Forum of Asian Pacific Graphic Arts (FAPGA) formerly known as FAGAT, is the general name for the organization which is being operated by the representative organization of the printing industry who are located in the Asia and Pacific regions.

The object of the Forum of Asia Pacific Graphic Arts is to facilitate the exchange of printing technologies and to promote progress in the printing industry in Asian and Pacific countries, considering to build a co-operative relationship to aim towards internationalization.

The First meeting of the FAGAT was organized during the year 1996 at Japan. The participating countries were Korea, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Japan participated. Then member countries, Korea, Bangkok, China and other countries hosted the remaining yearly meetings. Later, 12th FAGAT meeting was held at Australia during 2011 where India joined as a member in the FAGAT. Suresh from India as the Secretary General and Mr.Kunio Ishibashi as the Treasurer from Japan. The next FAPGA meeting is scheduled at China during 2014.

While 2012 has been a more difficult year for businesses than many envisaged, with uncertainty continued into 2013 but with a new vision and determination and embracing the new technology I hope we could improve the situation.

The printing industry like many other industries is starting to pick up steam in going “Green”. From recycling paper to using soy ink and smart printing companies are starting to realize the benefits of going “Green”.

In fact, the emergence of computer has complemented the printing business and has played a significant role in increasing its status as a clean profession. Today the progressive printers are equipped with the latest computer controlled printing machines and flow lines for binding, while the state of the art digital technologies are being used in pre-press. Leading Printing companies have optimized the use of information technology in each and every area of the Printing business. Printers today are equipped at par with the best print production facilities in the world. The Printing Industry’s quality standards have improved dramatically with immense production capacities.

The new age Mantra for FAGAT is INNOVATE, SUSTAIN & FLOURISH.

Whether it is adding a technological twist to an existing brand or Revamping a product to match today’s sophisticated customer needs or developing a new marketing strategy for sustained growth. Innovation has always been the success mantra of most flourishing global brands.

FAPGA is an endeavor to push the Asian & Pacific print world towards break through strategies and combat challenges in the fact.

R. Suresh, India, Secretary General

Secretary General’s Corner Chairman’s DeskTo be elected as the inaugural Chairman of the Forum of Asian Pacific Graphic Arts (FAPGA) is a special honour and privilege, as it demonstrates that the participating member countries of Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Sri Lanka after many years of collaboration are now committed to formalising the structure and operation of FAPGA.

This process of formalisation is based on agreeing to a Constitution and the registering of FAPGA as a not-for-profit association in a member country. The significance of FAPGA is that it has the opportunity to encourage all Asian Pacific countries to join on a common platform of discussing the future of the printing industry, regardless of whether that country is a developed or developing economy.

It is of interest to note that it was my honour and privilege to be the Chairman of the 7th World Print Congress, which was held in Beijing, China in May, 2001 and that conference theme then was “The Challenges Facing the Printing Industry of the 21st Century in a Knowledge-Driven Society”.

Thirteen years later, the Asian Pacific print community continues to respond to those same challenges with the resolve that it is not whether print will die BUT how print will live, as we consider and plan our future.

This is an important message to build awareness and confidence within ourselves, as well as send a strong message to the Asian Pacific community and governments that we, as a global industry, despite the challenge of change, the print, packaging, design, label, newspaper industry does provide a sustainable service, creates employment and career opportunity, in order to attract quality people into our industry and our print products are the most convenient, economic and environmental communication media available.

Also, regardless of the region or country, whether a developing or a developed economy, no business operates in isolation, as there are a myriad of forces influencing and pressurising costs, prices, product demand and supply. The printing industry is no exception, operating in an environment where costs associated with paper, labour, electricity and capital are impacting on profitability. While changes in new printing technologies, new emerging medias, new ways of conducting business and the purchasing power of the print buyers are all impacting on printing income.

The pace of change in technology and the economic influences both direct and indirect will continue to cause all companies to review, refine and realign their services, production processes and communication with their customers. Also, capacity utilisation, competitive pricing, environmental issues, new alternatives to traditional printing and mobile technology, require innovative consideration, solutions and applications.

I see this both a challenging and exciting period for FAPGA as it creates an environment to engage and exchange information on print, communication and other media with our neighboring countries and I encourage all countries in the Asia Pacific region to join and share this experience.

FAPGA OBJECTIVES

APoLogy:

l Apology was received from Mr Prasit Klongnguluerm, President, Federation of Thai Printing Industries, Thailand.

AUSTRALIAN PRINT INDUSTRYThe Australian printing industry employs over 35,000 people directlyand more than 110,000 people indirectly in over 6,000 businesses.

If all theprint sectors were combined together that are linked directly and indirectly to the products and services produced by the broaderAustralian print industry, it is responsible for:

• supporting and generating almost $56 billion in revenue,

• contributes more than $18 billion to the Australian economy by way of gross value added,

• provides jobs for more than 184,000 Australians across more than 26,000 businessesand

• pays more than $11 billion in wages and salaries.

The Print Industry is the 4th largest manufacturing sector in Australia and serves all parts of the economy, including federal, state and local government, financial services, retailing, distribution, travel and tourism and manufacturing.

The majority of print operations are based in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria in direct proportion to state populations.

But even those firms that enjoy a strong market position and a

good balance sheet, remain concerned about margin erosion. Successful businesses retain large client databases, excellent client relationships, and niche expertise.

Nonetheless there remains a cohort of businesses that have failed to adapt to the changing needs of the market – and are inevitably left behind. For these business owners, the focus must be on minimising losses or, in more serious cases, exiting the industry before there is personal financial damage.

Technological change represents both a major challenge and an opportunity for the Australian print manufacturing sector.

A new breed of print and print-related entrepreneurs has entered the market, using new technologies and processes to gain market share or differentiation through superior material and media selection.

With reduced demand for only ‘ink on paper’ services, print businesses nowfind themselves fighting a war on two fronts by resourcing digital initiatives whilst preserving revenue and margins in their traditional print base.

The new print environment demands a transformation of business model and an improved understanding of the business

models that will work in a digital economy. Australian businesses arenow thinking strategically about the change needed, through greater levels of innovation and entrepreneurialism.

Unfortunately, the high Australian dollar is squeezing the industry as manufacturing and associated print work goes offshore but benefit from competitive prices for imported paper. New production processes are replacing traditional skillsets, and more productive equipment exacerbates the oversupply of print capacity.

Severe margin erosion is causing the collapse of printing companies –large and small –throughout Australia for a variety of reasons, predominately being unable to change, capacity utilisation or not willing to invest in new equipment.

Like many Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), business owners in the print sector let themselves get too involved in day-to-day business tasks as opposed to ‘developing the business’ in a strategic, long-term fashion.

The Australian print companiesneed to put a stronger focus on the areas of management, Human Resources, finance, advertising, sales and marketing.

Those companies with a loyal client base, skilled staff and good customer management systems are leverage these strengths by identifying new and innovative services that are in demand with delivery across multiple digital technologies.

Challenges impacting Australian Print companies

Disintermediation: Printers are being left out of the supply chain. Consumers now have access to cheap digital technologies, from e-mail to high-resolution desktop printers, to digital readers.

High Australian dollar: The high dollar is making offshore print services more attractive.

oversupply: Print businesses are investing in new plant and equipment, predominantly digital but improved production capacity has exacerbated industry oversupply.

Skills lag: The digital environment requires new skills such as online and mobile advertising, marketing and branding as well as new internal systems and processes.

Credit access difficulties: The failure of several large Australian sheet-fed businesses has had the knock on effect of reducing the availability of working capital in the industry. Paper merchants have tightened their credit terms and no longer act as the ‘default bankers’ for printers. Bank lending to this sector has also tightened.

Human resources and succession planning: Small, family-owned businesses frequently lack Human Resource expertise. Many business owners also lack the high level skills needed to devise and implement business transformation.

Industry consolidation: When stronger companies acquire weakened competitors or enter new sales territories, the competition can in fact intensify in those markets.

While there are many challenges for the Australian print industry, there is significant optimism for those companies that can ‘weather the storm’. Print will remain an important communication vehicle in a digital economy particularly for advertising, education and entertainment and the Australian printing industry is well down the road of change to take advantage of this.

JGAS (Japan Graphic Arts Show) 2013

JGAS2013, organized by Japan Graphic Arts Suppliers Committee (JGASC), was held for 4 days from October 2nd to 5th at the Tokyo Big Sight. JGASC organizes IGAS and JGAS every two years alternately. JGAS 2013 is an international exhibition targeting Japanese and Asian markets, and was the fourth time to be held.

The general theme for the exhibition was “Print +α A New Challenge for the Print Media”. The printing industry is surrounded by difficult economic conditions and is facing drastic environmental changes brought by innovations in IT technologies and emergence of

electronic media. This general theme was chosen as we are being challenged by the need to create “+α” (something extra), in other words, create new added value which is free from conventional frameworks.

Main events were : “+Session”, “+Tour”, “+Park”, and “+Live Studio”.

“+Session” held panel discussions and seminars related direct to business. “+Tour” was conduct tours of the highlight areas of the exhibition. “+Park”, zones with various themes, and “Live Studio”, a special space from where various information was broadcasted, were also created.

The number of attendees was 31,237 in 4 days and attendance for most of seminars was very high and successful.
