WORDS FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Being a United Methodist Woman is easy at times, but this isn’t one of them. One of our mission focuses is to stop the criminalization of communities of color. Racial Justice is a top priority. We have seen firsthand through the media the riots and marches because of the death of George Floyd.

There is in this country a deep-seated fear of “the other”, and it is reinforced every time something like this happens. Doesn’t everyone else see that we are all just people? The outside may look different from us, but the beautiful soul is just the same as ours. What a terrible world this would be if we all looked the same!

Change needs to happen. As United Methodist Women we have been aware for the need to change the status quo for quite a while. We have worked towards that change, but we need to do better, faster, and with more heart.

We need to have conversations with our local schools, police departments, and any other entity you can think of about racial inequality and the great divide which imperils our country right now.

There is no voice to speak up for the person of color right now. It is a vacuum which is being filled with violence and fear. United Methodist Women need to fill this vacuum. Speak up. State your informed opinions. Write an Op-Ed, DO SOMETHING!!

We are going to try very hard to have in person events this fall. Just stay tuned for info as individual churches need to decide what opening is going to look like. There are just so many “balls” that have to be juggled as most of you know.

I want to see you all, give you a hug, and tell you how much you mean to me. You are loved and appreciated. So for now take those words and feel the love that I have for each of you. Stay healthy. Best regards, Donna Jensen, President

Mission Moment

It has been suggested that as we have our meetings we also include a "Mission Moment" in the agenda. Of the 35 items listed on our Mission Today form, we could pick one and discuss briefly what it concerns. These are all opportunities to support missions. We can make a pledge or participate in second-mile giving. We can engage in prayer or attend events as mission. We can also use our printed resources as mission. I hope that each local has purchased the United Methodist Women Program Book, as many events of our year are covered in it, such as Pledge, World Thank Offering, and Call to Prayer and Self-Denial Services, and Bible and Spiritual Growth Studies. Each local organization keeps a record of programs used and can list these on our Mission Today form. This form, printed in the CTC UMW Resource Book, covers activities from August 1, 2019 to July 31, 2020. These forms are due August 15 in order to be included for recognition at the South District Annual Meeting. Please send one copy to Linda Beach, the CTC UMW Mission Coordinator for Education and Interpretation, one copy to Donna Jensen, South District President, and one copy to me, Shirleen Chandler (see page 3 above). We hope to have more local UMW organizations participate in this reporting this year.

GREETINGS MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH DISTRICT UMW,

This is a reminder to nurture your members through outreach by text, phone, email, or a note at

their door. What to talk about, you ask? I have plenty to share, so let me get some of my

projects right out there, in the open, good or bad, and even slightly skewed.

1. I have cleaned under all my sinks, replaced old plastic liners, thrown away empty bottles of detergent,

bleach, and various powders. And… can I display this fine work to anyone? NO!! What a bummer.

2. My closet is now neatly arranged – winter clothes in one area, golfing outfits together, arranged by color, by

size, (yes, sizes are changing even as I type), and by anything else that I can think of. Can I display this fine

work to my visitors? NO – there are no visitors!

3. I have organized my work space – very neat and tidy, now. I even straightened a book shelf. Want to come

and see it? Sorry, can’t.

4. I have truly thrown out 4 large garbage bags of stuff – just in the past week. Thought about a garage sale,

but that may never happen. So, if you need anything, anything at all, just let me know. I am here to answer

your call.

I could go on. My shoes are neatly stacked on my shoe shelf. My husband’s stuff is so organized that he can’t find a

thing. The refrigerator shelves are shiny, all the diet Coke is now on the same shelf. My yard is impeccable.

I know you are busy, too. Let your members know that you are thinking of them, and offer to give them comfort

and strength as they, and you, attack these little chores. We will all be better for it. Just think, once our homes are

in ship-shape condition, we can start all over (with a clean slate) and vow to never mess them up again – but we

probably will. I know I will.

Love to all,

Patty Lee Membership Nurture & Outreach Coordinator Central Texas Conference UMW

GETTING THE PLACE READY FOR YOU…

As I listened to my pastor’s online sermon on May 10, 2020 about Jesus having a place for us, I thought about what that means today in our UMW.

Do you have an inviting place for your members to come for your Local UMW meetings? Or does it look like a cold gray place? Do they know you really wanted them to come?

When we attend the Central Texas Conference UMW events, I know they are anxious and excited that we have arrived. The tables are decorated, we are greeted with friendly faces and always plenty of food. Not to mention, the great speakers and programs they provide. It’s the same for the South District UMW events. But…

Do you plan for your local General Meeting or circle meeting or group meeting? Is it inviting? Do you have a greeter that smiles as you walk in? Do you serve snacks, etc.? Is the program speaker prepared and excited to present her or his talk? Are the officers prepared?

Let’s be sure we plan and make it special for each UMW member and guest that comes to your meetings.

Here I am greeting Bonnie Elder as she arrives at our St. John’s UMW circle meeting last February. You will notice to the left a “Welcome Table’ which has a sign in sheet, a card to sign for a missionary from our Prayer Calendar, a place to put your Pledge to Mission, a place for loose change for the CTC UMW ‘Pocket Change Changes Lives’ and so much more. Below is a picture of one of our General Meeting/Luncheon where we decorated the tables to go along with the program theme. “Spiritual Growth through Praise” was the theme at this meeting. Did someone get the place ready for you?

HOW I BECAME A UNITED METHODIST WOMAN By Donna Jensen

When I was four months old my mom and dad moved to the small town of Sanford, Texas. Mother started going to WSCS, and, because she didn’t have a babysitter, she brought me. I was passed around from woman to woman at every meeting. Most of these women became my “grandmothers.” Instead of the usual two grandmothers, I had about six. And it was wonderful.

Growing up I helped Mom in any way I could, helping to set up, cook, clean, or give programs for WSCS. It was part of the service to my mom and my church.

When I became old enough to take part in WSCS, I was working full time, a wife, a mother, and newly arrived in Maryland. In short, I didn’t have time for any outside activities. My activities were fixing up our new house and trying to get enough rest to make it another day.

We tried out a church close to our house which wasn’t United Methodist and they came to the house to tell us what our “fair share” was going to be, and it was a lot of money. So, we didn’t go back.

After several months we started going to Lanham United Methodist Church in Lanham, MD. I didn’t have time for outside activities except Sunday, but I did try to support the United Methodist Women any way I could.

In 1977 I finally had to quit working because I had severe Fibromyalgia. I was in so much pain that holding down a full time job was impossible. The United Methodist Women contacted me and invited me to a meeting. That invitation led to me becoming the Treasurer (never again!) and eventually the President, both before and after we went to Bahrain for 8 years. I had many role models and great friends. Best of all I learned so much. The highlight of this phase of my being a United Methodist Woman was going to Assembly in 1982 in Philadelphia, PA. It was the most awesome moment of my life.

After that I’ve lived my life as a United Methodist Woman. How did you become one?? Tell Sharon Gibson, our Communications Coordinator.

Our stories are important.

SOUTH DISTRICT UMW EVENT ‘OFFERINGS’

South District UMW Events for 2018/2019 Offerings totaling $1,835.07 were voted on by the South District UMW Leadership Team on May 16, 2020 to be distributed to the following local organizations to help feed children and the homeless:

Clemente Boys and Girls Club of Killeen The money will go to the Sims Center in Nolanville for the Nolanville summer camp scholarships.

Nolanville summer camps is where it is needed most and they are feeding those children during their stay as well as grab and go dinners.

--Anne Ridley-Pleasant

Option House of Killeen The Option House is an emergency shelter in Killeen. I have worked with them many times in the past. Some kids

stay up there until we find placement and that can be up to 8 months. --Royce Aarhus

Helping Hands of Belton Helping Hands Ministry was founded in 1995 by the Belton Ministers' Fellowship, an ecumenical gathering of local ministers, to serve the Belton community with a centralized food pantry. In the beginning, individuals from several

local churches volunteered their time to serve 30 families in the basement of First United Methodist Church of Belton. The pantry later moved to First Christian Church in Belton, then eventually relocated to a house at 1009

West Avenue D. In November 2008, Helping Hands moved to its current location at 2210 Holland Road.

Today, Helping Hands continues to be supported by the Belton Ministers' Fellowship and 29 local churches of many denominations. Each month, Helping Hands provides support to over 3,000 of our neighbors through the weekly

commitment of more than 85 volunteers and staff. During the time of covid-19 virus, volunteers have continued to help families by delivering groceries to their homes.

--Donna Jensen

Helping Hands of Georgetown In 2015 Bob Weimar started in his kitchen making 12 sandwiches that he handed out at the Georgetown

Library parking lot this turned into Helping Hands of Georgetown.

Today Helping Hands of Georgetown, with the help of many volunteers, provides a sack lunch Monday through Thursday for the underserved, working poor and homeless in our community. On Sunday evenings a meal

is also served at the library parking lot. During the week 90 bags of lunches are provided by volunteers. The lunches consist of a sandwich, a salty item, a sweet item, fruit and string cheese. They are also working toward buying land and building tiny homes for the homeless.

They are pray all of the time and in every circumstance, pray with family and private meditation. We sang “Ask Me What Great Things I Know”. CTC UMW Annual Autumn Gathering with District Leadership Development

October 3, 2020 Corsicana UMC, 320 N. 15th St., Corsicana, TX 75110

"What does the Lord require of you?"

Our Autumn Gathering will focus on how one mission has answered this call. Donna Burney of "Light in the Gap Mission" will share the story of seeing women in need and stepping up to the challenge. "Light in the Gap Mission" is a faith based mission in Waco to women getting out of prison at the time of their release so that their immediate needs are met and they are helped on a productive path to a new life in society. There will be opportunities to share in the mission and support "Light in the Gap." We can help prevent women newly released from prison from falling into the hands of traffickers.

We will also be electing a new President of Central Texas Conference United Methodist Women. Come and express your appreciation to Lynne for the wonderful leadership she has given us for 4 years. The District Officers will also be trained, and it is important that the 2021 district officers attend.

The meeting will take place October 3, 2020: 9-9:30 registration; 9:45 Opening. Mark your calendars and encourage your local UMW organization members to attend.

Blessings, Margaret Gessley

JESUS WANTS ME FOR A SUNBEAM

Harriett Jane Olson writes in the foreword of the UMW Prayer Calendar-2020, that “…the children’s Sunday school song “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam” reminds us of two basic Christian affirmations: First, that God is light, the source of all truth, goodness and love; and secondly, that followers of Jesus are expected to convey and be the light of God in the world.” Do you remember this song which was composed by Nellie Talbot with music by Edwin O. Excell? Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, To shine for Him each day; In every way try to please Him, At home, at school, at play.

Refrain: A sunbeam, a sunbeam, Jesus wants me for a sunbeam; A sunbeam, a sunbeam, I’ll be a sunbeam for Him.

Jesus wants me to be loving, And kind to all I see; Showing how pleasant and happy His little one can be.

Refrain

I will ask Jesus to help me To keep my heart from sin, Ever reflecting His goodness, And always shine for Him.

Refrain

I’ll be a sunbeam for Jesus; I can if I but try; Serving Him moment by moment, Then live with Him on high.

Refrain

I have never heard it, but what a sweet song to live by. --Sharon Gibson
