How to stop food wasteFood waste is a huge problem in today’s world. Every year, we waste one third of the food we produce. In the UK alone, people waste 15 million tons of food every year. This is mainly fresh food such as fruit, vegetables, bread and milk. We have to stop wasting good food! Fortunately, there are simple things we can all do to help.

Shop carefullyWith so much delicious food in our supermarkets, it’s easy to buy things that we don’t need. This means that people often have more food than they can eat before its ‘use-by’ date. When you go shopping, write a list of the things you need and try not to buy other items.

Save food for another day There’s often food left after a meal. There’s no need to throw this away. We can keep cold meat, vegetables and potatoes in the fridge to eat the next day. Cooked meat and salad is good to use in packed lunches.

Make treatsYou can make delicious snacks from food that you would normally throw away. Apples and bananas that are too soft to eat are good for making healthy drinks. You can also add them to cakes. Did you know that you can make homemade crisps from the skin of potatoes or vegetables? (Just cover them in oil, add a little salt and bake them in the oven for about 20 minutes.)

Make a compost binWhat about the food we can’t eat – such as mouldy bread or food that is past its ‘use-by’ date? We don’t have to throw it in the bin. Instead, make a compost bin. Turning old food into compost is good for the environment. We can use the compost in our gardens to help plants to grow.

It describes food waste around the world.

It gives advice about how to reduce food waste.

It tells you how to make nutritious food.

Dear Dr Josephine,My friend has an eating problem and I don’t know what to do. She stuffs herself with food at meals, then goes to the bathroom to throw up. I know what is going on and I’m worried about her.

Mandy

Dear Mandy,It’s hard to have a friend with an eating problem. They usually don’t want to talk about it. But you can try to help your friend anyway. People who stuff themselves and throw up can become very ill. They don’t often go and see a doctor. They need friends and family to take the first steps for them. Perhaps you should talk to an adult. Or look up some websites on the internet. Your friend might not want your help at first. Be honest with your friend; tell her this problem is serious. But tell her, too, that people can get better.

Reading1 Read the article below quickly. Who started the Never Again movement?

◆ A terrible day14th February, 2017 is a day that Emma González will never forget. It was almost the end of the school day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Florida, USA. Emma had just finished selling flowers as part of a Valentine’s Day event. Suddenly, she heard an alarm. An ex-student had entered the school with a gun. 17 students died that day and 15 more were injured.

◆ Gun violence in the USAGun violence has become a part of life for American people. Since 1996, more than 1,000 high school students have died in school shootings in the USA and the lives of their surviving friends and families have changed forever.

◆ The fight against gun violenceEmma González is fighting for better gun control in her country. She belongs to the Never Again movement. This group was started by students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High after the shooting. Their goal is to stop gun violence by bringing changes to America’s gun laws.

◆ Speeches and protestsThree days after the shooting, Emma gave her first speech about why her country needs better gun control. The speech became famous in the USA and other countries. On 24th March, Emma gave a second speech at the March for Our Lives protest. This was a huge event that the Never Again movement had organised. Famous people such as George and Amal Clooney, Justin Timberlake and film producer Steven Spielberg donated money to support the event and hundreds of thousands of people took part.

◆ Continuing the fightEmma and the Never Again movement have inspired people across the USA to fight for better gun control. There have already been some changes to the gun laws in Florida. But Emma knows there is a lot more to do. She is determined to continue her fight until schools in the USA are safe places to study.

b) You’ll support it, won’t you?

c) No, not right now! But you’re right, I am thinking about a serious subject. I’ve just been

Caitlin Hi, Alice. I’m back from Down Under!

Alice Welcome back! How was the holiday?

Caitlin It was amazing! We spent the first week in Sydney. We went to the Opera House and climbed the Harbour Bridge. And of course, I spent a lot of time on Bondi Beach. It’s a great place for surfing!

Alice I didn’t know you could surf.

Caitlin I couldn’t surf before the holiday, but I took lessons. I’m quite good now.

Alice Great! Where did you go after Sydney?

Caitlin We went to Kangaroo Island to the south of Adelaide. It’s a beautiful island with lots of amazing wildlife.

Alice Let me guess – there are kangaroos there!

Caitlin Yes, but there are lots of other interesting animals, too, like koalas and goannas. And in the north of the island, there are even penguins! The most unusual animal we saw was a platypus.

Alice A platypus? What’s that?

Caitlin It’s an animal with a beak* like a duck and a furry body. It’s got a thick tail. It looks very strange, but it’s quite cute.

Alice Amazing! Did you go anywhere else after Kangaroo Island?

Caitlin We flew to Darwin in the north of Australia. We went on a safari tour in Kakadu National Park. There are beautiful waterfalls there and also lots of dangerous crocodiles!

Alice Sounds scary!

Caitlin I didn’t get too close! The national park is also a very important place for Aborigine culture. There are Aboriginal pictures on rocks around the park. Some of them are 50,000 years old!

Alice That’s incredible! Did you come home after that?

Caitlin Yes, we did! We flew from Darwin back to the UK, with two stops on the way. It took 36 hours!

Alice When did you get home?

Caitlin At five o’clock this morning! I’m going back to bed now!VOCABULARY: *beak – Schnabel

CAROLINE’S BLOG

There are many charities that

work hard to protect the Great

Barrier Reef. I spent a week with one

of them.➠ Day 1I’m really tired after my long flight, but it’s great to be here. I’m working with eleven other volunteers and they’re all very friendly. Our team leader is called Mark. He’s very interesting and he knows a lot about wildlife.

➠ Day 2We spent today cleaning the beach. Plastic is a huge danger to sea life. They can mistake it for food or get trapped in it. I collected two bags of rubbish, so I was pleased with my work!Tomorrow, we start work at the Turtle Rescue Centre on Fitzroy Island.

➠ Day 3We got up and had breakfast early this morning. Our ferry was at 7.30. I spent the day cleaning the turtles’ tanks with Lara, a university student from Salzburg. We worked really hard, but we didn’t see any turtles!

➠ Day 4We took the ferry to Fitzroy Island again. This time, I helped to prepare food for the turtles. I must have chopped up hundreds of vegetables! The best part of the day was feeding the turtles their lunch!

➠ Day 5Today, we stayed at the centre to prepare for our trip tomorrow. We’re going on a dive at the Great Barrier Reef. Mark wants us to record information about the animals and coral. We all have a chart, an underwater camera and a set of instructions. I can’t wait!

➠ Day 6Today was amazing! We spent the morning diving in the sea around the coral reef. I saw seven different types of fish and lots of different coloured coral. I hope that the information I recorded will be useful. I go home tomorrow! J

➠ Day 7It’s been a really interesting week and I’m sad to be leaving. I’ve swapped email addresses with the other volunteers so we can stay in touch. Mark wants us to tell other people about the trip so that they can come and volunteer, too.

Reading1 Read the text. Then choose the correct answers.

Doctors in the bush

Last year, Matt and his family were camping in a

National Park in southeastern Australia. One day

Matt’s son hurt his eye badly. Matt did some first aid,

but there was no hospital for miles. So Matt called the

Flying Doctors and half an hour later, he and his son were on an aircraft to the nearest hospital.

The doctors gave his son drugs to help with the pain until he got to Adelaide.

“We live in Sydney, so I never thought we might need the Flying Doctors one day,” Matt said.

“It’s a fantastic organisation, and one that will help you, wherever you are.”

1 Why did the aircraft take Matt’s son to

Adelaide?

Because that’s where Matt lived.

Because that’s where the nearest

Reading1 Read the interview below quickly. Which sentence is true?

Presenter Hello and welcome to Teen Views. The topic of this week’s show is collections. When

I was a kid, my friends and I used to collect all kinds of things: stamps, football cards,

comics, different kinds of toys … But is collecting things still popular with young

people today? Our first caller is Daisy. Hi, Daisy, do you think young people still collect

things?

Daisy Yes, I think they do, but the things that they collect are different. None of my friends

collect stamps or comics, for example.

Presenter So what do people collect?

Daisy Well, my friends and I collect stickers.

Presenter Stickers? But kids have always collected stickers, haven’t they?

Daisy Yes, but I don’t mean paper stickers. I mean stickers for my phone. I use them in

messages.

Presenter Oh, I see! Of course! So how many stickers have you got?

Daisy I’ve got about 200. I didn’t start my collection long ago. Some of my friends have got

more than 500.

Presenter And is it expensive?

Daisy No, not at all. That’s one of the best things about it. They’re often free. Sometimes you

have to buy them, but they only cost about one or two pounds for about 30 stickers.

Presenter That sounds great. Thanks for calling, Daisy. Next, we’ve got Leon. Hello, Leon, do you

collect anything?

Leon Yes, I do. I collect old records.

Presenter But today you can download any song that you like and listen to it. It’s easy! Why do

you need records?

Leon Well, I don’t need them – because I download a lot of music – but I love collecting

them! Some of my albums have amazing pictures on the front. And on the back, there’s

a list of all the songs, with information about who wrote and performed them. You

don’t get that with downloads.

Presenter I suppose that’s true. So, what made you start collecting records?

Leon My dad gave me some of his old records. I thought they were really interesting, so I

started going to markets and second-hand shops and collecting more of them.

Presenter That’s a great story. Thanks for telling us about your collection, Leon.

Reading1 Read about the kids’ collections. Then write the names of the people below.

I find them on beaches or on walks in the mountains. One thing that will surprise you

when you start looking for them is that you find unusual ones everywhere. I found

my favourite one when I was on holiday in Italy. It’s black with lots of tiny holes in it.

I think it came from a volcano.

Ben

I’ve got about 70 of these. Sometimes I buy them from music shops or online, but

usually, I get them as presents. This one is really special. I got it when I was watching

my favourite band at a concert. The guitarist threw it into the crowd and I caught it!

Alisha

I’ve got about 30 in my collection, but this is my favourite one – it’s the Manchester

United one. My cousin went to Barcelona last month and he got me theirs. I wear it at

the weekend, especially if it’s hot. It keeps the sun off my face.

Toby

Most people send texts or post messages online when they’re on holiday, but I think

these are much more interesting. I have a group of friends at school and we all send

them to each other when we go to interesting places. I also use a site online: I post

one to someone in another country and then I get one back!

Carla

They’re not just fun to collect – they’re useful and fashionable, too. I like to buy

them in different colours so that I always have one that matches what I’m wearing.

My favourite is purple and it’s made of beautiful fabric. I use this on special

occasions, like going to the theatre.

Maya

There are about 150 of them in my collection and I’ve had some of them since I was

about six. When I find an unusual one, I buy it. They usually cost less than a pound.

I put my favourite ones on my backpack or my jacket.

Mum Where was that?

Claire In my room! But later, when I looked for them before I went to the gym, I couldn’t find them.

Mum Let’s ask your brother if he has seen them. Jake! JAKE!
