There is emerging evidence to suggest that rural-urban migration has important benefits that can assist in poverty reduction, which dominant development and policy discourses often overlook. These include resource and skills transfers to sending communities, business development and improved trade and access to social services. Over time, emerging patterns of trade and support can help build resilience to economic, climatic and even political shocks. However, achieving these goals demands effective policy frameworks and planning founded on strong empirical foundations. The aim of this conference is to bring together prominent researchers with an interest in urbanization, rural-urban migration and related topics in sub-Saharan Africa. Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words by 20 August 2012 for one of the thematic sessions listed below:  urbanisation data and trends;  the role of urbanisation in poverty reduction;  the impacts and drivers of youth migration to towns and cities;  urban vulnerabilities and adaptation to climate change;  urban governance and service provision;  and land markets in urban areas. Abstracts should summarize the topic and analysis to be presented and should be based on original research that has not been published previously. Abstracts will be reviewed for selection by the conference organising committee, and will remain confidential. Participation costs for selected attendees will be covered. Please submit abstracts to <[email protected]> and copy to <[email protected]>. CALL FOR PAPERS

International Conference on Urbanization and Rural-Urban Migration in Sub-

Saharan Africa

26-27 November 2012, Nairobi

The Migrating Out of Poverty Research Programme Consortium is accepting abstracts for papers for

its ‘International Conference on Urbanization and Rural-Urban Migration in Sub-Saharan Africa’, to

be hosted by the Migrating out Poverty’s East African research partner, the African Migration and

Development Policy Centre (AMADPOC) in Nairobi on 26-27 November 2012.

There is emerging evidence to suggest that rural-urban migration has important benefits that can

assist in poverty reduction, which dominant development and policy discourses often overlook.

These include resource and skills transfers to sending communities, business development and

improved trade and access to social services. Over time, emerging patterns of trade and support can

help build resilience to economic, climatic and even political shocks. However, achieving these goals

demands effective policy frameworks and planning founded on strong empirical foundations.

The aim of this conference is to bring together prominent researchers with an interest in

urbanization, rural-urban migration and related topics in sub-Saharan Africa. Please submit abstracts

of no more than 300 words by 20 August 2012 for one of the thematic sessions listed below:

  urbanisation data and trends;

  the role of urbanisation in poverty reduction;

  the impacts and drivers of youth migration to towns and cities;

  urban vulnerabilities and adaptation to climate change;

  urban governance and service provision;

  and land markets in urban areas.

Abstracts should summarize the topic and analysis to be presented and should be based on original

research that has not been published previously. Abstracts will be reviewed for selection by the

conference organising committee, and will remain confidential. Participation costs for selected

attendees will be covered. Please submit abstracts to < [email protected]> and copy to

<[email protected]>.
