Bell work 9/23/14
You are testing an unknown chemical. You add 1 mL of the unknown solution to a test tube and 1 mL of indicator solution. The solution turns bright purple.
Tell me if the substance is acidic or basic.Give the Independent and dependent variable.

4-1 THE ROLE OF CLIMATE
![Page 4: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Objectives
• Identify the causes of climate.• Explain how Earth’s temperature
range is maintained.• Identify Earth’s three main climate
zones.

What is climate?• Weather: day-to-day (d-d) conditions of Earth’s atmosphere
(atm) at a particular time and place.• Climate: average, year-after-year (yr-yr) conditions of
temperature (temp) and precipitation (precip) in a particular region.

Gasses in the atmosphere• Nitrogen (N) =78%• Oxygen (O) = 20%• Carbon Dioxide (CO2)= 0.036%• Everything Else = 1.964%
![Page 9: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
How the Earth Stays Warm
•Carbon Dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapor (H20 g), and other atmospheric (atm’c) gasses trap heat energy and maintain Earth’s temperature (temp) range.•Known as greenhouse gasses.
![Page 10: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Greenhouse effect
•Greenhouse effect: heat is naturally trapped by the layer of greenhouse gasses.
![Page 11: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Climate differs by latitude• As a result of the differences of latitude and angle of heating,
Earth has 3 main climate zones: Polar, temperate, and tropical.
![Page 12: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Climate Zones• Polar: cold, (sun) rays strike at low angle• Temperate: b/w polar and tropical; temp changes over course
of yr• Tropical: very warm and wet; nearly direct rays
![Page 13: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Effects of Wind
![Page 14: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Effects of Oceans
![Page 15: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Effects of Landmasses
•Mountains cause moist air to rise• It cools, and condenses• Forms clouds: precip to mountains•Areas on far side of mountains dry
![Page 16: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Wrap it up
• Greenhouse effect: traps gasses inside atm• The 3 zones are regions with drastic
temperature differences due to latitude.• 2 factors that determine climate:
temperature, moisture, transport of heat (by wind, water, and over land).
![Page 17: Ch 4.1 Introduction to Ecology](https://reader038.vdocument.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c41a17bb61eb2b468b4677/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Activity• Lets Draw!• Concept Cartoon• Draw me a cartoon (2+ scenes) to answer the following:• How might the same species of animal vary (adapt) to different
regions?• Ex: Rabbit: polar: white
• Temperate: brownNot from around here are you?
