President’s Message ~ Joanne Rogoff “The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the

commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.”

I am both proud and honored to be the president of Central Coast Funds for

Children, an organization of women whose commitment to volunteering

their time, energy, and talents cannot be measured. Being a group of 35,

the tasks are numerous, the dedication resolute, and the efforts tenacious.

We may be small, but we are mighty!

Speaking of small, there are several openings for new members to join our

organization. See page 2 for additional details if you are interested in be-

coming a member. 2017 will hopefully bring some new events to CCFC. We

are currently gathering information on different and entertaining fundrais-

ers … so stayed tuned!

Would you like to become a member of CCC? We currently have several openings for new members. Our primary objective is to raise funds to donate in the form of grants to local organiza-tions that support children in need. Funds are raised through donations (private and business), membership dues, special fundraising events, and on-going community projects. As members of CCFC, we also participate in several community events that provide fun and enriching experiences for children. Read on and you will see more about our fund-raising efforts and participation in these events.

We currently have 30 members, 28 active members and two provisional members. In addition, CCFC is proud to have 33 dedicated trustees. These ladies have served as an active member for 10 or more years. We meet the first Wednesday of every month at a member’s house and the meeting is followed with lunch. We love to socialize in addition to supporting chil-dren!

If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact Joanne Rogoff, President at: [email protected] or 805-448-9649 Or Muriel Harkins, Vice-President at: 805-801-5259 [email protected]

Vice-President’s Message ~ Muriel Harkins

The beginning of 2017 we were

sad to say goodbye to 2 wonder-

ful members. Jeanette Meek, one

of our pillars, transitioned to

trustee and Gillian Sinclair, re-

gretfully, due to other commit-

ments. We will miss both of them

tremendously. Marsha Braun,

who had taken a 6 month leave

of absence, has returned to ac-

tive membership. We have 2

members, Kim Conti and Audrey

Alfano, who have requested

leave of absences due to busy

work schedules. That said, we

have 28 active members and

have openings for 5 member-

ships. Now, more than ever, the

children of our county need extra

help. We are committed, howev-

er many of us there are, to help

those children in need. The many

organizations to which we grant

money are essential to the health

and welfare of so many of our

children.

Making Spirits Bright

The twinkling lights at the Madonna Inn were not the only things bright at CCFC’s annual winter event!

The theme this year was “Making Spirits Bright” and CCFC members, supporters and guests were wel-

comed with stunning and unique holiday centerpieces created by CCFC members and raffled off. Local

businesses, CCFC members, and supporters generously donated a variety of items for our silent auc-

tion. Renowned motivational speaker and author of Happy People Win, Jean Steele, captivated the

audience with her lively and humorous talk on how to keep yourself and the workplace emotionally

well. A HUGE thank you to the members of CCFC for their dedication, time, and energy in helping with

the myriad of tasks required to make Making Spirits Bright so successful. And a heartfelt thank you to

the guests and supporters who attended the event. It is with the enduring support of all of you that

we can continue to assist the children of San Luis Obispo County.

On Sept 9 2016, our annual CCFC fall event “Garden of Giving,” at the Victorian Estate, gave tribute to our local first responders, thanking

them for their service. Honored attendees included:

Five Cities Fire Authority: Chief Steve Lieberman Cal Fire of SLO County: Unit Chief Scott Jalbert and (retired) Chief Rob Lewin San Luis Ambulance, Paramedics & Critical Care Transport: Kris Strommem and several crew members SLO’s Sheriff’s Deptartment: Commander Stewart MacDonald SLO County Office of Emergency Services: Rachel Monte

On Sept 9, 2001, hundreds of first responders went into the World Trade Center of NewYork City, risking and losing their lives for perfect strangers. Today, our local first responders serve the public every day risking their lives to protect each one of us. We at CCFC wanted to thank our first responders and let them know that we appreciate their bravery, service and dedication. We had speakers from the various branches of first responders represented.

Jerry Boots (Retired Marine Corps) played Taps, which was very inspirational, followed by a moment of silence. Mike Miller provided music on guitar. He played several selections of patriotic songs along with a variety of well-known hits.

Once again, the Kiwanis Club de Tolosa of San Luis Obispo donated their time to provide a wonderful and delicious Santa Maria style BBQ with all the trimmings. The hours they put into providing the meal for the event was greatly appreciated by the members of CCFC and attendees.

Thank you again for all CCFC members, above participants and attendees for making “Garden of Giving” such a success. In turn, CCFC will be able to help many organizations that serve SLO County’s children by awarding grants.

Our members continue to meet to create fun-filled sacks for the emer-gency foster care children as they are placed into the system. A group of our members spend several hours once a month sewing decorative bags and stuffing them with a blanket, coloring book, stuffed animal, journal, crayons, pencils, toothbrush and a hair brush. For some of the older children, we include hand lotion, deo-dorant, shampoo and hard candy. We distribute these bags to The Fami-ly Care Network, Women’s Shelter and The South County Youth Coali-tion.

In 2015, we delivered 172 Sunshine Sacks. In October, CCFC made 60 sacks for Family Care Network’s Hous-ing Support Program. This is a pro-gram that helps homeless families find a place to live and help them get back on their feet. Our sacks provid-ed special items for these children and brought many smiles.

We are also grateful to the Church of the Nazarene located on Johnson Avenue for making available a place to meet and make our sacks.

Garden of Giving 2016

On December 10, 2016, Central Coast Funds for Children held its annual paja-ma drive at the Woodland Plaza in Paso Robles. KJUG broadcasted live from the parking lot in front of Golden 1 Credit Union and JC Penny’s. Central Coast Funds for Children was privileged to be able to help coordinate the event to collect pajamas for the children. The DJ’s drew listeners and sup-porters from all over the county and kept them advised of the needs and any special sizes. In the end, Central Coast Funds for Children delivered over 800 pairs of pajamas to the Women’s Shelter, ALPHA, RISE, Family Resource Cen-ter, Family Care Network, Child Resource Center, Friends of Martha’s Place, CAPSLO, Public Health Department, North County Connection Recovery Re-source Center, Transitions Mental Health, ACTS, South County Youth Coalition and Womenade. Christmas was surely brighter and warmer for the children who benefited from the generosity of our community. Thank you to all who donated pajamas and a BIG thank you to KJUG and Golden 1 Credit Union for once again partnering with Central Coast Funds for Children.

Central Coast Funds for Children is so blessed to have received $5,000 from the Vetter-Winters Ad-ministrative Estate, Glen Lewis executor, for holi-day gifts. The stipulation for this donation is that it be used for children’s holiday gifts within San Luis Obispo County. We distributed the money to vari-ous organizations this year:

$1,100 purchased two iPads that were giv-en to the United Cerebral Palsy Association for children diagnosed with autism. Re-search proves that autistic children learn better when they can use an iPad or com-puter.

$400 was given to Family Care Network, Inc. to help with their holiday shopping needs.

$400 supplemented the PJs collected and distributed through CCFC in collaboration with KJUG radio project” DJ’s for PJs”.

$1,600 was used to purchase gift cards from Target which were given as $400 gift cards to The Women’s Shelter, Transitions-Mental Health, Prado Day Center and Max-ine Lewis Homeless Shelter.

$1,500 purchased jackets from Old Navy. The 112 jackets were distributed to 5 different agencies in San Luis Obispo County.

It is donations like the Vetter-Winter Administra-tion Estate and the kindness of Glen Lewis that we are able to bring smiles to hundreds of children in our county during the holiday season.

Honoring Jeanette Meek

Jeanette at the Gift Box in

French Hospital, 1994.

After 30 years of sewing Sunshine Sacks, making kites, stringing fruit loops,

creating centerpieces, preparing and serving soup, and much, much more,

Jeanette Meek is now a trustee of CCFC. At the December general

meeting, Jeanette was honored with a video highlighting her 30 years of

service. Over the course of those 30 years, Jeanette was the president

of the Children’s Home Society before the organization became CCFC. One member named her

the “Queen of Presidency” as she has been president of CCFC three times! In addition to being a

leader, other members described Jeanette as being a team player, a great mentor and role model,

one who could never say no. She has been very supportive for all of CCFC’s fundraising activities as

well as participating in various community events. She has been there to help with everything!

Jeanette has set high standards for our organization and we appreciate all her contributions.

Thank you, Jeanette!
