people to become “spiritual seekers.” Our congregation is a place where those inner-stirrings are nurtured and where spiritual seekers are welcome.

The second essential element is the capacity to make intelligent choices. One needs to ask questions like “what exactly is optimal spiritual health, and how does one most-effectively develop it?” Dr. Nathan Katz, the second speaker in our series, presented us with an overview of both religious and secular approaches to spirituality. He also presented contemporary research confirming the neurological benefits of practices like prayer and meditation. Scientific and comparativeperspectives can help us make informed choices, giving us the confidence we need to take the next important step.

The third essential element for cultivating optimalspiritual health is having the structure and support necessary to succeed. If ones approach is haphazard and lacking support, even the best intentions will not bear fruit. Because we typically have other demands pulling us in different directions, it helps to havea regular place, scheduled times and supportiverelationships which fitness clubs and congregations can provide.

Dr. Alan Morinis, the third speaker in our spiritualityseries, presented us with an excellent example of a structured curriculum and system of support with the practice of mussar. At the end of this month (beginningMarch 28) Jeff Agron, co-president of The MussarInstitute, will follow up on that program with a three-week introductory class on the subject. (See page 10 for details.) I’m hoping we can incorporate a systematicapproach such as this into what we already offer here at Temple Israel.

RABBI’S MESSAGEGETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

I recently joined a fitness club. It happened after readinga passage in a book by Dr. Alan Morinis. In Climbing Jacob’s Ladder, he recounts a darker period in his life when his commitment to spirituality and social action had been supplanted by ambition, vanity and ego. Inreflecting on how this came about, he made thisobservation:

“Spiritual practice is no different from any other kind of daily exercise -- skip one day, then find an excuse to skip another, and another, and finally your spiritual Stair-Master is just gathering dust in a dark corner of your soul where the light never shines.” (p. 14)

The image of a StairMaster gathering dust made merealize that I had to do more than just want to be healthy. So I joined a fitness club and made a commitment to work out on a regular basis. That was about a month ago. Ask me how it’s going.

Of course, the StairMaster analogy illustrates a more subtle point. Just as our physical health requires a commitment of time, effort and resources, so too does our spiritual health. Good intentions are important, but alone they cannot carry us very far. We must also find the structure and support that can help us succeed. This has led me to think about our congregation as a “fitness club for the soul” because our activities revolve around this one goal: to promote and support optimal spiritual health for progressive-minded Jews.

There are certainly other places that promote and support good spiritual health. Other synagogues and churches may have similar goals. Even secularorganizations, from fitness centers to universities, now include classes in yoga and meditation. But for forward-thinking people who see that we are developing anexceptionally direct and comprehensive approach tooptimal spiritual health, Temple Israel is likely tobecome a central address for this kind of engagement.

To successfully achieve optimal spiritual health, there are four things that are essential. First, as with physicalfitness, there has to be the inner motivation toimprove (or at least maintain) ones current state. Changing your routine and habits can only happen when you decide you are ready for a change. “I Put before You TodayLiving and Dying. Choose Living, So You May Live”

I had anticipated taping four Torah Talks in the style of TED Talks, but, last month delivered a fifth. In March I’ll deliver a sixth.

This one differs from the first five. The first five were talks I wish I had heard before I began my studies. They stretched out the framework of Torah, blessings, prayer, and Kabbalah. This sixth talk I can give only after forty years of experience. It is, in essence, the teaching I gave last Yom Kippur morning, on the Torah reading from that morning which includes Deuteronomy 30:19, usually translated: I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life so you might live, you and your children.

After forty years I realized that isn’t quite what theTorah is saying. Not life and death, rather the life and the death. What is the life? It is the process of living. And, what is the death? It is the process of dying.

We have a choice to make. We can be either living or dying.

The talk will explore the difference between these two processes and ask the question – When does the process of dying begin?

And why is one process a blessing and the other a curse?I can’t imagine we can recapture the intensity of a Yom Kippur morning. There we experienced exposure beforethe Holy One of Blessing. Here the only immediateexposure will be before those of you who come, and the recording camera.

As for those who tune in later on You Tube– there the exposure isn’t immediate, only residual.

I don’t anticipate any additional taped Torah Talks. But, perhaps some way to continue stimulating deep conversation between the generations.

Last Torah Talk we had the fifth and sixth grade students sit in, interspersed among the adult learners, then paired them off to debrief hevurta style (in fellowship) before coming together for questions and responses. That was so successful, we hope to do it again .Ta sh’ma: Come and hear.

I just had the great honor ofparticipating in the Bar Mitzvah of Matthew Harke. It was my role as President to attend the service and to present a gift to Matthew on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

As I was sitting on the Bimah, Mathew’s mother came up to drape a Tallit on her son who was now entering Jewish adulthood. I was surprisedto be so touched by this moment- not so much because of the singular activity, which in itself was touching, but because of what I suddenly perceived to be the significancebehind it. What I was made aware of was how we are all responsible, as the community “elders”, if you will, toembrace all our children in the name of Judaism.Obviously this moment is not easy for me to transmit in words, but it touched me deeply and I began to tear up. I realized that we need to get this right if we are to thrive. Wow- that was the first time this had really resonated with me quite this way. Clearly, we are an extendedfamily committed to one another and to our continuity as a wonderfully special community. We have an enormous responsibility- each one of us.

Although I have certainly been supportive, I have never been one to actively stress just how much we need to touch our children with the lessons of Judaism, probablybecause I, myself, do not have children of my own. Irealized so clearly through watching Matthew up close that that didn’t matter. I am responsible for passing on our traditions in this community of faith to whoever is following behind as is every adult in our “movement”. In a very real sense, it seemed to me at that moment there was no doubt that we are all connected and responsible for one another.

So, I hope you will join me in doing your part, whatever you perceive that to be, to keep our community whole and thriving. We are all needed so that the spiritual strength which I saw that morning in Matthew continues to expand as he now has become my teacher as well. What a gift.

Let’s keep the lessons flowing l’dor vador- from generation to generation.

The Winter Jewish MusicConcert was a tremendoussuccess, attended by anoverflow audience of over 700 people. Below please see a review by Dan Dickinson,music critic for “Artburst,Miami’s Media Burea for the Arts.”

Early in the proceedings at the Fifth Annual WinterJewish Music Concert, Icircled a couple of names who I wanted to highlight in this review, as a way of filtering out some of theperformers. But as the night went on, I realized that strategy wasn’t going to work. Alan Mason, the organizerof the concert, had managed to pack the two-hour show with 20 artists, almost all of them vocalists, and at least half were outstanding, with the remainder still good.

Mason’s goal is to attract an audience simply bypresenting Jewish music “performed at the highest level,” and the packed sanctuary at Temple Israel of Greater Miami — which seats about 700 — testified that his strategy works.

The program included some eclectic touches, such as a magic show with belly dance, beat-boxed chants, and acoustic guitar folk songs, but by far the bulk of the artists were pure vocalists. Most of them are cantors at South Florida synagogues.Mason explained that he lets the performers singwhatever they want, and the result serves as a sort of talent showcase of excellent singing.

The songs embraced a wide range of styles. Most were sung in Hebrew. There were contemporary settings of prayers such “B’rosh Hashana,” “Yismechu,” and

Please enjoy a peek into our latest project. It was a combinationof language exercise and sensory experience, led by Beverly Steinbook.

Beverly explains: First, we made “volcanoes” using baking soda and vinegar. We talked with the kids about things we use vinegar for in our homes and things we use baking soda for. We then helped the kids smell the vinegar and they shared what their opinion of the smell was. They each took a scoop of baking soda and added it to the vinegar and we discussed the reaction.

The next part was to make “volcanoes” using diet coke and mentos. The kids would count the different number of mentos added to the soda and we concluded that more mentos made the soda spray higher.

There are some new and different faces at Religious School these days. The first week back after winterbreak, the Talking Torah joined us. Then, for Tu B’Shevat, a walking, talking, dancing Tree showed up, and, believe it or not, we had to sing “Happy Birthday”to it!! I wonder who will pay us a visit during Passover?I hear it is going to be a wonderful happenin’ day; the younger students will participate in a Seder that was written especially for them, while the older students will enjoy an activity day filled with games, art and cooking. You won’t want to miss it!!

Based on Daniel Goldhagen’s book of the same title, “Worse Than War” is a personal exploration of the natureof genocide, ethnic cleansing, and large-scale massmurder. Documenting Goldhagen’s travels, teachings, discussions, and opinions, the film offers profound insightsinto genocide’s dimensions, causes, and patterns, and the role it plays in politics and human affairs. Goldhagenspeaks with victims, perpetrators, witnesses, as wellas diplomats and historians with the purpose ofunderstanding and explaining the critical features of genocide and how it might be prevented and stopped.

The fourth and final element necessary for spiritualfitness is the most elusive: grace. Some call it “luck” or “good fortune” but in Hebrew we call it “chesed.” When it comes to spiritual growth and development, we know that it is not the product of our effort alone. Coming to understand how grace operates, we stand a better chance of aligning ourselves with it. This will be the focus of our fourth and final segment in ourspirituality series. Rabbi Rami Shapiro’s presentation(March 1-3) on “Amazing Chesed” will be all aboutbecoming more sensitive and responsive to the presence of grace in our lives; a perfect way to bring our spirituality series to a close.

As we begin our preparations for Passover (March 25-April 2) we’ll want to make sure we have an adequatesupply of matzah and other items for our seders. But we’ll also want to take a personal inventory and make sure we have each of the four elements outlined above which are necessary for optimal spiritual health andfitness. With Pesach approaching, when we recount and re-live our people’s exodus from Egypt, now is the time to get in shape -- not just physically but spiritually -- for the journey of a lifetime.

RABBI’S MESSAGE

“V’Shamru,” and a jazz-inflected “V’ahavta.” There was an art song from the Yiddish cabaret tradition by composerMoshe Milner. There was a Hebrew rendition of the “On My Own,” an aria from Les Miserables (“Levadi”). There was Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen. There was Bagels ‘n Box, a witty mash-up of hip-hop beats with cantorial chants. Accompaniment on most songs was ably provided by Alan Mason on piano and Brian Potts on subtle percussion. The audience often joined in on the chorus, and under the sand-colored arches and carved-wood chandeliers of the sanctuary, the whole event offered an inviting, celebratory air.

For this reviewer, having spent very little time insynagogues and with zero understanding of Hebrew or Yiddish, a special pleasure was simply dissecting the different vocal styles. The range was considerable. The rough-edged vigor of baritone Erik Contzius was followedimmediately by the clear, understated soprano of ShiraSilverman Nafshi. The clean cantillation of Aviva Bass preceded the robust vibrato of Michelle AuslanderCohen. I had my own favorites, but the largest ovation (until the closing number) went to tenor David Aaron Katz’s impassioned performance of “V’lirusholayimIrcho,” by New York composer Abraham Ellstein.

A two-hour parade of talent runs the risk of gettingexhausting, but with such high quality and well-organized staging, it never felt that way. Alejandra

Czarny’s moving performance of LeonardCohen’s song “Hallelujah” that closed the concert brought all the onstage talent together to sing the chorus, and as the crowd rose to their feet and joined in the singing, I couldn’t help but think that a follow up concert was in order with a bit more collaboration between the singers: a few vocal trios or small choirs, or even a small orchestra for accompaniment. I suspect that the logistics of organizing a concert like this are already complicated enough, but it’s a good sign when you leave a concert with this many performers thinking of ways to expand it.
