• Trapuntoisanelegantquiltingtechniquethatraisessur-facesonthefrontof aquiltbyeitherpaddingitfromthebackorbystuffingitwithbatting.InItalian,trapuntotranslatesas“toembroider”andinLatinittranslatesas“toprick”.Itisreportedtohaveoriginatedasearlyasthe14thcentury,andwasbroughttoAmericabyItalianandEnglishimmigrants.Traditionally,trapuntowasdoneentirelybyhand,thenlaterbyfreemotionembroi-dery.OESDhasnowdevelopedatechniquethatallowsmachineembroidererstoachievethesameregallookwiththeirembroiderymachine.

• Eachmotif consistsof twodifferentfiles.File Awillcreatethe“pillow”thatwillgivetheraisedeffect,andFile Bwillfinishthedesignworkandcreatethetrapun-topiece.NOTE:Acontrastingthreadwasusedforthebenefitof thestepbystepphotos.Traditionallytoneontonethreadwasused-butfeelfreetobebold!

1. Hooponelayerof OESDUltraClean&Tearstabilizer.2. Sewonlythefirstcolorof theFile A,whichwillsew

onlytheplacementstitch.PHOTO 13. Cutapieceof extraloftbattinglargeenoughtocom-

pletelycovertheplacementstitch.Spraywithtemporarysprayadhesiveandlayoverstitching.

4. Adjustfootpressureif possible.Sewthesecondcolorof File A,whichwillsewthecuttingline.If youhaveproblemswiththefootgettingcaughtinthebatting,seethehintsbelow.PHOTO 2

5. Unhoopthebackingandcutoutthepillowveryclosetothestitcheswithoutcuttingintothestitches.Thiswillholdtheedgeof thebattingtogetherforeasierhandling.

6. Setthe“pillow”aside-youwillneeditwhensewingthesecondembroideryfile. PHOTO 3

7. Hoopyourbackingfabricwithrightsidedownandonelayerof lowloftbatting.Nootherstabilizerisneces-sary.

8. Sewonlythefirstcolorof theFile B,whichwillsewonlytheplacementstitch,usingwash-awaythreadinboththemachineandthebobbin.Thiswillkeepthemultiplelayersof stitchingfromlookingbulky.

9. Lay“pillow”insidetheplacementlines,usingtemporarysprayadhesivetokeepitinplace.PHOTO 4

10. Lightlyspraythewrongsideof thetopfabricwithtem-porarysprayadhesive.Coverthepillowwithtopfabricrightsideup.PHOTO 5

11. Adjustfootpressureif possible.Sewthesecondcolorof thefile,whichisthebastingstitch,whilestillusingwash-awaythread.PHOTO 6

12. Lastly,removethewash-awaythreadfromthemachineandbobbinandreplaceyournormalembroiderythread.Sewthefinalcolorchange,whichwillsewthefinedetail.PHOTO 7

Hints:• Whensewingwithwash-awaythread,itmaybebestto

reducemachinespeedtominimizethreadbreakage.• If youhaveproblemswiththeembroideryfootgetting

caughtinthebattingthereareseveralthingsyoucando.Usethelargestembroideryfootpossible.Useacouch-ingfootif possible.Youcanalsousethefootcontrolforthiscolorchangesothatif thefootbeginstogetstuckyoucansimplystopandtrimawayanyfibersthatarecaughtbeforecontinuing.

• Pleasenotethatthewash-awaythreadisoptional.Wehaveincludeditintheinstructionssothatyoucanachievethemostauthenticlook.If youopttonotusethewash-awaythreadyourtrapuntowillstillhavetheraisedeffect,butsomeof thestitchescouldbebulkierthanintraditionaltrapunto.

• Tomakeyourdesignasbeautifulonthebackasitisonthefront,usethesamethreadinthebobbinthatyouusedtostitchthedesignanduseabalancedtension(seeyourmachinemanualformoreinformationonhowtoachievethis).
