What:

Success Story: Developed a comprehensive strategic plan considering the manufacturing opportunities in the area to achieve long-term goals, mission and vision through specific measurable action-orientated short term goals. Practice to Follow: Considering the current involvement, activities and finances of the chapter, the manufacturing opportunities in the area and developing a mission and vision statement with all members is crucial to creating a comprehensive strategic plan that will help the chapter achieve its mission and vision.

When:

Success Story: Developed the comprehensive plan in 2013 and refreshed it in 2014. Practice to Follow: The team needs to sit together to decide the mission, vision and the long term goals initially for the committee to develop the strategic plan. The crucial activity to stay on top of the strategic plan, continuously monitor the performance of the chapter per quarter with the board members to see where we stand against the specific measurable short term goals which will help the chapter reach long-term goals.

Where:

Success Story: Monthly board meeting of the Greater Charleston Chapter 430. Practice to Follow: It is good practice to ensure that all the events and activities that the chapter does lines up with the specific short term goals, which will in turn line up with long-term goals and hence the mission and vision. Anytime any activity or event is planned in the monthly board meetings, the team thinks about how this lines up against our overall goals.

Why:

Success Story: To become the premier source for manufacturing knowledge, education and networking in the Greater Charleston, South Carolina region. Practice to Follow: When planning any event/workshop/seminar always ask the question how this event will help the chapter become the premier source of manufacturing knowledge, education and networking in the greater Charleston area.

Who:

Success Story: Dick Tiano - Chapter Chair John Oldham - Chair-Elect Kevin Beers - Treasurer Naren Sooriyaprabha - Strategic Planning Committee Chairman Practice to Follow: The strategic plan and the goals must be something the entire team desires and shares so always get participation from the

entire team while developing and executing the strategic plan.

HOW:

Success Story: Team involvement in establishing strategy and executing plans is important. Understanding headquarters award system is a must. Because we developed a strategic plan, continued updating the plan and following the plan the chapter showed continued improvement. Chapter 430 was a Bronze awardee in 2011, a Silver awardee in 2012 and a Platinum awardee in 2013. Practice to Follow: Plan long term in establishing goals for the organization and ensure the whole team is involved in creating targets; this will help the team in implementing all the specific short term goals.

Chapter overall

2012_2013_2014 Scor Suggestions for improvement:

i) Always ask for support if you need clarifications regarding the current status of manufacturing in the geographical area. There might be a lot of available resources available.

ii) Analyze current involvement of the chapter members by looking at data of the participants by type of events.

iii) Work closely with the treasurer and review budgets to see the financial standings of the chapter to develop long-term, sustainable financial goals.

Big Ah Ha Moment?

When the team looked at the overall manufacturing opportunities in the area and tied it back to the specific mission and vision statement, it was eye opening to see where we needed to prioritize resources and what the opportunities for improvement were. Once prioritization was done, and we started reviewing our chapter’s specific goals with that of the organization’s (Headquarters’) goal, our scores improved, and we have been recognized as a platinum chapter.

List of companies in the area

Members exist in the company

Work with the members to send company wide e-mail

Work with members and their management to offer

incentives to join

Members do not exist in the company

Work with members to get contact in that company and then their

management to offer incentives to join

Determine list of companies available in the area

Determine list of companies that have SME members

Page 10: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

Perform a survey of desired companies to tour from existing members • Create a top choice list from resulting survey

• Work with the specific plant management to create an annual or bi-annual plan for the

company

Create a list of companies that allow tours • Work with management to create a tour schedule at least 3 months in advance

List these companies in the “What is in it for me” for new members

With the company tour list and members list work with sponsors • Targeted marketing for products and services

• Sponsor to add new members from the company to SME

• Sponsor food

Page 11: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

List of all possible seminars, workshop

and technical activities

Get a contact list of companies with new products that shall be launched targeting manufacturing engineers

ex: Solid Works, Pro E, AutoCAD

Perform a quick survey to determines specific topics of interest for

Determine free seminars/workshops that

can be organized for target audience

external agency.

Have the requested

members confirm (get a fee

for confirmation which will

then be repaid on attending)

Co-ordinate event and

improve brand image

Page 13: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

Brainstorm and create a list of events that SME can support that

aligns with our core and brand image.

Prioritize and select events based on balance triangle

Work with the sponsors to pay for the event/banners/food or

donate money • Most companies have a budget for community involvement which we can

channel through us for such activities.

• Organizations such as Trident United Way have events for children that are

technical- we can partner with them to improve the brand image.

Page 14: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

Increasing the number of members automatically increases the

probability of certification

Increased certification helps us gain members, improved brand

image as well as better visibility within SME

Page 15: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

All events, seminars, workshops, community involvement and

fun events help network.

For dinner/meet up events try roping in sponsors for

banner/food/ sponsor the whole event

Page 16: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

Plan fun events such as golf tournament, bowling

Try roping in sponsors for the whole event/specific days/sections as

desired in order to maximize benefits

Convert fun events as fund risers

Page 17: Ch430 best practice strategic planning

• Once the list of events, seminars, workshops and members

are tentatively available create a brochure to be distributed to

sponsors.

• Create levels of sponsors
