colors. However, contrary to the

flags of Serbia and Bulgaria, the

Slovene flag is not derived from

Divje Babe Flute

Prehistory:Present-day Slovenia

was first settled by early humans

more than 250,000 years ago. There

are well-preserved stone tools from

this time, found at the cave at Loza

pri Orehku. A holed bone found at

the subterranean cave of Divje

Babe is 55,000 years old, making it

the oldest flute in the world. It is

kept at the National Museum.

About 7,000 years ago the

Ljubljana Marshes, which were

then a lake, were settled by pile

dwellers. The stilts fixed into the

shallow lake and the houses built

on top of them were a feature of theway of life of that era. The people

used canoes to move among the

stilts. Finds from the pile dwellers

are kept at the National Museum.

The National Museum and other

museums also have numerous

important artefacts from the period

between 1,000 BCE and 300 BCE.

Among the most important

discoveries from the Iron Age and

the Hallstatt era are the Vaka

situla, the royal tombs in Novo

Mesto and the earthworks in theSoa area.

France Preerenwas born into apeasant family on December 3,

1800. He had to leave home quite

early (1808 or 1809) to continue his

education. In 1821, he went to

Vienna where he finished a third

year of philosophy. He entered the

Faculty of Law in 1822, graduated

in 1826, and in 1828 received his

doctoral degree in law. In the

summer of 1828, he returned to

Ljubljana, practicing in law firms,

in the finance office, and at court,and in 1832, he passed his bar exam

in Klagenfurt.

He came into conflict with the

majority opinion in his home

territory regarding the essential

questions of literature. With his

friend, the well versed critic and

theoretician Matija op(1797-1835), he refused to accept the

simplified didactic type of domestic

literature and oriented himself

toward esthetically demanding and

free poetry, arousing indignationand counter-measures in leading

Slovene cultural circles. On his

professional path, he was granted

an independent law office in Kranj

only after his sixth petition in 1846.

A little over two years after moving

to Kranj, he died of cirrhosis of the

liver on February 8, 1849. His

grave is in the old Kranj cemetery

that now bears the name Preernovgaj (Preeren Grove).
