….” Sending these out at each opportunity for a year

or two with no return address, and no expectations, and at some time in the future, you will have to attend a

wedding, graduation, or funeral… where you will see them again, and you will be amazed at what will happen. My

experience has been that the cards create curiosity and that sometimes causes these people to talk to each other

and they find out that you are trying hard to mend your ways and it tends to disarm them. Now, that would be the

time to put these things to rest. Keeping in mind that, if I can’t add the kicker “I regret what I did, and I don’t do

that anymore” then maybe I’m not ready to make that amend yet.

I hope these ideas will help you to understand, that most amends can be made in a positive way and the results

are so much better than we ever could have expected. We must do these things if we hope to experience the

promises listed on pages 83/84 in the Big Book. (INTO ACTION) Rick R.

Three Pertinent Ideas

Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the agnostic, and our personal adventures before

and after make clear three pertinent ideas:

(a) That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.

(b) That probably no human power could have relieved our

alcoholism. (c) That God could and would if

He were sought. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 60

Fully Concede

We learned that we had to fully

concede to our innermost selves

that we were alcoholics. This is the

first step in recovery.

The delusion that we are like other

people, or presently may be, has to

be smashed. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 30
