Robert A. Birman, Executive Director
I INVITE YOU to join the Centrum community in the creation of art and the honoring of diverse cultures and traditions.
DISCOVER creative workshops, mainstage performances, nightclub events, free literary readings, lectures, dances, artist residencies, youth programs, and more.
OUR PROGRAMS welcome participants from across the globe to historic Fort Worden State Park. Last year alone, Centrum served participants from 17 countries, all 50 states, and 77% of the counties in Washington State. And 30 percent of program participants are age 18 or younger!
As always, we welcome youth age 18 and younger to all performances for free, with an advance reservation. Free offerings at Centrum for everyone include our outdoor Free Fridays at the Fort series, all readings at the Writers’ Conference, and most workshop participant concerts throughout the summer.
AGAIN THIS SUMMER our Blues and Jazz in the Clubs concerts will occur in venues throughout Fort Worden. We encourage club-goers to enjoy a meal and shopping in downtown Port Townsend before heading to the Fort.
THE CENTRUM COMMUNITY is grateful for support from Washington State Arts Commission, Washington State Parks Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, City of Port Townsend, Jefferson County, and the Fort Worden PDA. On behalf of the Centrum staff and board, I extend our thanks to all of our donors and sponsors who support our mission and Centrum’s unique role in the Puget Sound community.
See you at Centrum!
Fostering creative experiences that change lives.

Those musicians are masters of clarinet, saxophone, accordion, guitar, keyboard, and percussion. They perform in a Saturday concert that sells out every year, so reserve your seats early!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Centrum’s world-class faculty will bring you the most authentic
Choro experience you can fi nd without a passport.
Faculty member Daniela Spielmann of Rio de Janeiro says, “I try to
express the love I feel for life and for people through my playing. The vibrant
rhythms, harmonies and melodic structures of this music can be heard
in pubs, street festivals and our jam sessions called ‘Roda de Choro.’ It’s the
expression of our popular culture. I want the whole world to hear it.”
All faculty/performers are natives of Brazil, bringing with them all
the atmosphere and nuances of a neighborhood Roda in Rio.

Students take creative risks in a weeklong overnight program designed to foster creativity and critical thinking. Passionate artists teach visual art, music, acting, printmaking and dance every day in an intensive week of learning through the arts. The week concludes with a student showcase for friends and family to witness all that students discovered in their creative explorations. ARTIST RESIDENCIES
ARTISTNow entering its sixth year, the
Emerging Artist Residency supports artists in the Northwest region who
are at pivotal and early stages of their professional careers. The month-long
residency allows artists to focus on new or ongoing work and provides
opportunities for mentorship and community building. Artists receive stipends, housing, studio space, and access to the historic and ecological
wonders of Fort Worden. Candidates are nominated by a group of cultural
producers from across the Northwest and finalists are selected by a panel of jurors. At the closing of the residency,
artists invite the public into their studios to share their ideas and processes.
Through the gift of time, space, and community, artists have a rare
occasion to focus on ideas, expand their networks, and build relationships that
continue beyond the residency.
In celebration of the past five years of the Emerging Artist Residency program, Centrum and Northwind Arts Center in
Port Townsend are partnering to present an exhibition of select alumni residents,
which will run from October 4–28, 2019 at Northwind Arts Center.

Creative professionals from all disciplines and backgrounds can take advantage of charming cabins, studio spaces, and a rich array of resources including Corvidae Press and Rainshadow recording studio. These self-directed residencies allow both individuals and collectives to customize experiences that range from creative solitary pursuits to collaborative productions.

Centrum is proud to announce the creation of the Northwest Heritage
Residencies, made possible through a National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” grant. This program will be presented by Centrum in partnership with Fort Worden Public Development Authority to support the exploration of place through arts and culture. Between 2019 and 2020, the Northwest Heritage Residencies will welcome six juried artists—or “makers”—to develop new work in visual art, music, writing, crafts, history, or ecology, with motifs aligning the arts with nature, Native American history, resilience, or history. Residencies will vary in length, with accommodations and facilities provided at the Fort Worden campus. In addition to dedicated time for their work, each resident artist/maker will present public lectures, demonstrations, workshops or performances.
A search for candidates will launch in Spring 2019, and selected artists will be announced Summer 2019.

In the words of famed storyteller Donna Washington, “Storytelling is about creating community. It can be funny, absurd, deadly serious, exaggerated, or understated, but it is always about bringing us out of whatever reality we call home into a shared place where we go through an experience together. Storytelling is a comment on the life we humans live, and it asks us to fi nd ourselves and those around us in the words. Only when we understand how similar we are will we be able to break down the barriers that separate us and cause so much dissent. To know my story is to see yourself.”
Participants will live those words in this second annual storytelling workshop at Centrum, led by two professional storytellers.
Workshop space is available. Limited to 24 people.

NORTHWEST HERITAGE
Your Alternative Writing Program was initially launched as a reaction to the branding, marketing, and career networking of AWP. We desired to create, instead, a residency where we could write in community and focus deeply on our work while being inspired by optional morning freewrites to get the juices fl owing.
YAWP is the perfect space for writers, with a blend of writing time and community time. At each YAWP, we make breakthroughs in our work and connect with one another as writers—in the beautiful setting of Fort Worden.
Space is available. Limited to 20 people.

Red Hot Strings is a celebration of the “Jazz Age” string players—a long line of musicians steeped in ragtime and blues and unleashed in the popular music of the 1920s and ’30s. This primarily means Hot Jazz and 1930s Swing, and naturally the string-reliant sub-genres of Western Swing, Hawaiian Swing and even the jazzier jugbands of the American South. From Ragtime to Blues, to Classical and Creole, many musical traditions had a hand in the development of the harmonically and rhythmically compelling improvising vocabulary of Jazz, and stringed instrument players were in the mix from its inception.
