HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 COLD STORAGE PANEL,CERTIF IED FIRE SAFETY.

Sandwich panels with PUR or PIR type insulating cores are currently used very widely in the food and agriculture sector, cold stores and laboratories due to their excellent insulating properties, their high durability, tightness and mechanical properties. The main obstacle to using it has been, traditionally, the fire resistance of the insulating foam used as the panel core.

As a result of an ambitious R&D&i project, HUURRE has developed the PIRM CLASS 1, a new polyisocyanurate insulating foam that has excellent fire resistance and easily overcomes the performance of the PUR and PIR foams.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel by HUURRE has obtained the prestigious international <FM Approved> certificate, based on an extensive and demanding campaign of tests that simulate fully developed fires on a real scale.

The excellent fire resistance of the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel, consequently is endorsed by the multi-national insurance company <FM Global>, who accredit and certify the panel’s fire safety.

Different cases of fires on industrial premises built with the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel, have also shown their excellent fire resistance in a real situation.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel has been specially developed to offer the best fire safety in applications that also require a high degree of insulation: food and agricultural industry, cold stores, laboratories, etc.

2. THE HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 PANEL

THE HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel by HUURRE and detail of the cyclical structure of the PIRM CLASS 1.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is a sandwich panel with a PIRM CLASS 1 insulating core with ≥38 kg/cm3 nominal density, injected between two structural steel platings with a ribbed or smooth surface.

Its excellent fire resistance and high insulating capacity are due to using the PIRM CLASS 1 core, an insulating material based on high index polyisocyanurate and with a cyclical, highly cross-linked structure, developed and sold exclusively by HUURRE.

1

The advantages of the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel.

In contact with a flame, the surface of the PIRM CLASS 1 forms a superficial carbonaceous mesh, an exact copy of the original structure of the foam, which protects the inside of the insulating material and prevents it from catching fire.

This self-protection mechanism means that, when the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is exposed to fire, the flame burns only the surface of the insulating material, protecting the inner core and maintaining the panel’s integrity and insulation.

The burning process of the insulating material, also, stops when the panel is no longer exposed to the fire, therefore not contributing to continuing a possible fire.

PIRM CLASS 1 insulation after being exposed to fire on one of its surfaces. Superficial burning is observed that protects the inner core of the insulating material.

The excellent fire resistance of the PIRM CLASS 1 insulating material is thanks to its cyclical, highly cross-linked structure.

3.2. <FM APPROVED> CERTIFICATE OF THE HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 PANEL, ACCORDING TO THE ANSI STANDARD 4880

The <FM Approved> is endorsed by the knowledge and experience of the team of scientists and technicians of <FM Approvals>, who are specialised in the prevention of risks and responsible for testing and validating the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel.

HUURRE is the only Spanish manufacturer that holds this demanding certification, which provides confidence and safety from one of the world’s leading insurance companies.

To certify the HI-PIRM F panel as CLASS 1, it was necessary to run a wide campaign of fire tests, that are more demanding and have greater scope than the tests necessary, for example, for determining the properties of the EUROCLASS according to the European standard.

This test campaign, conducted in the BRE laboratories (Middlesbrough, United Kingdom) and FM Global (Rhode Island, USA) has shown and accredited the excellent fire reaction of the panel in a much wider range of situations .

<FM GLOBAL> is an insurance company based in USA, with a business turnover of 4.5B $.

It is the insurance company used by one out of every three companies in the FORTUNE 1000 list and, it operates in more than 100 countries.

<FM GLOBAL> has developed a strict tests and audits protocol to assess the characteristics of construction materials against disasters like fires, hurricanes, etc. to therefore be able to reduce the risks derived from using them. Today, the list of <FM Approved> materials is one of the sector’s most prestigious list of references.

About <FM Global>:The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is classified in fire conditions by <FM Global> as CLASS 1, without height limitation and without the need for sprinklers. In other words, <FM Global> certifies and accredits that the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is safe in fire conditions and does not contribute to propagating a possible fire.

Certificate of Compliance

This certificate is issued for the following: HI-PIRM F wall & ceiling panels, HI-PIRM ST and HI-PIRM OD wall panels and HI-PIRM CT ceiling panels

produced with minimum 0.5 mm (0.0197 in.) prefinished zinc coated steel facers and PIR foam cores with a minimum density of 38 kg/m3 (2.4 lb/ft3) produced with a Synthesia Internacional SLU PIR foam system as

HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 COLD STORAGE PANEL,CERTIF IED FIRE SAFETY.

The tests conducted to obtain the <FM Approved> CLASS 1 certificate consisted of a series of small scale tests to determine the fire resistance properties of the PIRM CLASS 1 insulating core and real scale tests on the HI-F panel.

Tests for determining the material insulating properties.

Properties of superficial flame propagation and smoke generation, in the ASTM E84 test tunnel.

Self-ignition and induced ignition temperatures, according to ASTM D1929-96.

Calorific strength, according to ASTM D4809-90.

Determining the thermal response parameter, TRP.

The Room Test UBC 26-3 real scale test.

The test simulates a fire that is extremely powerful and fully developed, with a firepower of 510 KW.

The test lasts 15 minutes, reaching temperatures of up to 1100 ºC.

The seat of the fire is in the corner of a bedroom measuring 2.44 m x 2.44 m, withwalls and ceiling built with HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels that are 200 mm thick.

It is ascertained that there is no fire propagation through the panel, that the burning is only superficial, that the smoke generated does not exceed the maximum established value and that the panel puts itself out immediately after the seat of the fire has been extinguished.

6

Real scale Parallel Test.

The test simulates a fire that is fully developed, with a firepower of 360 KW, and which lasts 15 minutes.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels, measuring 4.9 m high, are arranged at a short distance between them to produce a “chimney effect”.

The aim of the test is to be able to certify the panel’s fire safety without any height limit and without the need for sprinklers.

Parallel Test. The results of this test have meant that the <FM Approved> CLASS 1 certificate can be extended, without height limit or sprinklers.

The Room Test UBC 26-3. A few seconds after the fire starts, the flames are already strongly attacking the wall panels and corner joint.

The Room Test UBC 26-3. After 5 minutes, the first is fully developed, the temperature rises quickly and the flames attack the ceiling.

HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 COLD STORAGE PANEL,CERTIF IED FIRE SAFETY.

Conclusions of the fire campaign run with <FM Approvals>.

The tests conducted have been able to accredit that the quantity of combustible vapours and the heat generated by the panel in the event of a fully developed fire do not contribute to propagating the fire. Therefore, the panel has successfully overcome the requirements contained in the ANSI standard 4880 and it has been classified by <FM Global> as CLASS 1, without height limit and without the need for sprinklers.

Audits and regular tests.

The maintenance of the <FM Approved> certificate is based on conducting in factory sampling, tests controlled by <FM Global> and annual audits. The audit control extends to the suppliers of the certified chemical system for producing the foam and the panel manufacturer throughout the production process, identification and assembly instructions.

7

the PIRM CLASS 1 insulating core only suffers local, superficial burning,

the fire has not managed to advancethrought the insulating core and has not affected the inside of the core or the panel’s rear steel plating,

the panel attachments have remained intact, guaranteeing the integrity of the enclosure.

the fire does not propagate inside the panel, between the metal plating,

the amount of smoke generated has allowed visibility at all times,

no dropping during burning, no “flashover” has occurred (sudden, generalised combustion) and the panel burning process stopped when the seat of the fire was extinguished, maintaining its heat insulation.

After fifteen minutes of the real scale test, subjecting the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel to a powerful and fully developed fire,

State of the insulating core of the panels after the Room Test UBC 26-3. The panels closest to the seat of the fire were burned on the surface, without affecting the inside thereof. The adjacent panels have hardly been damaged.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel, therefore, does not contribute to propagating the fire and puts itself out once the seat of the fire has been extinguished.

3.3. EUROCLASS CLASSIFICATION OF THE HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 PANEL, ACCORDING TO THE EUROPEAN STANDARD 13501

To obtain the EUROCLASS, according to European standard EN 13501, it was necessary to conduct a campaign of fire resistance tests, on a small scale, on the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel:

The “small burner” test, according to standard EN 11925-2, which consists in applying a small flame to the panel’s insulating core.

SBI Test, according to standard EN 13823, which simulates a fire with reduced power (30 KW) in its initial phase.

It is worth mentioning that from August 2015 the standard will not allow carrying out the “small burner” test by applying the flame to the plate, a procedure which is currently admitted but really, in a fire, only classifies the resistance of the panel’s steel plating and not its insulating core. Therefore, the tests conducted by applying the flame to the plating (indicated in the test reports as “with protected edge”) will not be valid.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel accredits its EUROCLASS B-s1,d0 on the basis of the tests conducted and it is certified by the N mark from AENOR.

The tests required by the European standard EN 13501 do not try to simulate a real, fully developed fire and neither do they completely determine the properties of the material, as they can only determine the EUROCLASS of the material based on pre-defined technical criteria.

In order to determined the properties and prove the superior fire resistance of the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel more demanding tests with a wider scope are necessary, such as for example those indicated by <FM

Global> for the <FM Approved> certificate.

EUROCLASS classification tests. The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is classified in fire conditions as EUROCLASS B-s1,d0,(a product that is difficult to burn, with very little smoke development and without any flammable dropping while burning). It is the best possible classification that an organic type material, like PIRM CLASS 1, can obtain.

On the left, conducting the test on a SBI small scale. On the right, it is observed that after the test the HI-PIRM F CLASS panel has only suffered superficial damage.

The old bay ceiling was made with fiber

glass panels, implemented on site.

The cold store, constructed later, was

made entirely from HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 pa-

nels.

The fire severely affected the main bay,

burning ceilings, machinery and other

goods.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels, on the other

hand, withstand the fire without losing their

integrity and the machinery located inside

the cold store was not damaged.

3.4. REAL CASES OF FIRE

Fire on the premises of a meat agri-food company.

The blue box indicates the cold store enclosures, built

with HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels, that withstood the fire

without losing their integrity.

10

The old plant was made with insulating

panels with polyester facings, whereas

the subsequent extension to the bay was

made using HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels.

During the fire, the polyester

panels helped to propagate the fire and

they were completely burned.

On the other hand, the dividing walls

made with HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels not

only protected the goods and equipment

housed in the extension, they also acted as

fire-damping elements, protecting the ad-

jacent bays.

PIRM F CLASS 1 panels, withstood the fire, acted as fire

dampers and protected the adjacent bays.

Out of the various types of insulating material available to date on the market, the sandwich insulating panels with polyurethane core provide the best heat insulation with the smallest panel thickness. The PIRM CLASS 1 insulating material by HUURRE, thanks to its cyclical, cross-linked structure and its high index, has an even higher insulating capacity. For example, the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel measuring 200 mm thick has a heat transmittance (U) of just 0.11 W/m2K.

The heat transmission values of the HI-PIRM F Class 1 panel have been calculated using the conductivity value (lambda), considering the ageing of the foam and the losses through joints between panels, as indicated in European standard EN 14509.

11

4. HEAT INSULATIONThe HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel has exceptional heat insulation, that surpasses the insulating capacity of the “traditional” cold storage panels with a PUR core and the rest of the insulating materials normally used in insulating sandwich panels.

In other words, if using the HI-F panel with PUR core it will be necessary to provide a 25% thicker panel than if the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is used, therefore reducing the useful surface of the store and increasing the implementation costs.

The declared heat insulation

values of the HI-PIRM F CLASS

1 panel are accredited and

certified by AENOR, by means of

in plant annual audits, sampling and tests in

accredited laboratories.

The tables on the following page indicate the energy losses through the enclosure (W/m2) according to the thickness of the panel and the temperature gradient between the two surfaces of an enclosure built with the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel or with the HI-F panel with PUR type insulating core.

HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 COLD STORAGE PANEL,CERTIF IED FIRE SAFETY.

EXAMPLE 1: Here a positive store with a 40 ºC gradient is assumed. If the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 is used, the minimum necessary thickness will be 100 mm (losses of 8.80 W/m2 and a maximum of 9,0 is recommended). If the HI-PUR F panel is used, on the other hand, a thickness of 125 mm (losses of 7.60 W/m2) will be necessary.

HI-PUR F panel / Loss of energy through the enclosure (W/m2)

HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel / Loss of energy through the enclosure (W/m2)

EXAMPLE 2: We assume an enclosure with a 200 mm thick panel and 80 ºC gradient. In this case, if the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is used the losses would be 8.8 W/m2. If the HI-PUR F panel is used the losses would be 9.6 W/m2.

In other words, using the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel will mean reducing the loss of energy through the enclosure by 9%, with the corresponding saving in the store cooling costs that this reduction in energy losses would mean.

The high rigidity, structural stability and lightweight of the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel allows for reducing the number of necessary supports and suspensions, therefore simplifying assembly and reducing the overall implementation costs.

The panel’s resistant mechanical properties, certified with the N mark from AENOR, have been determined through campaigns of in-lab and structural sizing tests according to standard EN 14509.

5. MECHANICAL STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel has high performance mechanical strength, reaching for example maximum free distances between supports of up to 9 m, or withstanding maximum loads of up to 200 kg/m2.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel is available with two types of joints, both with high rigidity, double tongue and groove which guarantees the best tightness with simple and fast assembly.

6. JOINT TIGHTNESS

Air and water tightness tests for the panel and its joints, conducted in the approved APPLUS laboratory.

The FJ joint is certified by APPLUS as not requiring additional silicon sealing (under the permeability parameters indicated). However, when required by the pressure and hygrometry conditions of the premises, an additional sealing can be provided during assembly, that remains hidden inside the joint.

The FS joint, on the other hand, requires additional silicon sealing, on the outside, during assembly.

In both cases, the double tongue and groove and its flexible closed cell polyethylene joint guarantees the best tightness and durability of the enclosure with easy assembly.

The high tightness of the

new FJ joint, regarding

both water and air, is

accredited and certified by

APPLUS using in-lab tests, according to

standards EN 14509, EN 12114 and EN 12865,

Steel with guaranteed quality.

The outer metallic surfaces of the HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel are made using hot galvanised structural steel plating sections, with certified quality and laminated by the sector’s leading steel companies.

The steel plating of the panels and their metallic and organic coatings are free of SVHC (“Substances of Very High Concern”), such as for example heavy metals, in conformity with both the current requirements of the European regulation REACH and with future requirements that the regulation will include in its next review.

Maximum durability.

To guarantee the maximum durability of its panels, even in the most corrosive atmospheres, HUURRE uses a wide range of coatings and uses state-of-the-art metallic coatings: HDX, PVDF, PET, INOX 304, etc.

HUURRE also has coatings suitable for contact with food, which are ideal for use in the food and agricultural industry. The HUURRE Technical Dept. advises its clients on the ideal coating for each specific application, considering the type of environment where the panel is to be installed, humidity, temperature, etc.

Overall quality control.

HUURRE implements strict quality control on its production processes and finished products, in order to guarantee the highest quality of its solutions for the construction industry. Consequently, the HUURRE products have obtained the most demanding certificates on both a national and international level.

All the raw materials used in manufacturing are inspected upon arrival at the HUURRE premises, using specific reception controls for each material.

All finished products undergo strict quality control to guarantee that they conform to HUURRE’s high quality standards. The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panel, for example, undergoes tests for bending, compression and traction, thermal conductivity, core density, accelerated ageing, and dimensional control.

The Overall Quality Management System by HUURRE, according to ISO 9001 is audited and certified by AENOR and IQNet.

CIM manufacturing process.

HUURRE develops a flexible production system that can reduce its delivery terms, optimise its costs and obtain the sector’s best quality-price ratio for its products.

The system guarantees full traceability of all the materials used in manufacturing, from the receipt on the HUURRE premises to when the finished panel is delivered to the client.

The HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 sandwich insulating panels are manufactured using a continuous process, that is fully computer-controlled and monitored constantly, and it is made up of the following stages:

▪ Plating, sectioning and preheating.▪ Injecting the PIRM CLASS 1 core.▪ Attaching the polyethylene side seals.▪ Pressing and cutting.▪ Setting.▪ Stacking and packaging.

HUURRE’s two CIM production lines can produce HI-PIRM F CLASS 1 panels up to 200 mm thick, 1150 mm wide and 18 m long.
