1. CENTRE EMILE BERNHEIM IN 2016

The Centre Emile Bernheim (CEB) is the Université libre de Bruxelles’s research institute in Management Science, affiliated to the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (SBS-EM). CEB’s creation was encouraged by Emile Bernheim, a Belgian industrialist and philanthropist. CEB is supported by the Fondation Emile Bernheim, the second largest Belgian Foundation. CEB develops and promotes advanced scientific research in management. It hosts full-time and part-time professors, as well as researchers. In line with Emile Bernheim’s aim to support youth, CEB also trains PhD students and young researchers. CEB's members are currently active in the following fields: Finance, Accounting & Tax Sciences - International Trade & Development - Strategy, Corporate Governance, Marketing & Innovation - Economic & Financial History - Human Resources, Organisation & Labor Economics - Microfinance (CERMi) - Public Management - Centre d'Etudes Economiques et Sociales de l'Environnement (CEESE). In his will, Emile Bernheim stressed the importance of interdisciplinary research. His message has been translated in CEB’s structure, as some of CEB’s departments were conceived around a theme rather than a discipline. CEB’s members publish in top scientific journals and participate in conferences and academic teaching worldwide. CEB senior researchers have developed close relations with public and private firms, and national and international organisations (European Union, World Bank, federal and regional Belgian governments, European Patent Office, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). These relations frequently lead to contracts that fund applied research work and expertise. CEB also runs the Doctoral School in Management Science of SBS-EM. CEB PhD students benefit from highly competitive grants such as FNRS (Fond National de la Recherche Scientifique), FRESH (Fonds pour la Recherche en Sciences Humaines), PAI (Pôle d’Attraction Interuniversitaire), Doctiris. CEB is chaired by Professor Kim Oosterlinck, and directed by Professor Pierre-Guillaume Méon. The administrative staff, led by Mrs. Aurélie Rousseaux, is composed of Mrs. Véronique Lahaye, Mrs. Anne-Lise Remy, and Mrs. Annie Siot (part-time since September 2016). The CEB Research Seminars in Applied Economics and Management is supervised by Professors Pierre-Guillaume Méon and Sandra Rothenberger. The monthly Brown Bag Seminar welcomes senior and junior researchers who present their work in progress. CEB organizes the "Management Café" that applies to management the concept of "cafés philo". The idea is to debate in a friendly and relaxed "café" atmosphere on topics relevant to anyone with an interest in business and organizations. CEB organizes doctoral courses and hosts visiting professors who actively participate in research and teaching activities, such as the European Master in Microfinance, and the Doctoral Programme. Specific information on ongoing activities, Working Papers, the statutes of the CEB and contact members can be found at http://www.solvay.edu/centre-emile-bernheim.

In 2016, CEB welcomed new members: • Several Researchers joined CEB’s Departments: Marie Godts and Rafael Pérez

Cortines joined the Department of Strategy, Corporate Governance, Marketing & Innovation, Malory Rennoir and Octave De Brouwer the Department of Human Resources, Organisation & Labor Economics, and Beni Kouevi-Gath the Department of International Trade and Development.

• CERMi welcomed four new members in 2016: Pascal Glémain, Associate Professor, Laure Radermecker, Researcher, Claudia Savarese, Researcher (PAI fellowship) and Zineb Aouni, Post-doctoral Researcher (PAI fellowship).

This report first presents CEB’s structure, then lists the seminars, conferences, courses, and PhD theses in which its members participated. Last, the report surveys the publications of CEB members by type and their other scientific accomplishments, such as involvement in conference organisation, talk, expert mission, membership in networks and scientific committees, and corporate trainings. We hope you will enjoy reading this report.
