And on behalf of my family, we are so grateful. Since my Dad died, the outpouring of love and support from our KKBE community has lifted us up. You called. You texted. You wrote cards and letters. You came to the Shiva we held in our home. You gave tzedakah. You offered words of friendship and support. Each is a mitzvah and each has meant so much to us. It can seem hard to know exactly what to do for someone when a loved one dies. Fortunately, our tradition offers several ways to show support for family and friends in mourning. Tradition teaches that pain shared is pain diminished. So, by helping me and my family in our time of need, you helped diminish our pain. For that we are grateful. Ive sent several hand-written thank-you notes (remember those?) to many people who sent a donation to KKBE following my Dads service. Did I miss anyone? Please, tell me! Our office team has been so good about giving me regular updates. And Im doing my best to follow up with everyone. But Im only human, so sometimes a gentle nudge helps me fill in where I may have missed. Nevertheless, please know that my family and I are still talking about the many nice things people in KKBE and the larger community have done to show their support. Even my kids are talking about your kindness. While we miss my Dad (their Grandpa), we have taken this opportunity to teach them about life and death and Jewish customs and traditions related to mourning and loss. They asked thoughtful questions that I was happy to answer and by the time we were all together for my Dads service, they were prepared for the things theyd see and hear and felt comfortable asking questions and talking about what happened. I m so glad I opened that door for them and know that theyll be better prepared when the topic comes up again. So, if youve heard it enough or are still waiting, once again, Todah Rabbah – Thank you very muchfor doing a mitzvah, being there for us, and all you do to build the KKBE community. President’s Message Naomi Gorstein

On Thursday, January 24th, there was a very special gathering to honor our Life and Legacy members. At the Simons Recital Hall, (thanks to KKBE board member and Jewish Community Liaison at CofC, Mark Swick) this performance was created for the entire Jewish Community. Shiv'im Panim: A Celebration of the Many Faces of Jewish LIFE & LEGACY, was curated by a collaboration with The In(Heir)itance Project. They helped explore the various stories of those in our community and produced a platform where Legacy members could share their connection to Judaism; their memories, their dreams for the future, and why they felt it was so important for them to leave a legacy gift. These stories were powerful. We heard from Eileen Chepenik, the new President of Federation, who showed us her great grandmother’s silver candlesticks which were the only thing she was able to take with her when she came to the United States. She told us how important it was for her to pass on these memories to her children and grand-children for the future. We heard from Brandon Fish, who took care of his grandparents until they passed away. Through this experience he was able to rediscover his connection to Judaism. He told us how important Jewish Family Services was in supporting his family during this difficult time. And from KKBE, we heard from Stephanie Zweben, a member for only two years, sharing how important this community is to her and how KKBE has become her home. And we heard from our own TR Williams how he had left his Jewish roots behind him but found renewal in his faith through his wife, Paige, as she embarked on her journey to become a Jew. There were many more stories of events that impacted both hearts and souls in connection with their Jewish identities. And although the stories were all different, each of them told us how important it was to leave a legacy gift for future generations. With a legacy gift, the seeds are planted, ensuring that our children’s children will have a Jewish future. Thanks to Judi Corsaro and Rebecca Engel for their vision and support as we continue to build our Life and Legacy program. I ask you to consider making a Legacy gift to KKBE. These are the gifts that will have profound impact for our shared Jewish future. If you have any questions about the Life and Legacy program, please contact Amy Davis, Stephanie Zweben or me. “I found a fruitful world, because my ancestors planted it for me. Likewise, I am planting for future genera-tions.” –Talmud, Taanit 23a L’Shalom,

Naomi

KKBE Sisterhood, WRJ Sarah Blum & Diane Tichi

On January 7th about 20 women from KKBE and Hadassah joined together to celebrate Rosh Chodesh Sh'vat. Sharon Kahn wrote a beautiful service read by everyone. Mindy Shanfeld and Sharon prepared the fruit and nuts which were arranged on trays passed around for each part of the service. The seven species of Israel are wheat, barley, olives, pomegranates, nuts, grapes and figs. Mindy decorated the three long tables arranged in a u-shape with Camellias and greenery which made the room look festive for this special occasion. Sharon Kahn taught and led us in dances. Our program chair, Sheila Shear, played the keyboard and her music added to the joy of our dancing and gathering. We learned about honoring the birthday of the trees, and our connection to nature. Thank you to Sharon Kahn, Mindy Shanfeld, Sheila Shear, and Sharon Hox for sharing their knowledge and arranging this special program. On February 12 at 7 P.M. Julian Wiles, of the Dock Street Theater will be our guest at this YES Fund event. The WRJ YES Fund supports Youth, Education, and Special Projects. You will learn more about why we support this special fund and how you can help. You can make your $18.00 donation in honor of someone with a card to be filled out when you arrive. Please RSVP with your check made out to KKBE Sisterhood and send it to our treasurer Bonnie Silverberg, 7016 Windmill Creek Road, Charleston, SC 29414. You may also confirm your reservation by using the Sisterhood Pay Pal account at https://www.kkbe.org/sisterhood. Mr. Wiles is the founder and Producing Artistic Director of the Dock Street Theater. Director, designer, and playwright, Julian Wiles founded Charleston Stage, Charleston's resident professional theater company, in 1978. He will share with us stories about his plays, both the ones that he has written, adapted and produced over the past 38 years. We will have an opportunity to ask questions following his talk. Please enjoy delicious desserts, coffee and tea. Please come and bring your friends to this special event. We look forward to seeing you! We have just recently donated money in honor of one of our security guards, Shylah Murray. She is the President of the FOP. The money is earmarked for the Cops and Kids Program. Chosen Treasures is our number one fundraiser. To date the gift shop has presented the Sisterhood with a $15,000.00 check which will fund our donations to the Temple, Religious School, and other worthy local and worldwide community charities. As you know, Chosen Treasures is conveniently located in the Temple with 600 square feet of outstanding Judaica and giftware items. Valentine's Day will be here soon. Come check out our impressive collection of jewelry and other items that would be a perfect gift for this holiday. We are always looking for new volunteers. Please consider donating one morning or afternoon a week. You will meet some amazing people from all over the world. We also need subs who are willing to come in on an as-needed basis. Please email Heide Klein at [email protected] or Bev Gutmann at the gift shop at [email protected] and some one will be in touch with you. KKBE Youth Melanie Archer The best part of my job is getting a chance to celebrate the milestones of our KKBE children. Those milestones can happen in the classroom, in the community, on the Bimah, on a stage, right here at KKBE or in Charleston, or somewhere far away. It warms my heart to “high-five” a first-grader that has shared they had a great day using their “listening ears” just as it does to learn one of our seniors has been accepted into their dream school for college. I am filled with pride every single time I witness a child become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and I jump for joy when I hear thoughtful discussions in classrooms. I feel so lucky to share in all the many accomplishments of our amazing kids. I am thrilled to announce our CHARLEY Board was honored in front of the entire NFTY SAR region for their efforts in creating a spectacular High Holy Day service for their peers. Kudos to Mary McElveen, CHARLEY’s Ritual and Cultural Vice President and the entire board: Cady Haller, Ellie Ziff, Ashlyn Kievit, David Fahrer, for your hard work and dedication. Congratulations on a well-deserved recognition by our region. More opportunities are underway for our students and parents. I have been working with Shai Bibas, the Charleston Jewish Federation’s community Shaliach (emissary) on ways to strengthen our community’s connection with Israel. Shai has graciously offered to teach a three-part series of lessons to our seventh-grade class to offer a first-hand account of some of their curriculum topics. Shai will be covering: the establishment of the state of Israel, comparison discussion between Israeli and American life (holiday observances, daily life, geography, etc.), and a science and technology session. In addition, Shai will offer a virtual tour of Israel for parents and students. The virtual tours will be offered in April. Reservations will be required as space is limited. Look for details on the virtual tour programs coming soon. Please join us on Saturday, March 2nd for a special Shabbat morning with an all-school service and staff appreciation. Our staff and students have been working hard this year, and we look forward to sharing some of what the children have learned with the Congregation. Finally, the Religious School will be participating in the Miss Chocolate Passover Candy fundraiser again this year. Products can be ordered from individual students and online. Details for ordering will be coming later this month. Thank you in advance for your support. L’shalom, Melanie

Thursday, February 7th at 7 pm: “TO TILL AND TO TEND:” A JEWISH RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE Dr. Stewart Weinberg and Rabbi Greg Kanter Judaism has always understood the natural world to be a sacred gift, and our tending to the earth a sacred partnership. In this session, Rabbi Kanter will share texts that highlight our responsibilities and Dr. Stewart Weinberg will guide us to understand more fully the environmental crisis we currently face and how, together, we can solve it. Gain the skills and knowledge to shape public opinion, influence policy, and inspire our community to act at this critical time. Dr. Weinberg is the Climate lead for South Carolina for Organizing for Action, and a member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps.

________________________________________________________________________________ Sunday, February 10th at 3 pm WHAT DO KKBE AND ZION PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HAVE IN COMMON? THOSE THAT BUILT THEM! Dr. Barry Stiefel and Dr. Nathaniel Walker Come join a discussion about the builder David Lopez and the enslaved craftsmen who enabled him to leave behind a great legacy of religious architecture in Charleston. This legacy reveals shared history between Jews and Christians in Charleston and three places of worship - KKBE, Second Presbyterian, and Zion Presbyterian Church (now Zion-Olivet Church). Participants are invited to join a complimentary tour of KKBE’s historic sanctuary and museum at 2:15 pm. Dr. Barry L. Stiefel is Associate Professor of Historic Preservation and Community Planning, Urban Studies Programs at the College of Charleston and Dr. Nathaniel R. Walker is Assistant Professor of Architectural History at the College of Charleston. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thursday, February 21st at 7 pm: THE INSPIRATIONAL LIFE AND LOCAL LEGACY OF JULIUS ROSENWALD Rabbi Stephanie Alexander and Dr. Alan Nussbaum Julius Rosenwald was one of the preeminent philanthropists of the early 20th century, in any religious tradition. Fueled by deep pride in his Jewish identity and guided by the teachings and work of Reform Rabbi Emil Hirsch at Chicago Sinai congregation, Rosenwald remains an especially inspirational and compelling figure for the Jewish community throughout the generations. In this session, Rabbi Alexander will share background on Rosenwald’s approach to philanthropy and his particular emphasis on supporting the African American community. Dr. Nussbaum will share his photographic efforts to document the Rosenwald School that remains in nearby St. George, SC, as well as the work currently underway to restore the building for new use in the community.

________________________________________________________________________________ Thursday, February 28th at 7 pm: KOSHER FOR PASSOVER Rabbi Moshe Davis Sometime in early spring, the frenzy begins: Where to find Kosher for Passover products in Charleston, SC?! We search grocery store shelves high and low for the familiar boxes and jars from Manischewitz and Streit’s — but what exactly does that all important “Kosher for Passover” designation mean? In this session, Rabbi Moshe Davis, rabbi of BSBI, will share an overview of Passover’s extensive dietary laws: What makes a manufactured product Kosher for Passover? How does one go about koshering one’s kitchen for the holiday? Why do some Jews sell their chametz for the duration of the Pesach, and how do they do it? And good news: Hopefully finding those Passover foods this year will be significantly easier! Rabbi Davis and BSBI are working to make a number of Kosher for Passover products available by pre-order. And Marcie Rosenberg, of Dining In catering, will once again sell prepared foods. Order forms for both will be available at the program.

February 7- March 28 (no class on February 14) at 8 pm ADULT B’NAI MITZVAH Rabbi Stephanie Alexander In these eight weeks, we will learn about the reading and study of Torah in the context of a Shabbat morning service. Topics will include how a Torah scroll is made, cantillation (the system of marks which gives punctuation and melody to the chanting of Torah), the cycle of reading Torah, and how to prepare a D’var Torah (a teaching from the Torah). By the end of eight weeks, students will each be assigned at least 3 verses to chant from Torah, and begin work on a brief D’var Torah, to share with the congregation during the Adult B’nai Mitzvah service to be held on Shavuot, Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 10 am. (Please note: Participation in the Fall 2018 semester is a prerequisite for this class.)

February 7- March 28 (no class on February 14) at 8 pm OPENING THE COVENANT: A JEWISH THEOLOGY OF CHRISTIANITY Dr. Michael S. Kogan Based upon the themes in Dr. Kogan’s book, after which the course is titled, this class will offer an in-depth presentation and analysis of the theologies of Judaism and Christianity. How does each faith view the natures of the Divine and the human, creation, redemption, the freedom or bondage of the human will, sin, repentance, faith, good deeds, the Scriptures, prayer, miracles, orthodoxy vs. progressivism, etc. The course will also examine church and synagogue statements of mutual reconciliation and affirmation issued during the historic Christian-Jewish dialogue of the last half century. This dialogue has revolutionized relations between the two faiths after an estrangement of two thousand years.

It is suggested, but not required, that students purchase Dr. Kogan’s book and read along as the course unfolds. It is available in the Temple gift shop. Dr. Michael Kogan is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at Montclair State University and a member of the KKBE Board of Trustees.

An Update From the Coming Street Cemetery Restoration Committee

The Coming Street Cemetery Restoration Committee is pleased to inform the congregation that the Stanley B. Farbstein Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation and the Stanley B. Farbstein Fund of the Jewish Endowment Foundation together have awarded KKBE $15,000 for the restoration of the Catherine Hinton Lopez Tomb. Within Coming Street Cemetery is a small area separated from the main cemetery by a waist-high wrought-iron gate bearing the name of David Lopez (the Lopez Section). Upon entering this portion of the cemetery, one immediately notices a beautiful Gothic, stone canopy tomb. Interred below this structure is Catherine Hinton Lopez, David Lopez’s wife, and their infant son, Charles Hinton Lopez. This magnificent structure has required an eighteen-month restoration. The Tomb required stabiliza-tion with steel rods, moisture control, which entailed rebuilding the slate roof, deconstruction and re-building of the west tower, new plaster, and repair of the center arch and interior. The Tomb was leaning, and structural engineers had informed us that the tower was in imminent danger of collapse. We are extremely grateful for the support from the Stanley B. Farbstein Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation and the Stanley B. Farbstein Fund of the Jewish Endowment Foundation and these awards are making the completion of the restoration of the Lopez Tomb a reality. West Tower

Yahrzeit Plaques

Yahrzeit is the Jewish tradition of honoring those who have passed away on the anniversary of their death.

One way KKBE offers to permanently honor the memory of your loved ones is with a yahrzeit plaque.

For more information, contact the KKBE Office.
