The CHINA DREAM: Passions, Policies and Power
Chinas cultural, political and civil landscape is continuing to change profoundly, in line with
her extraordinary economic progress. Currently, the Chinese leadership seeks to satisfy the
Chinese peoples desire for an increasingly higher standard of living, world-class education,
health, food and water security, clean living environments, as well as global cultural
influence in the arts, media, fashion, entertainment, technological innovation, research and
development.
In every one of these areas (and more), the China Dream looks set to capture the worlds
attention anew in the next two to three decades. The ChinaDream a policy statement first
used by President Xi Jinping in November 2013 to denote the great rejuvenation of the Chinese
nation - has been dissected extensively by the worlds media and China watchers but the vision

remains elusive and oblique. What does it mean? What does it comprise? How will it be realised?
What are the emotional, political, sociological, legal, cultural, ideological, technological and ethical
dimensions of the China Dream?
Against this backdrop, we are delighted to announce the first international conference in the
UK to examine the China Dream. Hosted and organized by the University of Leicesters
China Studies Research Alliance (ChiSRA), the conference represents a unique opportunity
to bring several key dimensions of the China Dream phenomenon together in provocative and
exciting ways. We welcome multi-disciplinary and innovative papers from across the arts
and social sciences business, international relations, politics, economics, cultural studies,
media and communications, urban and cultural geography, sociology, history, work,
employment, gender studies and so on -- on the contours, implications and future directions
of the China Dream.
Thus, themes and topics include, but are not limited to the following questions:
How has the China Dream evolved? When, what and how will it play out in the years to come? What are its political, cultural and economic dimensions and implications? How relevant and/or reliant is it on cross-national and cross-cultural contexts of
understanding and expression?
How will it affect production, consumption and innovation?All papers should be in English.
SubmissionPlease submit extended abstracts of 500 to 600 wordsto:[email protected] no later than the
25 April 2014 (Friday). At least one author of accepted papers must be available to present
the work in person at the conference. Successful presenters will be notified on
21 May 2014.
Details of a specially-commissioned edited volume of the best papers will be released nearer
the date of the conference.
Delegate FeesThe fee is all-inclusive. It includes:
four-star quality accommodation at the University of Leicesters newly openedconference venue, College Court
