DescriptionThe Chad Weaver Aviation Scholarship Program will reimburse up to $450.00 to Virginia residents for private pilot flight training. The scholarship will reimburse the cost of a private pilot ground school and/or private pilot flight training at a Virginia flight school. No other expenses will be reimbursed. The program is open to students who began flight training and/or began attending a ground school on or after June 1, 2019. Students must have a current FAA medical. A maximum of 100 scholarships will be awarded, and only one scholarship will be awarded per student.

BackgroundThe Chad Weaver Aviation Scholarship Program is dedicated to a friend and colleague of all those who call airports home. Born in Virginia, Chad was a lifelong lover of aviation who earned his pilot’s license while working as an engineer for an industrial factory in Oklahoma. Chad moved back to Virginia and, after a year working for the Virginia Department of Transportation, became a member of the Airport Services Division of the Virginia Department of Aviation. Over the course of his life, Chad owned several aircraft, but was best known for his small yellow Acro Sport II that was hangered at New Kent County Airport (W96). Chad was also an avid restorer of vintage American cars, an aviation photographer and an alumnus of North Carolina State University (NCSU).

2. Be sure that your flight school fully completes its section of the form.3. Upon selection for the program, you will receive a scholarship agreement. Please sign the agreement and return it to

the Virginia Department of Aviation.

In order to be reimbursed, students must submit:For ground school only –1. a request for reimbursement (copy of approval agreement)2. a copy of the certificate confirming the FAA Private Pilot written examination has been successfully completed

between the time of acceptance into the program and the date of the reimbursement request 3. A receipt for the cost of the ground school. If less than $450.00, the student will be reimbursed for the actual cost of

the ground school; and 4. a Commonwealth of Virginia W-9 form (available on the Virginia Department of Aviation’s website)

For flight training or flight training and ground school training -1. a request for reimbursement (copy of approval agreement)2. a copy of the certificate confirming the FAA Private Pilot written examination has been successfully completed

between the time of acceptance into the program and the date of the reimbursement request (if a private pilot ground school was purchased).

3. a copy of the student’s logbook page showing that private pilot flight training was taken, in a training aircraft, between the time that the applicant was accepted into the program and the date of the reimbursement request.

4. receipts for ground school and/or flight training (at least 1 receipt from the flight school listed), totaling $450.00 or more, dated between the time the applicant was accepted into the program and the date of the reimbursement request; and

5. a Commonwealth of Virginia W-9 form (available on the Virginia Department of Aviation’s website)

Please redact any credit card numbers from receipts submitted.Reimbursement requests must be received by the Virginia Department of Aviation no later than four (4) months from date of approval. Regardless of acceptance date, no requests for reimbursement will be accepted after April 24, 2020.
