The next baseline technology Transistor (early mainframes, rotary dial

telecommunications) SSI/MSI TTL (mainframes, minicomputers,

electronic telephony switches) CMOS (microprocessors, fiberoptics

communications, the Internet) Next: Wireless Hive Networks, Intelligent

units at pennies per device

Upcoming technology-Printed electronics

Cost per mm2 of processed silicon $.5-$2.0 Cost per 100 mm2 of Printed Electronics

$.1 - $.01 1000/1 to 10,000 cost/mm2 differential Prototype cost silicon - $250,000 Prototype cost Printed Electronics - $100 to

$10,000

Fully integrated systems

Printed Electronics enables full integration including parts that do not benefits from feature shrinkage including;

Antenna Display Battery Solar collector Human tactile interface Etc.

Page 125: CENTRAL TEXAS SECTION OF THE IEEE Year 2008 Spring Planning Meeting January 26, 2008 San Marcos Garrett Polhamus, Chair

IEEE Central Texas Section

Leading first applications

OLED display Item tagging RFID ($.01-$.03 per tag) Solar cells Batteries

But those are only the ground breakers – as was the “Sony radio” to transistor technology

Page 126: CENTRAL TEXAS SECTION OF THE IEEE Year 2008 Spring Planning Meeting January 26, 2008 San Marcos Garrett Polhamus, Chair

IEEE Central Texas Section

Leading process

Organic Semiconductors (conductive polymers)

Amorphous silicon (including crystalline silicon, etc.)

Carbon nanotubes Printed electronics will probably emerge

as the combination of all three.

Page 127: CENTRAL TEXAS SECTION OF THE IEEE Year 2008 Spring Planning Meeting January 26, 2008 San Marcos Garrett Polhamus, Chair

IEEE Central Texas Section

Present direction in device (silicon) technology

Each generation the cost of a square mm of processed silicon increases (by about 50%)

Each generation the logic capacity on a square mm increases by a factor of 2-8

The size of the smallest part is fixed (about 1.0 mm on the side)

As long as you strive for increased functionality at a fixed or growing price –that’s nice

However, if just low cost is the objective, you are left behind

Page 128: CENTRAL TEXAS SECTION OF THE IEEE Year 2008 Spring Planning Meeting January 26, 2008 San Marcos Garrett Polhamus, Chair

IEEE Central Texas Section

Silicon stays in “Moor’s Law bubble”

Moor’s law bubble – Silicon based devices in the 25mm2 to 225mm2

Printed electronics enables the area below the bubble, like 1 cent RFID

Printed electronics also enables vast “massively parallel” information technology innovations

Both directions are “Hive Systems”

Questioning Technology

Why have we seen play stations at the $200 - $500 for a long time but a “$100 laptop for each student” is such a monumental task??

Why can’t we have laptop-textbook combo for $10 (plus cost of educational content) ??

Page 130: CENTRAL TEXAS SECTION OF THE IEEE Year 2008 Spring Planning Meeting January 26, 2008 San Marcos Garrett Polhamus, Chair

Fields of Dreams

RFID tagged retail items Wireless Sensor Networks Pixy-dust, smart dust Perimeter monitoring Biomedical automated lab. Tests The list is long…

What is needed is the technology for pennies per device

Dream to Reality

Printed electronics - a technology for fixed function, relatively large feature (8 micron will do) pennies-cost devices

The volume is about 1000 times higher than the volume of present electronic devices

The technology will dominate electronic device manufacturing

Computer Society of San Antonio Dr. Phillip Youngblood of the University of Incarnate

Word has expressed interest in establishing a student chapter at UIW

He is reviewing interest amoung his fellow faculty members and his students.

If warranted by interest we (Gary Rogers, Joe Redfield, and Steve Crowl) will help put on an organizing meeting to help them get started.

They need a petition signed by at least 2 faculity members and 20 student members.

The computer society will add UIW as a meeting site.

Rackspace Managed Hosting

Our annual meetings at Rackspace have been very well attended.

They have very generously sponsored dinner at these meetings.

Rackspace is working to encourage employees to participate in professional activities such as the IEEE.

We (Joe Redfield) tried to support their Career Day event but unfortunately it was canceled.

Other approaches to them may be a good source of additional members for the IEEE.

Issues

Variable meeting place is both a blessing and a curse. Downside - potential attendees may hesitate because they are unsure of location. Upside - we visit and see great locations and have a chance to draw from that geographical area and from the local student body.

For now we will continue this practice and even add UIW as a new site.

Page 153: CENTRAL TEXAS SECTION OF THE IEEE Year 2008 Spring Planning Meeting January 26, 2008 San Marcos Garrett Polhamus, Chair

Issues

Meetings in early December seem to always be a problem - low attendance, difficulty getting speakers.

In the future we will avoid the December date and meet in November the week before the Thanksgiving break instead.

Computer Society T-Shirts

As extensively discussed in the past we plan to obtain a supply of IEEE Computer Society T-Shirts.

The first use of these T-Shirts will be used as thank-you gifts to the student speakers at the annual student night in April.

Ongoing Issues Low Education Society membership at both CTS

and IEEE levels. Society may become a “council” supported by other societies.

“Education” still perceived as traditional domain of academia rather than a path to Life Long Learning and career development

Failure to convince engineers (and their management) that “teaching” is a fundamental part of their job.

Society & Chapter update: EDS has been loosing members in the past few years. Recently, there are many activities to increase membership. Our chapter is getting more active with monthly meeting and ~30% increased attendance.

Members on SAM-IEEE – 150 Non members on EDC email list – 57 Average attendance at meetings – 15-17 Any issues restricting future success – presence

of semiconductor companies in Austin. Focus on emerging technology in addition to ‘traditional semiconductor topic’.

Formerly, Formerly

In December 2007, the CTS Engineering Management Society (EMS) Chapter divided into the Austin EMS and San Antonio EMS Chapters

On January 1, 2008, the IEEE Engineering Management Society became the IEEE Technology Management Council (TMC)

The Austin and San Antonio EMS Chapters became the Austin and San Antonio TMC Chapters

Mission:

The IEEE Technology Management Council provides information and services to IEEE members and the worldwide audience of practitioners and researchers engaged in the profession of engineering, technology, and innovation management.

Key Points about the TMC

IEEE Technical Councils do not have individual members as Societies do.

TMC is currently supported by 14 Societies, including:

Computer Circuits and Systems/Solid State Circuits Communications/Signal Processing Electron Devices Laser and Electro-Optics Systems, Man and Cybernetics

All members of council member societies, in the section, are now Chapter members.

Issues (if any)

Have had one meeting with 33% student attendees. (Lost $17.84)

Our policy has been to not charge students an admission fee.

Don’t see this as a problem since it’s rare that the student attendance is high.

We recognize that students need this exposure to our professional organizations and are happy to provide this service at no charge.

Started Year with $7.00 in Kitty ended with $232.32
