“If you remain silent… help will come from someplace else, but your father’s house shall no longer stand.” ( Megillat Esther)
Once upon a time there was a holy man who prayed three times a day, Sunday through Friday and of course five times on Shabbat. He was very devout and involved in the Temple and he ended his prayers with the same plea to G-d, ―Rabenu Shel Haolam, please let me win the Lottery.‖ Finally, the arch angel Gabriel had heard enough and went to G-d. ―Adonai‖, he says, ―Here is a man who lives Judaism, does Judaism and by all measures is a truly righteous man. Why won’t you let him win the Lottery?‖ ―I would‖, replied G-d, ―But first, he has to buy a ticket.‖ We are at that point in our Temple’s life. We cannot wait for G-d to do miracles with our financial future. We have to make the effort. We have to do the volunteering, we have to do the pleading, we have to step up and make things happen. In the Purim story, Esther is terrified to go before King Ahashuerus. ―If it is the wrong time, he could have me killed‖, she thinks and begins a three day fast. Now, we have to swallow the fears that paralyze our lives, and go, as Esther did and plead for our people, here at Temple, bringing
the gifts that are ours to contribute. Let us remember, Esther was not pretty. Tradition holds she was rather plain. It was her personality, her grace, her modesty, that won over Ahashuerus. Our congregation as a whole has a personality based upon those traits. Let us win over others to the inner beauty that is TBE. I am reminded, in this month of Persian-Jewish culture, of a second heroine who had a unique talent that won over another ruler. Her talent was to tell stories; others had come before her who could sing and dance. At the end of their allotted time they were killed, but through Shaharizad’s unique talent she lived a long and happy life as queen to the Persian Shah. Now each of us is a unique manifestation of G-d’s Creation. No two people are exactly alike. We need to look at ourselves and discover our special talents. Then we need to overcome our fears, whatever they may be, and carry our own personality, our character and our uniqueness into the spiritual palace that is Temple Beth Emet.

TBE ORGANIZATION
Chai Times is going electronic in May. Be sure to complete and return form on Page 12
by April.
Temple Beth Emet is no different than the State of California………………….. I should say, the Temple is in the same state that the State of California is in. What I mean is, we are spending more than we are bringing in. I do not want to alarm you, but I have to tell you how it is. The Temple is in a shortfall every month. We have ongoing finance committee meetings to discuss where we can cut down.
The State of California is going to raise taxes and cut programs. Temple Beth Emet is different from the State in how we are going to solve our budget crisis. We are not raising dues. If you want to make a donation to the Temple, that is a different story. We want to increase membership. That is where each and every one of you comes in. The Temple has a lot to offer. Share your Temple findings with your friends. Invite them to our services. Invite them to religious school. Invite them to the many events that we have; for example Shabbat Across America.
We need more volunteers to help us with our programs. If you have special skills, the Temple wants you. If you can answer the phone for two hours in the afternoon at The Temple, the Temple needs you. If you are an artist and you think you can sell your goods at the Temple for a fundraiser, the Temple needs you. If you are a psychologist and want to help kickoff our Singles program about relationships, the Temple needs you. If you are a handyman and want to help in the maintenance of the Temple, the Temple needs you. If you are a great Jewish cook and want to share your knowledge, the Temple needs you.
The list goes on. There are so many things you can do to help make our Temple be a stronger and viable branch for now and in the future. We are all inclusive. The Temple values your ideas. If you can come to meetings, and bring your ideas, we look forward to it. One Calls are made every Tuesdays. If you cannot make it to a meeting, I still want to hear your ideas.—Shalom, Steve Abrams

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION IN THE BURBANK SCHOOLS Each year, for the past 25 years, Holocaust survivors have come to Burbank to speak to middle and high school students about their experiences before, during and after World War II. I have been coordinating this program with the help of a small committee and the Burbank Unified School District. The school programs take place in March and April over a two-week period. I am asking for volunteers to work with me and my committee to help schedule the speakers and attend some of the school assemblies. It is a most rewarding and moving experience to be with the students as the Holocaust survi-vors talk about their lives and answer questions. If you are interested in becoming part of this inspiring and worthwhile program, please call me at 818-842-3935 and I will give you more details. -Sylvia Sutton
TBE house of WORSHIP
We all do something that gives us inner joy; we must, for the sake of the Temple, make it a joy for everyone. I, for one, have not played my guitar in several years, but I would be willing to practice for however long is necessary to perform in a TBE Talent Show. Many of my fellow congregants like to sing, some like to dance, I know of a congregant who can actually ride a unicycle. In the non-performance categories, there are members who are very computer literate, photography talented or wood workingly creative. Please, creative people come forward and help us. If you do not, our help will come from someplace else and then we will have to pay. If we keep having to pay out, soon there may be a time without TBE. I do not want that to happen, as we serve a unique purpose in the Jewish Life of Burbank, California. I want us all to give of ourselves to save our community.
In this month of Adar 2, when we are commanded to wear masks at the Megillah reading, let us take off the masks that inhibit us from doing what we love, and be free to be who we are. Then we will save the Temple through our actions and become as, Mordehai and Esther were, ―heroes‖ of our people. - B’ahava, Rabbi Mark
TBE house of study
Purim "lots", is a festival that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people living throughout the ancient Persian Empire from a plot by Haman the Agagite to annihilate them, as recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). According to the story, Haman cast lots to determine the day upon which to kill the Jews.
According to the Book of Esther, Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus, planned to kill the Jews, but his plans were foiled by Esther, Ahasuerus's queen. Mordecai, a palace official, cousin and foster parent of Esther, subsequently replaced Haman. The Jews were delivered from being the victims of an evil decree against them and were instead allowed by the King to destroy their enemies, and the day after the battle was designated as a day of feasting and rejoicing.
Temple Beth Emet will celebrate Purim this year with three fantastic events. The first event will be on Friday, March 11at 7:30 PM at the musically-historical Shabbat Service featuring Persian music and hosted by the Men’s Club. The second event will be reading the Megillah in several languages on Saturday, March 19 at 7:30 PM, followed by Oneg in the Persian Palace. The third event, a Purim Carnival, including Megillah Reading and Costume March, and
Silent Auction, will take place on Sunday, March 20 during Religious School from 9:00 AM-12 noon. Please wear masks and costumes and bring a Purim gragger, also called "ra'ashan" (noisemaker), used when Haman's name is mentioned during the reading of the Megillah, as tradition dictates, to blot out the name of evil. Triangular pastries called Hamantaschen ("Haman's pockets") or Oznei Haman ("Haman's ears") will be served.
Please see back of enclosed flyer to enjoy an educational Passover Crossword Puzzle. Answers provided in April.

Enrich your life. There are two Havurahs here at Temple Beth Emet and a third one being formed: Havurah Shachar, which consists mainly of religious school parents, and Simcha/L’Chaim Havurah. These Havurahs participate together in synagogue life, share sim-chas or even sorrows, but support one another throughout. They are close-knit groups within our temple family.
Havurah Simcha/L’Chaim met at the Temple in February for an evening of games, food and lot of laughs.
You can join an existing group or form a new one. You’ll be happy you did. For information, call Ruth Glick at (818)780-9134.
Sisterhood Sidelines…………...Good News! Sisterhood will, once again, be putting on a Passover Seder with a women’s theme. It will be our 8th Annual Women’s Seder. There is no charge for this event but reservations are a must as we need to know how many to plan for. Call Leona Zollman at 818-761-3931 for more information and to make your reservations.
