Martin Luther
Martin Lutherwas a monk and
professorat the University ofWittenberg, where he lectured on theBible.
Through his study of the Bible, Luthercame to reject the Catholic teaching thatboth faith and good works were
necessary for salvation.
He believed human deeds werepowerless to affect God and that
salvation was through faith alone.

Martin Luther(cont.)
The idea ofjustification (beingmade right before God) by faithalone is the Protestant
Reformations chief teaching. For all Protestants, the Bible,
not the Church, became theonly source of religious truth.

The Reformation in England
(pages 397
398)
Not religion but politics brought about the
English Reformation. King Henry VIIIwanted to divorce his first
wife, Catherine of Aragon, whom he thought
could not give him a male heir. The pope was unwilling to annul (declare
invalid) his marriage, however, and Henry
turned to Englands church courts.
The archbishop of Canterbury ruled thatHenrys marriage to Catherine was null andvoid.

The Anabaptists andEffects on the Role of Women
(pages 398400)
The radical Anabaptists rejected theinvolvement of the state in churchaffairs.
To them the true Christian church was avoluntary community of adult believers who
had undergone spiritual rebirth and had
then been baptized.
This belief in adult baptism separated theAnabaptists from both Catholics andProtestants, who baptized infants.
