COTE D’ORWines from the Côte d’Or are the synthesis of cool, taut northern Chablis and the broader, riper wines of the Mâconnais to the south, and have this tension of freshness set against richness. This lovely inherent balance, and extended barrel maturation, produce exquisite wines of great finesse and length. Olivier Leflaive has released a new wine at an attractive price from the superb 2012 vintage and we are delighted to have secured an allocation.

OLIVIER LEFLAIVEOlivier Lef aive, Bourgogne Oncle Vincent 2012This is a new impressive wine from the brilliant Olivier Lef aive. Made from old vineyards classed as Bourgogne below those of Puligny, this has true Côte d’Or pedigree. Lovely f oral wine, barrel fermented to contribute some richness, with an impressive fresh f nish. Now to 2018. 13% ref WB-BU56611 £16 bottle £192 dozen

The Society’s Chablis Full, yet fresh and mineral Chablis of impressive quality. Matured for ten months on its lees in tank. 12.5% ref WB-BU48301 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons, Jean-Marc Brocard 2011 A benchmark premier cru Chablis from the excellent Brocard stable. Now to 2016. 12.5% ref WB-BU53781 £16 bottle £192 dozen

Jean-Marc Brocard, Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2011Fine, racy premier cru, stylistically similar to grand cru Les Clos, matured in foudres to open up the wine. The epitome of Chablis and the chardonnay grape at its most pure, it is taut and linear with a great length of f avour. Now to 2017. 12.5% ref WB-BU54431 £19 bottle £228 dozen

Jean-Marc Brocard, Chablis Premier Cru Butteaux 2012Ripe and structured Chablis given a long maturation on lees in 50% tank and 50% old wooden foudre to mature the f avour and open up the structure without contributing any oak aroma or f avour. Now to 2019. 13% ref WB-BU56701 £22 bottle £264 dozen

JEAN-MARC & JULIEN BROCARDWhile he awaits the outcome of a legal argument over the succession of the Billaud-Simon domaine, Samuel Billaud has set up as a négociant and is making lovely wines. Brocard are converting all their vines to the biodynamic regime. They used to mature all their wines in stainless steel but have been working hard on discovering the best maturation process for each wine. The Society’s and the Sainte Claire Chablis get 10–11 months on their lees in stainless-steel tanks and are impressive wines for the money. Brocard are also trialling some concrete ‘eggs’ but they are not wholly convinced. However, 50hl foudres are allowing enough oxygen in to develop the wines without imparting any trace of oak. Montée de Tonnerre, Butteaux and Vaulorent have been aged wholly or partly in foudres and are very successful.

BEST WHITEBURGUNDY BUYS

Now is a great time to enjoy white Burgundy because we have been truly spoilt by an impressive series of high-quality vintages. 2011 is a lovely year with forward, inviting fruit and an attractive freshness. 2008, 2010 and 2012 are all superb vintages from quite low-yielding, cool years. We feature here a lovely mix of fresh mineral Chablis, richer softer Mâcons and a very elegant wine from the Côte d’Or. To aid selection I have chosen three mixed cases that give a good overview of the delicious wines now available.

GROWER FIRST AND FOREMOST

The grower is all important in Burgundy, which is why we have organised the wines in this offer by region and then by grower. In this complex part of the world, it’s more often the philosophy and character of the grower/winemaker that dictates the style of the wine rather than the particular appellation or quality designation. I travel to Burgundy regularly to seek out the best growers and to ensure good allocations for Society members. To find out more, read my How to Buy Burgundy guide at thewinesociety.com/howtobuy

MÂCONNAISThe best domaines are producing wonderful wines. Styles vary. Gonon, Saumaize and Château de Rontets produce some of the most elegant wines of the region. Château de Beauregard, Bonhomme and Château de Fuissé harvest ripe but with balancing acidity to maintain freshness, while Talmard, Cordier and Guillemot-Michel harvest fully ripe grapes with a mellow richness.

DOMAINE ANDRÉBONHOMME

Domaine André Bonhomme, Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes 2008 Bonhomme makes f rm, f ne-f avoured wines with unusually serious structure, which mature well. 2008 is an excellent vintage here. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée is made from vines aged between 65 and 95 years of age. 70% is fermented and matured in barrel, 30% in tanks. Now to 2016. 13.5% ref WB-BU51241 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

CHÂTEAU DESRONTETS

Château des Rontets, Pouilly-Fuissé Les Birbettes 2010From a beautifully sited, commanding position looking north over the village of Fuissé. The high-altitude and north-facing vines produce an elegant, racy style of Pouilly-Fuissé. Made from the oldest vines of the property and given an 18-month maturation, this is a very stylish wine. White-peach-scented aroma tinged with honey and broad, rich but f rm palate. Now to 2016. 13.5% ref WB-BU49971 £27 bottle £324 dozen

CHATEAU DE FUISSÉ Château de Fuissé, Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes 2010Powerful yet controlled, this is Château de Fuissé’s top wine from old vines on limestone and clay soils and marvellous in this excellent vintage. Now to 2016. 13.5% ref WB-BU54461 £32 bottle £384 dozen

Domaine Nathalie et Jacques Saumaize, Saint-Véran En Crêches 2012Fresh and f ne Saint-Véran from a vineyard on the broad back of La Roche de Vergisson. Mineral with a lovely refreshing backbone of lemony acidity. Unoaked. Now to 2016. 13% ref WB-BU54451 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

Domaine Nathalie et Jacques Saumaize, Saint-Véran La Vieille Vigne de Crêches 2011 A small oak-fermented cuvée from a parcel of old vines from the Crêches vineyard. A little richer and more honeyed than the unoaked, younger-vine version above. Long, f rm f nish. Now to 2016. 13.5% ref WB- BU54031 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen

Domaine Nathalie et Jacques Saumaize, Pouilly-Fuissé La Roche 2012 Just below Crêches, La Roche is a warmer vineyard producing richer wine but has a seam of freshness to balance the extra weight. Fermented and matured entirely in barrel. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU56531 £17 bottle £204 dozen

Domaine Nathalie et Jacques Saumaize, Pouilly-Fuissé Terroir de Solutré 2012 A new vineyard bought for Nathalie and Jacques’ son Anthony who made the wine. The south-facing vineyard and marnes and éboulis soil (clay, which gives structure and limestone f nesse) produce a rich and creamy Pouilly with good length. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU56541 £18 bottle £216 dozen

Domaine Nathalie et Jacques Saumaize, Pouilly-Fuissé Courtelongs 2012 This is one of the Saumaize best Pouilly-Fuissés. Tight pruning and low yields enable this north-facing vineyard in cool Vergisson to ripen fully and produce a remarkably f rm, concentrated wine with refreshing palate and great length. Now to 2018. 13.5% ref WB-BU56551 £19 bottle £228 dozen

DOMAINE GUILLEMOTMICHEL

Domaine Guillemot-Michel, Viré-Clessé 2011 Guillemot-Michel’s vineyards have f nally been classif ed as Viré-Clessé (after a bit of local politics!). The wine, previously sold as Bourgogne Les Raverettes, remains the same. One of the stars in our range, this opulent unoaked Mâcon is made from biodynamically farmed grapes by a dedicated couple of vignerons. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU54301 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

Domaine Cordier, Mâcon aux Bois d’Allier 2011 Low yields explain the broad, structured palate and rich texture of this excellent Mâcon. It is cleverly fermented in foudres to allow the wine to develop f avour with controlled amounts of oxygen while avoiding domination by oak f avour. Drink this year and next. 13.5% The 2012 follows. ref WB-BU51741 £11.95 bottle £143 dozen

Domaine Cordier, Mâcon Milly Clos du Four 2012From a cool spot, this is a f ne and quite mineral Mâcon fermented in large foudres to avoid overoaking but which still allow some oxygen in to develop the f avours. Impressive. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU56581 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Domaine Cordier, Saint-Véran En Faux 2012Powerful yet fresh, this is a beautifully balanced example of a top Saint-Véran, from a south-facing 1.8ha vineyard in Chasselas. It is better than many producers’ Pouilly-Fuissés. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU56591 £17 bottle £204 dozen

Domaine Cordier, Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Pouilly 2011Lovely Fuissé vineyard bordering Pouilly which skilfully combines the richness of the former with the elegance of the latter. Now to 2016. 13.5% ref WB-BU56571 £25 bottle £300 dozen

DOMAINE GONON Domaine Gonon, Mâcon La Roche Vineuse 2012 From a cool spot producing a wine with pretty baked-apple aromas and a fresh, crisp appetising palate. Now to 2017. 13.5% ref WB-BU54421 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

DOMAINE MALLORY ETBENJAMIN TALMARD

Domaine Mallory et Benjamin Talmard, Mâcon-Villages 2012Lovely round, succulent Mâcon – a superb example of its type and one of members’ favourite white wines. The 2012 is exceptionally good. Unoaked. 13% ref WB-BU54041 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen ‘This beautiful, unoaked chardonnay made it into my top wines pre-Christmas. A super example of a good wine from a lowly appellation, it tastes smooth and curvy, like a pebble from a river, and has a juiciness you don’t always f nd in Mâcon. Comforting stuff.’Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph

Joseph Burrier, Viré-Clessé 2012Joseph Burrier is the negociant arm of Château de Beauregard, also under the auspices of the excellent Frédéric Burrier. From a vineyard planted in 1947, this is a rich, honeyed wine which was picked at an ideal stage of maturity to balance its undoubted power with supporting structure. Now to 2018. 13% ref WB-BU54181 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Pouilly-Fuissé Insarts 2012From the village of Fuissé, the clay soils give a powerful structure to support the rich but f rm fruit. Superb. Now to 2018. 13% ref WB-BU54211 £22 bottle £264 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Pouilly-Fuissé Grand Beauregard 2008This stylish wine, from the best barrels and matured longer in oak to contribute structure, really shows the potential of the region. Better than many Meursaults. Drink this year and next. 13.5% ref WB-BU46351 £37 bottle £444 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Saint-Véran La Roche 2011Impressive south-facing vineyard which ripened its crop well in 2011.

Château de Beauregard, Saint-Véran Le Vernay 2012 The cool Vernay vineyard needs clever management to succeed, which it gets from Frédéric Burrier, and then it produces a bright, tense, bracing wine in a style that is rare in a globally warmed world. Unoaked to avoid blunting its rapier thrust. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU54191 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Saint-Véran La Roche 2011Impressive south-facing vineyard which ripened its crop well in 2011. White-peach aromas and ripe palate which f nishes freshly. 50% matured in tank for freshness and 50% in barrel for richness. Now to 2016. 13% ref WB-BU51261 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen

Château de Beauregard, Saint-Véran En Faux 2012En Faux is positioned at the top of the slope at Chasselas, near the Mont de Pouilly at about 400m, where it is quite cool but much sunnier than Vernay, with a south-westerly orientation. It ripens well but keeps some freshness to counterbalance the maturity. Fermented and matured 50% in tank and 50% in barrel. Now to 2017. 13% ref WB-BU54201 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen
