Iconic Australian Tea TreeAn ancient bush medicine

Melaleuca alternifolia is native to the sub-tropical, coastal regions of Northern New South Wales.

Anti-clockwise from above left: Planted as tender seedlings, Tea Tree plants take 2 years to mature before they are ready to be harvested. Tea Tree branches are cut off 5cms from the ground and chopped by the harvester into small pieces. The harvested material is loaded into distillation bins ready for extraction.

Wander across the gentle slopes of rural farmland 345kms north of Sydney and you will be welcomed by an abundance of native wildlife. Black-necked storks known as the Jabiru, echidnas, frogs, turtles and kangaroos all live in harmony amongst the abundant Tea Tree plantations, supporting a symbiotic ecosystem. One of Australia’s oldest bush medicines Tea Tree is native to the swampy, coastal regions of North-Eastern New South Wales and South-Eastern Queensland. Able to tolerate extreme weather conditions including floods and drought, Melaleuca alternifolia flourishes in the well-drained sand and clay based soil found in the region.

Distilled from the aromatic leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, this bright and herbaceous oil offers remarkable anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties long prized by the indigenous people of Australia. Now supported by extensive research and development, Tea Tree oil is highly prized as an iconic ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products. Committed to sustainable farming practices, Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s supplier produces Certified Organic Tea Tree oil unsurpassed in quality and purity.

Ancient bush remedyThe Australian bush has provided the means of survival and wellbeing for Aboriginal people for over 40,000 years. Supporting both spiritual and physical health, local Bundjalung people utilised the Tea Tree plant to treat a wide range of ailments.

The leafy branches were placed over a fire and the vapours inhaled for coughs and colds. An infusion of crushed leaves soaked in water was then drunk or washed over the body for fevers and headaches. A poultice using the leaves, bark and animal fat was applied to the skin to treat wounds and infections.

With supplies from Europe scarce and infrequent, early settlers were also known to utilise Tea Tree as a bush medicine for wounds and infections. In the 1920s, scientific experiments found that Tea Tree oil’s antiseptic potency was far stronger than the commonly used antiseptic of the time. During the Second World War, Tea Tree was an essential item in military first aid kits, used extensively as >

an antiseptic. Highly valued, Tea Tree bush cutters were reportedly exempt from military duty.

For several decades Tea Tree oil was harvested from naturally grown ‘bush’ stands. The plant material was cut by hand and distilled in the bush using a makeshift wood-fired still. With the advent of penicillin in 1940’s, the popularity of Tea Tree oil waned until the renaissance of natural products in the 1970’s brought new opportunities for commercial production.

Modern Cultivation of Tea TreeA member of the Myrtaceae family, Tea Tree is an evergreen shrub able to reach over 10 metres in height. It is characterised by its papery bark and thin needle-like leaves alternating on each side of the slim branches. From Spring to early Summer, the shrub is awash with fluffy, white masses of bottlebrush-shaped flowers.

The native habitat and birthplace of the tea tree oil industry is the low-lying, swampy coastal area surrounding the river regions of North-Eastern New South Wales and Southern Queensland. 71 metres above sea level, the area experiences high levels of rainfall during Summer and early Autumn with low lying areas prone to flooding.

While Melaleuca alternifolia is an impressively hardy plant able to cope with varied weather conditions, Tea Tree plantations require suitable drainage to ensure the soil doesn’t become too water logged in this high rainfall area. Tea Tree plants are grown from seed in a specialist nursery and carefully tended for 4-6 months before being planted between August and February. For 2 years, the plants are left to flourish and grow to 3 metres before the first harvest. During this time, the trees are supported with organic fertilisers to ensure the consistent nutrient level of the soil.

Harvesting begins in August until November, before the onslaught of the harsh Australian Summer. Timing of the harvest is critical as harvesting early risks frost damage to new growth and a later harvest limits growth and subsequent oil yield. The plants are harvested by a coppicing process whereby the whole plant is cut off close to ground level and chipped into smaller fragments. >

Tea Tree essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and stems. The extracted oil can range from colourless to light yellow in colour, with a strong, fresh medicinal aroma. Approximately 1 cubic metre of plant material is required to obtain 2.5 kilograms of the aromatic essential oil.

Science and health applicationsSafety and efficacy studies have played an important role in supporting the development of a dynamic and internationally competitive Australian Tea Tree oil industry. Scientific research has established the demonstrable anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and insect-repellent properties of Tea Tree oil.

The major constituent of Tea Tree oil is terpinene-4-ol which provides the key anti-bacterial and anti-fungal action. The Australian Standard for Tea Tree oil requires that the terpinene-4-ol content shall be at least 30%, ensuring the final oil is pure and uncontaminated by any synthetic or waste products.

The oil’s outstanding cleansing and purifying properties make it a popular addition to protective skincare products. Used in a gel formulation for a face cleanser or body wash, Tea Tree oil will help to soothe and heal acne prone and inflamed skin. In haircare, Tea Tree can be applied to control and remove dandruff and is often utilised for the treatment and prevention of head lice.

Used in a diluted solution, Tea Tree oil is a proficient aid for cleaning and dressing wounds and abrasions, treating athlete’s foot conditions and soothing sunburn. For muscular aches and pains, Tea Tree oil can be added to a massage oil or in a bath oil for relief.

With a warm, potent herbaceous aroma, Tea Tree oil can also have a revitalising and uplifting effect on your mind while opening airways and relieving congested nasal passages. It blends well with floral, wood, green and spice scents including Cinnamon, Clove, Cypress, Lavender, Lemon and Eucalyptus essential oils. 1
