Reducing the risk of hypocalcemia, convenient with proven results,
thats the beauty of Bovikalc
Bovikalc delivers 43g of available calcium in each bolus:
Calcium chloride (fast release). Calcium sulphate (slow release).
The bolus dissolves in the rumen within 30 minutes and helps to raise blood calcium levels over a prolonged period of time in freshening cows.
Managing Hypocalcemia on Large Dairies
SPONSORED BY BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM VETMEDICA, INC.
Hypocalcemia (low blood calcium) is an important determinant of fresh cow health and milk production. The start of each new lactation challenges a dairy cows ability to maintain nor-mal blood calcium concentrations. Milk (including colostrum) is very rich in calcium, and cows must quickly shift their priorities to adjust for this sudden calcium outfl ow. A cow does not necessarily have to become recumbent (down) to be negatively aff ected by hypocalcemia. A low clinical milk fever rate will often mask an underlying subclinical hypocalcemia problem on a dairy. With or without obvious clinical signs, hypocalcemia has been linked to a variety of secondary problems in post-fresh cows. This presentation will discuss underlying mechanisms, therapy and prevention of hypocalcemia.

How many years have you at-tended the Central Plains Dairy Expo? Twelve plus years.
What are three things that you are looking forward to most with the 2012 Central Plains Dairy Expo? The trade show with all the exhibitors. I enjoy the chance to meet and talk with fel-low dairymen. The welcome re-ception and concert are always a great time.
Describe how you spend a typi-cal day at the Central Plains Dairy Expo. Typically, I try to visit all the booths and, on occasion, I will attend some of the seminars.
What seminars or booths are you especially interested in seeing this year? I am going to visit each booth and check out different ways to improve our operation. I am also looking forward to attend-ing the seminar, Successful Dairies Today Its the Little Things that Count!
What have you learned from a previous CPDE that youve taken back and incorporated into your farm? Going to a show like this gives you the opportunity to look at different ways to improve your operation.
Tell us about your farm. We own and operate my parents farm. My wife, Sharon, and I, along with our sons, Tim and David, farm 1,300 acres, milk around 60 cows, feed out some cattle and have a beef cow/calf operation.

How many years have you attended the Cen-tral Plains Dairy Expo? We have attended the Expo on two occasions.
What are three things that you are looking forward to most with the 2012 Central Plains Dairy Expo? We enjoy looking at the exhibits for new ideas on nutrition, equipment and cow com-fort. We enjoy attending some of the seminars. We focus on business management and outlook and nutrition. We also like talking to exhibitors and seminar presenters.
Describe how you spend a typical day at the Central Plains Dairy Expo. On a typical day, we spend about half the time visiting exhibits and the other half attending seminars.
What seminars or booths are you especial-ly interested in seeing this year? There are three seminars that look interesting: 1) Michael Boehlje on building an ag business, 2) growing replacement heifers and 3) feed ef ciency or diet cost. There may be some other seminars we may check out.
What have you learned from a previous CPDE that youve taken back and incorporated into
your farm? We learned about the teat dippers we are using now. Also, we established contacts with some of our commodity suppliers and equipment dealers.
Tell us about your farm. On our dairy, we try to treat each cow as an individual in her daily routine. We have an excellent herdsman, Duane
Burke, who does the breeding and most of the herd health work. This allows Marcy and me to concentrate on our work responsibilities. We farm about 500 acres of non-irrigated corn silage and alfalfa. We have an outstanding team of em-ployees to help us and to allow us to be able to attend the Expo.
