STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Moruj Alhma Hometown: Saudi Arabia Level: 7

How long have you been at CESL? I came to CESL in August 2015 so it has almost been 7 months.

Have you enjoyed Tucson so far? I think that Tucson is a lovely and quiet town. The people are very friendly here. I especially like it here because there are cinemas.

How often do you go to the cinema? I go to the cinema 3 times a month.

What kind of movies do you like? I like drama, comedy, and action movies. I really don’t like horror movies because it gives me nightmares when I go to bed.

What is your favorite movie so far in 2016? I really like Ride Along 2.

What do you like to do for fun? I like do draw graffiti or read Arabic crime novels.

What motivated you to get into graffiti? I drew graffiti with my best friends together as a hobby. Now I do it when I’m stressed or angry, it is my safe place to go to.

What do you want to do after CESL? I want to study biology and go to medical school. I want to become a cardiologist doctor.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Karam Hometown: Al-Hassa Level: Bridge

Let’s talk about your experience with culture change. How long have you been in the US?I’ve been here for a few sessions.

Do you remember your first weeks in the US? Oh, yes. The first week, I had no apartment. I was in a hotel for 4 days. Then, I stayed 2 months in my apartment without anything to do. I would take care of my daughter and clean. I would also talk with my family every day. I would share with them about my concerns of when I would actually start school. During the 2 months, I would also help my brother who was experiencing difficulties at the university.

I imagine that you’d be anxious to start. What about people, how has your experience been with people here? Usually, I find them friendly and easy going. It’s rare to find a mean person.

How is this different from back home? It’s different home. The people aren’t mean, but they don’t smile at people that they don’t know. When I go back home over the vacation, I forget to NOT smile.

Do you like smiling a lot? **A big smile spreads across her face** Yes! I want to smile to everyone when I go home.

Smiling is great. How do you find the pace of American life? You really have to manage your time well. It’s important to separate tasks and get most of them done on time or else it affects the next task.

Do you like this kind of pace? It’s challenging. It helps you feel, though, the importance of living in the moment. You can’t postpone anything.

What about home, do you miss anything from back home? To be honest, the food. It’s hard not having my mom’s cooking or the food from restaurants there.

Do you cook well? Yes, but not like my mom!

Maybe she can send some food over. Any final advice or motivations for the newsletter? I’ve always told myself that whatever the problems or hard things, I’ve put it in my mind to just go with it and achieve my goals.

Ask CESL

What do I do if the printer is not working?:

● See if one of the student workers in the Student Learning Center (Ahmad, Anjana, Jing, Sophia, Tanner) is available to help.

● If no student workers are available, you can email [email protected] and share your problem. Make sure to tell them which computer you were using (there are numbers attached to each monitor), and which printer you sent it to (most likely the one in the SLC or the computer lab). If the printer gives you an error message, please share that in the email as well.

What happens if I send a document to the printer and it doesn’t print?

● It is possible that the printer will print the document later once it is working again. If you send a document to the printer but it doesn’t print, do not send the document to the printer again before the printer is working. This would merely add a second version of your document to the list of jobs for the printer, and would likely result in two of your documents being eventually printed.

● If you send a document to the printer, you should either wait until the printer is working, or cancel your print job. This can be done by clicking on the little icon of the printer on the bottom right corner of your screen. If you are having trouble canceling a print job, ask a student worker for help.

Can I print double sided in the SLC?

● No, unfortunately double sided printing jams the printer and has been disabled.

Is there a limit to the number of pages I can print at CESL?

● Yes, students may print up to 200 pages per session. If you need to go over your limit you can pay to print more. To avoid going over your limit it is important to make sure you only print what you need and that you cancel print jobs that have not gone through.
