5. PROGRAMS ORGANIZED: a. The third annual Intensive Summer Workshop on Ethics and Research

(I-SWEAR) was conducted from 26th to 30th May 2014 with 33participants from within the University and outside. Nine CME credits wereaccorded to this workshop by KMC. It included 22 sessions covering all theethical issues that could possibly arise when doing research on humansubjects.

b. Guest lecture by Public Health Ethicist Dr. Bebe Loff, from Michel Kirby,Centre for Public Health, Monash on 17th December 2014 titled “Mitigatingpatients dissatisfaction - the Australian perspective”.

c. Guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Leo Pessini, Vice Rector, University of SanCamillo, Sao Paolo, Brazil on 20th April 2014 on the topic “Bioethics inLatin America and Clinical Bioethics”.

7. ACCOLADES: 1. Dr.Vina Vaswani: Nomination to the Editorial Board of International Journal

of Ethics Education(http://www.springer.com/social+sciences/applied+ethics/journal/40889) bySpringer Publishers. This Journal is the official journal of the InternationalAssociation for Education in Ethics (IAEE) that will have its next internationalconference in Brazil in 2015.

8. COLLABORATION

a. International Collaboration: An MOU has been signed between YenepoyaUniversity, India and Universidad Panamericana, Mexico City, Mexico on15th January 2015. The memorandum includes special short term academic

programs, and student exchanges, curriculum development, exchange offaculty members and students, exchange of academic materials and otherinformation, and collaboration on research grants.

b. International Student Exchange: As a part of the student exchangeprogram, in the fourth year running three students from Johannes GuttenbergUniversity Germany visited Yenepoya University from 4th March 2015 to 3rd April 2015 and observed clinical work in the departments of Medicine,OBG, General Surgery/Anesthesia & Pediatrics.

9. STUDENT ACTIVITIES a. Inter-Collegiate Ethics Skit Competition: The students of the

Undergraduate courses in Biomedical Ethics and Environmental ethicsparticipated and bagged the first prize at the Inter-Collegiate Ethics SkitCompetition on “Ethical Issues in Health care” at Fr. Muller MedicalCollege Mangalore on 22nd September 2014. The theme of the skit was“My body…their decision”. Nine colleges from in and aroundMangalore participated. The skit highlights the paternalistic model of thedoctor-patient relationship in the present day scenario. The concept andscript were designed by Mr. Sajjad Salman.

b. International Students Day celebration “Shikshit Bharat, SakshamBharat”in Yenepoya University, a UGC initiative for quality educationon 17th November 2014: Essay and speech competitions, forumdiscussions and focus group discussion were conducted. Topics coveredwere enhancing quality of education, improving the teaching methodology,strengthening infrastructure, more power to girl children to decide theirfuture and more options to seek careers and improving access to educationand making free education compulsory up to 18 years, reflective learningstrategies, teachers training and certification and teaching through rolemodeling.

c. Students’ participation in Ethics day: Ethics day was celebrated on 20thApril 2015. Prof. Dr. Leo Pessini, Vice Rector, University of San Camillo,

Sao Paolo, Brazil and Fr. Baby Ellickal, Vicar Provincial Superior, of theMinistry of the Infirm (MI) were the guests.

i. He distributed certificates to the successful students of the CertificateCourse in Clinical Ethics Consultation, Internship Module Ethics andHumanities for Physiotherapy students and Choice-based CreditCourses in Bioethics/Medical Ethics and Environmental Ethics.

ii. Certificates of participation and a mug with the logo of Centrefor Ethics and Yenepoya University were distributed to students whotook part in the activities in the run-up.

iii. Certificates were awarded to 15 students of YenepoyaPhysiotherapy College who completed their Ethics Internship program.

10. ALUMNI ACTIVITIES:

Two Alumni update meetings were held.

a. Dr. Bebe Loff on ethical issues such as autonomy, informed consent andjustice. She was questioning the wisdom of applying ethical principles fromwest applied in Indian context.

b. Interactive meeting with Prof. Dr. Leo Pessini, Vice Rector, University ofSan Camillo, Sao Paolo, Brazil and Fr. Baby Ellickal, Vicar ProvincialSuperior, of the Ministry of the Infirm (MI). Bioethics in Latin America, thechanging scenarios in ethics and prominence of clinical ethics wasdiscussed.

He said he was moved by the sincere appreciation of Alumni as to whatbioethics program has done to them.
