Ceramic Tile Overview ‘‘ Ceramic tile is a natural product made up of clay, a number of other naturally-occurring minerals and water. Ceramic tile comes in both glazed and unglazed tiles. Glazed ceramic tile has a ceramic coating applied to the tile body which gives the tile its color and finish. Ceramic tile is a popular choice for your interior floors and walls and offers unlimited decorating possibilities. “

STRUCTURE Ceramics usually have a combination of stronger bonds called ionic (occurs between a metal and nonmetal ); and covalent (occurs between two nonmetals and involves sharing of atoms).

CsCI is ionically bonded with radius= 0.94 and CN= 8.

eight chloride ion surround a central cation at the (½,½,½) position

The Advantages of Ceramic Tiles Ceramic tile is a beautiful, tough and enduring floor and wall covering material. Apart from its very presentable look, it is resistant to almost all of the common sources of wear endured by quality flooring.

Here is a quick list of the many advantages of ceramic tiles:

DURABILITY Ceramic surfaces have a relatively longer life if compared to most of the other materials used for floor and wall covering.

FIRERESISTANCE Ceramic tiles are fireproof. They do not burn, nor give off smoke or toxic fumes.

Page 10: Ceramic Tile

MOISTURE RESISTANCE They are an excellent choice for use in wet areas, if properly installed and grouted. Some of the types (porcelain) are also impervious, i.e. they have a less than 0.5% moisture absorption rate.

RESISTANCE TO ABRASION AND TREAD WEAR They are easily used as floor tiles at busy commercial locations and residential sites. Ceramic tiles can withstand heavy foot traffic due to their resistance to abrasion and tread wear.

SLIP RESISTANCE Ceramic tiles are treated to prevent slipping either by adding an abrasive grit to the glaze or texture to the surface such as ribs, studs or orange peel finish. This anti-slip factor is also particularly defined and rated in tile flooring.

Thermal shock resistance A properly laid ceramic tile floor will neither deform nor break in extremetemperature conditions.

Chemical resistanceCeramic tile materials are highly resistant to chemical agents.

Color permanence Direct exposure of ceramic tiles to sunlight neither alters their color, nor causes them to fade.

Hygiene Being hygienic and easy to clean, ceramic tiles are recommended for all areas where high sanitary standards are a must.

Limitation Fragility

One of the first limitation of ceramic braces is that they are fragile. Ceramic is a naturally brittle material, so the braces will be more fragile than those made with metal. Ceramic braces will easily chip or break if you're not careful. When they break, the sharp edges may even cut your lip.

Teeth

Another limitation of ceramic braces is that they may wear your teeth down. Ceramic is harder than the enamel on your teeth. If the brackets are put on your lower teeth, your upper teeth will be worn down because because they are in constant contact with the ceramic brackets.

Removal Removal is also limitation of ceramic braces. They are known for being very difficult to remove. In some cases, removal can be painful to the patient. Ceramic braces may also damage one of your teeth upon removal if they break and leave a piece stuck to one of your teeth.

Stains Ceramic braces are also easily stained. If they become stained, then they will lose their tooth-like color and become more visible to other people. If you have ceramic braces, you will have to pay more attention to the foods you eat and to your oral hygiene.

Correction Time Last limitation of ceramic braces is the length of time it takes for correction. It normally takes a longer time for these braces to correct your teeth than it would for metal braces. This is due to the fact that your teeth will move slower because the ceramic surface experiences more friction between the wire.

Ceramic Tile Applications

APPLICATIONS - BATH FLOORS

Size does make a difference! For many years the general advice from designers was that small bathrooms required the use of small tile! Actually that advice has been made obsolete in the last ten years with the availability of large body tiles. As the tiles increase in size, the amount of grout lines is reduced and the floors are not only then easier to take care of but make the room look bigger as they are less busy

APPLICATIONS – KITCHEN BACKSPLASHES

The backsplash is the focal point of the kitchen and bath and often sets the tone for the rest of the house. The best advice is that you should not install the backsplash, in fact you should not even think about selecting your backsplash tile, until your countertops, cabinets and other decorating plans are set and finished. It is very difficult to carry color, texture, size and design in your mind’s eye while trying to imagine what your countertop and or cabinets will look like after they have been installed! It is so much easier to take the samples and put them in the shadows of your cabinets and allow the reflection of your new countertops to affect the tile color so that you can make the proper selection.

APPLICATIONS – COUNTERTOPS

As with floors, countertops are work surfaces more than they are decorative areas. It makes sense to have areas that get dirty due to constant use to not be the focal point of the room! That focal point is the backsplash, the area of the kitchen that doesn’t get walked upon or worked upon.

APPLICATIONS - BATHROOM WALLS

As with floors, size does make a difference! For many years the general advice from designers was that small bathrooms required the use of small tile! Actually that advice has been made obsolete in the last ten years with the availability of large body tiles.

APPLICATIONS – FIREPLACES

You can pretty much use any tile that you like around fireplaces! When tile is manufactured it is fired at temperatures much higher than you can generate in your fireplace. As a result heat from your fireplace will not affect your tile( it will affect the glue that is used however, so thinset mortar should always be used to set tile around a fireplace that will get warn!)
