“Plug and Play, or Plug and Pay?  Lessons Learned and Design Considerations

for the Installation of Direct Drive Turbo Blowers”

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. Joe C. Thompson Center, University of Texas, Austin

In  September 2010,  the City of Bryan  (COB) bid  a project  to  replace existing multistage blowers with high‐efficiency direct drive, air bearing  turbo blowers at  two of  their wastewater  treatment plants  (WWTPs). The low bid was selected based on a combination of capital cost and guaranteed 5‐year electrical cost. The blowers were put  into operation  in  July 2011. Before  the  construction  contract  could be  closed out,  the City began experiencing  issues with  the blowers  at both  sites,  including  a  failure of  a blower  core. Many of  the  issues experienced at the City of Bryan are not unique to Texas or to a certain manufacturer and have occurred at other  plants  across  the  country  using  turbo  blowers.  Despite  the  mechanical  performance  issues,  the installation of the turbo blowers has provided the City with needed additional aeration capacity, while reducing power consumption by between 20% and 30%.

This presentation will discuss the types of turbo blowers in the market (air bearing, magnetic bearing, integrally geared)  and present design  considerations  for  Engineers  and Owners  to  implement on  future projects. The presentation will also cover lessons learned from the City of Bryan project and other projects across the nation. Lastly, the true energy savings that that has been observed and the estimated payback period for the City of Bryan will be presented.

Danny Hurtado, P.E. works out of CDM Smith’s Austin office and has been with the company for 8 years.  Prior to consulting, Mr. Hurtado served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Panama.  He has a B.S. from the University of Florida and a M.S. from Michigan Tech, both in environmental engineering.

Mark Jurica  is the Treatment & Compliance Manager  for the City of Bryan and has been with the City  for 10 years.  He has a B.S. from Texas A&M University in Bioenvironmental Science.

Texas Watereuse Association, Water Environment Association of Texas, and Texas American Water Works Assocation invite you to attend the 3rd Annual Water Reuse in Texas conference at the Austin Convention Center on Friday, July 12.

The  program  will  provide  attendees  current  updates  on  reclaimed  water  topics including  UTILITY  OPERATIONS,  WATER  REUSE  PLANNING,  POTABLE  REUSE,  and MICROCONSTITUENTS  along  with  the  opportunity  to  network  with  industry professionals interested in extending our water resources into the future.  Lunch will be  included  and  the  schedule  has  been  developed  to  offer maximum  instruction time in a one‐day conference.  Registration is available online at http://weat.org/.

Texas Water 2013  in Galveston, TX was the 18th Texas Water conference and by all accounts, an overwhelming success.   Despite  the  rain and unlikely  island weather, our  attendees  perused  the  exhibits  and  attended  technical  sessions  in  record breaking  numbers.    Our  overall  attendance,  including  exhibitors,  was  a  bit  over 3,000  people.    Many  of  our  technical  sessions  were  standing  room  only  –  a testament  to  our members’  and  industry’s  emphasis  on  knowledge  and  technical innovation.

The week kicked off with the inaugural YP environmental event.  Close to twenty WEAT and TAWWA members worked with the Galveston Bay Foundation to develop an oyster bar, which will help provide hard substrate for oyster “spat” to colonize and eventually transform the bar to a  leaving reef.   A number of our attendees also competed in the Annual Golf Tournament that brought in over $18,000 for the WEAT and TAWWA scholarship funds.  The Water for People Silent Auction is an institution at Texas Water.  This year, and thanks to everyone who bid, bought a raffle ticket, or gave in to Betty Jordan’s persistent calls to donate, we raised nearly $14,000 for Water for People!

Cordell Samuels,  the current WEF President addressed  the group  in  the opening  session.   His  remarks were spot on  for  the  conference.   Mr. Samuels encouraged everyone  to  continue  “critically  important work” and emphasized “energy recovery  from water resource recovery  facilities.”   Kate Galbraith, our keynote speaker, also provided some thoughtful notions from the perspective of a journalist on why “water is a challenging issue to communicate” and how to address these difficulties.
