About Henri Matisse:Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in a small town in France. His parents owned a general store and wanted Henri to take over the family business but Henri decided to become a lawyer instead. At 20, he got very sick and had to be admitted to the hospital. His mother bought him a box of paints and from that day on, Henri decided to be an artist.

Matisse was called the “King of Color”. He recognized that color played a big part in how we perceive life. Later in life, Matisse developed cancer and was bed ridden. He still created art in his bed by using a bamboo stick tipped with chalk. He drew on the ceiling! He also started cutting out shapes with scissors and called this art form, “drawing with scissors.”

Set-up:1. If not already covered, cover students’ desks with newspaper2. At each student’s desk place:

12” x 18” piece of paper Black crayon (students should get it before going to carpet for PPT) Condiment lid Brush Paper towel

3. At each pod of desks place: Place 3 paper plates Place 2 palettes of paint each of the following colors (groups of 2-3 students will

share):oRedoYellowoGreenoBlue

Set 2 containers of water per 5-6 kids

Directions: You'll need to keep the kids together through most of these steps. Keep referring to the pictures in the power point to help model what they should be creating.

1. Start by having the students write their name on the back of the paper using. Tell them NOT to touch the paint until instructed.

2. Make sure students have their papers horizontal and not vertical. (Hamburger not hot dog in some classes.) Have students use a black crayon to trace an upside down paper plate to make the plate in the artwork and trace lids to make apples. TIP: Tracing is harder than you might think so take a minute to explain how to trace and how to position the plate on the paper. Have children draw 3 circles (apples) beside each other near the bottom of the plate. Then, they should start layering the apples behind the first apples. The children should be able to fit in about 7 apples. Then, they should free draw another circle around the original circle. This line is the outside of the bowl/plate. (5 minutes)

3. To paint, have children, start with a light color, like yellow, and paint one apple yellow. Then, without cleaning the brush, they should scoop up some red paint and paint over yellow apple. The results will be an orange apple with yellow and red streaks. Continue painting the other apples using a combination of yellow, green and red paint. You will need to remind the children that mixing red and green paint will

result in some brown. Unless they want a very bruised looking apples, only yellow should be mixed with green. (15minutes)

4. Allow children to paint the background a color that is not represented in the apples. Usually this is some form of green or blue. After painting the apples and background, pick a color for the plate. It may be a combination of the colors or a single color. Many of my students used one color for under the apples and another for the rim. (10 minutes)

5. As a final step, have children take black crayon and draw “V” stem on each apple.6. The kids have followed A LOT of steps so after the tables have been cleared, take five

minutes to play Kallie's Quick Draw. This is a very simple, fun game that allows kids to be creative, play, and talk to their friends. Be sure to let them talk about their drawings. This is an important part of the game. If you are in Mrs. Gold, be sure to point out that Kallie (with a K) made this game up, thus the name. Directions for the game are on the website.
