As you're switching out of summer clothes, please remember to save your outgrown children's clothing for our next spring/summer collection. Also, after filling our pantry to capacity, I brought over several grocery bags to the food cupboard at The Ridley Park United Methodist Church. You can also put it on a white pew card. Place it in the offering plate.

We are already looking ahead to the 2015 Pilgrimage. Youth must be 14 or in grades 9-12 (entering grade 9 in the fall, or graduating from grade 12 in June, 2015, and everyone in between. Because of the large number of potential attendees (perhaps as many as 18, plus at least four chaperones) we feel that those going should make some

4

strong commitment to the life of the parish, such as reader, acolyte, choir member, nursery or Vacation Church School helper, as well as helping with the Youth Booth at the Fair and Pumpkin Patch and with the Epiphany Dinner and Auction. In order to build community among the attendees we are asking that each come to the 9:00 Sunday morning youth Sunday School class at least twice a month—the first Sunday of every month will be a youth group meeting, and they may take their pick of one other regular class. And because raising the money necessary will be a larger undertaking than in the past, we are asking parents to participate in a Pilgrimage Facilitation Task Force to help plan and carry out various fundraising activities. We want the Pilgrimage to be affordable for all families. Where we go will probably depend on how much money we can raise. Please speak to Ken Mobley or Judy Buck-Glenn if you have questions, or need suggestions for other ways in which your child may be able to participate in the life of the parish. And please have your child sign up on the sheet on Judy Buck-Glenn’s door only.

Seaman’s Institute of Philadelphia Ditty Bags – Items still needed are: sewing kits, pens, notepaper (small writing tablets), envelopes and men’s deodorant. The bin for the Seaman’s Institute collections is under the shelf in the vestibule with the green doors.

Activity bags for children can be found on a rack in the back of church, under the memorial table. Bags with pink stickers are for younger children – up to age 5 or so. Please take any activity your child completes home with you and return the bags to the rack. Please do not take crayons, just the children’s work, home with you.

Children’s Pew Envelopes: All the money collected from children in Sunday School and Children’s Chapel and from Lenten Mite Boxes goes to support our two ChildFund children, Chanel and Jay-R. All proceeds from the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper also go to these children. There are special offering envelopes for children in the pews. If your child is going to put money in the plate, please give them a children’s pew envelope. Please note that ANY donation made in these special envelopes will be credited to our ChildFund children—you don’t have to be a child!

5

Pull-up Tabs: If you get pull-up tabs from beverage, soup or pet food cans, including (colored tabs). The Outreach Committee is collecting tabs for Ronald McDonald House. There is a marked clear plastic jar on the counter near the green doors where you can drop the tabs.

The Outreach Committee has an emergency food cupboard here, and we also help supply the food pantry at Ridley Park United Methodist Church.  If you can donate any dry and/or canned food items, please bring them in at any time and place them in the basket at the back of church or by the green doors – think protein.

CD’s for Elwyn: If you have CD’s that you are getting rid of, we have a pink box near the green doors for CD’s for Elwyn. Hymns, children’s music, lively music of almost any kind, are very welcome.

Please remember Christ Church in your will and estate planning. If you need further information on how to make provisions for the church, please speak to the rector.

A Note on Today’s Readings

Proper 11: Sunday closest to July 20—Year C

The term “liturgy” has two meanings: time spent in Christ’s presence and time spent in service to others. If our lives do not express both of these activities, then we are failing to celebrate the liturgy (the work of the people of God) which is the mark of being a Christian.

Today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke gives priority to the time spent in Christ’s presence. This is not to say that our work of ministry is unimportant or only secondary, but that it can only be done adequately and without anxiety if it is based on and finds its strength from our communion with our Lord.

As we continue to read the epistle to the Colossians, Paul tells us that the mystery that lies behind reality has been revealed in Christ. It is the life that we share in Christ by virtue of his dying and rising. In baptism, we enter that life, and it becomes our life. It is in that sharing of Christ’s life that we are empowered to minister and to pray as members of Christ’s Body.

The Celebrant says

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever.   Amen.

The Celebrant says

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The following is said, all standing

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ,with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading Amos 8:1-12

All sit.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Amos.

This is what the Lord God showed me—a basket of summer fruit. He said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass them by. The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day,” says the Lord God; “the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place. Be silent!” Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat.” The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt? On that day, says the Lord God, I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day. The time is surely coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.

13

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm

Remain seated.

Psalm 52

Quid gloriaris?

1 You tyrant, why do you boast of wickedness *   against the godly all day long?

2 You plot ruin;   your tongue is like a sharpened razor, *   O worker of deception.

3 You love evil more than good *   and lying more than speaking the truth.

4 You love all words that hurt, *   O you deceitful tongue.

5 Oh, that God would demolish you utterly, *   topple you, and snatch you from your dwelling,   and root you out of the land of the living!

6 The righteous shall see and tremble, *   and they shall laugh at him, saying,

7 “This is the one who did not take God for a refuge, *   but trusted in great wealth   and relied upon wickedness.”

8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; *   I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.

9 I will give you thanks for what you have done *   and declare the goodness of your Name in the presence   of the godly.

Second Reading Colossians 1:15-28

A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in Colossus.

Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him—provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Great Thanksgiving

All remain standing.

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.

Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

22

The Celebrant continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

23

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

The Celebrant then continues

And now, as our SaviorChrist has taught us,we are bold to say,

People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive thosewho trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

A period of silence is kept.

Alleluia, Christ our passover is sacrificed for us

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Celebrant says

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
