Oct. 16 – 6:14 p.m.

It was so wonderful to see how many of our members attended or watched on YouTube our Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Yiskor services.

It is unfortunate however how few of our members attended

or viewed our Sukkot services. The HolyDays continue through to Simchat Torah and we need your presence in the Shul for a minyan to support our members who are saying Kaddish.

We did not have a minyan for either day of Sukkot and this

was very disappointing. I recognize that the rise in case numbers of COVID-19 has increased our concerns for venturing out of the safety of our homes, but I would like to remind you that the Shul is taking every precaution of practicing social distancing and safety.

Please support your Shul family and do the honor of

providing them the opportunity so that they may say Kaddish. Shabbat Shalom Chag Sameach

High Holyday Services 5781 Dear Pride of Israel Member, Your membership is important to us. A key fundamental principle of Judaism is that individual health and safety is essential. COVID-19 prevents us from having the traditional High Holyday services that we have enjoyed in the past. As with many congregations, we have had to pivot to ensure that our members can attend High Holyday services. Thus, the Board of Governors, with rabbinical approval, has decided to both live stream 5781-2020 High Holydays services and conduct services with a limited number of attendees present at the Pride of Israel. \ Israel Bonds If you are interested in purchasing an Israel Bond this year, you can purchase them on-line at www.israelbonds.ca or by calling their office at 416 789 3351. In closing, The Pride of Israel’s Board of Governors, Sick Benefit Society and Sisterhood would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family L’Shanah Tovah. May the sound of the shofar bring you and your loved ones good health, happiness, laughter and all the best. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the Synagogue at 416 226 0111 ext. 210 or e-mail [email protected]. Stay Safe,

Steven Bloom, Chairman, Pride of Israel Synagogue

Pride Procedures for Shabbat

The Pride of Israel Synagogue has extended the number of congregants in the sanctuary for Shabbat services to 18 people. The protocols and conditions of attending the service are outlined below. Of note, you MUST call the office and reserve a spot as one of the 18 attendees before coming to Shul on Shabbat. No walk-ins will be granted entry. Measures and Procedures to be followed for Shabbat Services at the Pride of Israel Synagogue The Pride of Israel Synagogue thanks you for your interest in joining our Shabbat Morning Service. We must, however, be mindful of our present circumstances during this pandemic. When we venture from our homes or gather in groups, such as attending Shabbat services, we increase the risk to ourselves and others. To better promote the safety of and establish appropriate procedures for those attending the service, The Pride requires that the measures and procedures set out below be in place. Although these measures and procedures, when followed, can likely reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19 while attending our Synagogue, it is not possible to eliminate the risk entirely, and this must be understood by all those choosing to attend. You should read this in its entirety before contacting the synagogue office. The following measures and procedures apply to all those attending Shabbat Morning Services: 1. Attendance is by reservation only through our synagogue office, and only 18 people plus clergy and our custodian will be permitted to attend. Contact information, including complete name, address, telephone number and e-mail address of those attending, must be provided and made available to the synagogue office when the reservation is made. No walk-ins will be permitted. 2. Anyone who is sick or has signs of illness (including but not limited to fever, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, tiredness, shortness of breath, respiratory problems), or had such symptoms within 48 hours of anticipated arrival, should not come to the Synagogue. They should immediately inform both the office and our Ritual Chair, Eric Sunshine. 3. Do not come to Shul if you have been asked to self-isolate by a health care provider or by Public Health. Let both the synagogue office and our Ritual Chair know immediately if this applies to you. 4. Face masks covering your mouth and nose and/or a face shield must be worn at all times by all in attendance while on synagogue property. You must bring your own mask and/or face shield. Although face shields alone are permitted for those on or at the Bema, face masks must be worn by all while not on or at the Bema. You will not be admitted if you do not have a face mask and wear it. 5. All those attending must sanitize their hands on entry and on exiting the Synagogue, and in general, frequently wash their hands with soap and water or use sanitizer. 6. Social distancing of at least two meters (six feet), and preferably a greater distance, should be maintained at all times and including when seated in the sanctuary.

7. Do not share siddurim or chumashim or any other books with anyone else in attendance. 8. Please ensure that you bring your own tallit as none will be provided. 9. Do not make use of the cloakroom and keep all possessions with you. 10. We encourage you to the extent possible to use your restroom at home before coming to Shul. Only one person is permitted in the shul washrooms at any one time, and only the washrooms off the foyer are to be used. Please use the sanitizer on all surfaces before and after being touched by you. Hands must be sanitized before entry and washed with soap and water or with sanitizer before exiting from the washroom. The bathroom door is to remain open at all times. 11. You must not hug, kiss, shake hands, or physically touch in any way. There is to be no kissing of mezuzot, books, or the Torah. 12. Limit conversations, singing and loud speaking, and leave the Shul immediately after services. 13. When the service is over, the sanctuary should be emptied one person at a time, and as may be directed. 14. Avoid crowding and contact with door handles. 15. Try to avoid touching your face. 16. It is preferable for only one person to handle and read from the Torah each Shabbat. That person will, at the appropriate time in the service, remove the Torah from the Ark, place it on the reading table, read the Torah, do Hagba and Gelila, put the Torah back on the reading table, and be responsible for returning the Torah to the Ark at the appropriate time. If more than one person comes in contact with or reads from the Torah, each person should use sanitizer both before and after handling or reading from the Torah. 17. It is preferable for only one person to open and close the Ark each Shabbat. That person should use sanitizer before opening and after closing the Ark. If more than one person opens and closes the Ark on a Shabbat, each person should use sanitizer both before opening and after closing the Ark. 18. The Ritual Director, Ritual Chair and/or the associate ritual chair shall award Aliyah honours. Those given such honours will, when appropriate, stand and move a short distance toward the aisle closest to them, and from that part of the sanctuary, recite the blessings as required. Where they stand shall at all times be subject to proper social distancing. They can return to their seats, as is the usual practice after the following aliyah has been called, and all blessings completed for that next aliyah. 19. When possible, seats will be designated for use with social distancing in mind. When so designated, only those seats are to be used. All assigned seats are for one person only, except that those living together at home may sit beside each other (i.e. spouses). 20. Seating on the floor of the sanctuary, and not including Clergy and the Custodian, will be limited to 18 congregants. These seats will be made available on Monday at the beginning of each week before the ensuing Shabbat on a first-come basis for our members by contacting the shul office. If need outstrips supply, a waiting list will be kept by the shul office, and those members that could not be accommodated one week can be given the first opportunity to request a seat for the following available Shabbat morning service.

21. Members reciting Kaddish or experiencing life cycle events and who wish an Aliyah can reserve their seat two weeks in advance of the intended Shabbat but must so inform the shul office at that time. 22. Reservations will be closed at 12 noon on Thursday in advance of that Shabbat. Non-members who have called before that date and time for a reservation may then be accommodated. No reservations for that Shabbat will be taken after 12 noon on Thursday before that Shabbat. 23. No food will be provided. Try not to bring food into the sanctuary, although bottled water is permitted. Do not share any food or drink. 24. Efforts have been made to shorten the Shabbat Morning Service, but the service starts at 8:45 a.m. It is a condition of your reservation that you arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. 25. If, by age or a medical condition, you are vulnerable, please check with your doctor before choosing to attend services. 26. As circumstances may arise or further information becomes available, the Opening Shul Committee may make changes to this document as may appear practical or reasonable. 27. You must acknowledge in advance of your attendance for Shabbat Morning Service and, more particularly, at the time of your reservation, your prior examination, understanding, and acceptance of this document and its contents.

to Mount Sinai Cemetery

The Pride of Israel section at Mount Sinai Cemetery is now open for visitations Sundays through Fridays. Please verify the hours on Mount Sinai’s website before visiting. These hours are subject to change. Social distancing rules still apply. As we are updated from both the Province and Mount Sinai Cemetery directly, gatherings must adhere to Provincial rulings. There cannot be more than the permitted number of people at any gravesite at any time. Any more beyond that number, the cemetery workers will ask you to leave. Other cemeteries are also opening. Each has different rules. Please check the websites or call the individual cemeteries directly for more information. Placing monuments at the cemetery can now take place. Check with individual cemeteries for their current position regarding unveilings.
