Chairman’s message
It is with great pleasure that I greet you this month. As summer draws closer we, as a
community, look forward to our annual Festival of Saint Andrew which takes on the 30th
of November. It promises to be a day filled with fun, family and festivities.
This year’s attractions include a Mobile Zoo which hosts many animals and hopefully, if
born on schedule, a lion cub. We will also feature a children’s play area which will in-
clude jumping castles, clown performances as well as face-painting.
Also on offer will be an array of delicacies made from the hard-working ladies of our
community. These include ‘Koupes’, ‘Loukoumades’, ‘Daktila’, ‘Mahalepi’ and ‘Revani’
to name a few. We look forward to welcoming you and your families to share our patron
saint’s name-day festivities. If anyone is interested in assisting with any aspect of the
fete; please feel free to contact any member of the committee.
In the month of October we also honour the people of Greece as
we remember the courageous stand that they took against Mus-
solini; and in turn Hitler when they, as a united nation, shouted
“OXI”; thus refusing to allow Italian soldiers to occupy Greece.
This sacrifice marked Greece’s entry into World War II.
We would also like to welcome all our new Facebook “friends”.
Our Facebook page, as well as our new website
(www.westrandhellenic.co.za), have received numerous compli-
ments and we thank Peter Mammous for his efforts in this re-
gard.
Wishing you all a wonderful month ahead.
Tony Antoniades

Why has The Church changed the Sabbath from a Saturday to a Sun-
day?
The Saturday Sabbath is appropriate to the Old Testament. In the New Tes-tament-which celebrates the resur-rection of Christ on the 1st day of the week-the central experience of our faith (as Christians) is commemorated every Sunday of the year.
We find the fulfilment to that which has revealed in the Old Testament. We are under no obligation to follow the Saturday Sabbath than we are to follow Old Testament dietary re-strictions-upon which today’s Kosher Laws are derived-or practiced cir-cumcision as a sign of our covenant with God.
What happens when we die?
At death man's body goes to the earth from which it was taken, and the soul, being immortal, goes to God, who gave it. The souls of men, being con-scious and exercising all their facul-ties immediately after death, are judged by God. This judgment follow-ing man's death we call the Particular Judgment. The final reward of men, however, we believe will take place at the time of the General Judgment. During the time between the Particu-lar and the General Judgment, which is called the Intermediate State, the souls of men have foretaste of their blessing or punishment.
Who comprises the church and where do priests fit in?
The Church is the holy institution founded by our Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of people, bearing his holy sanction and authority, and composed of people having one and the same faith, and partaking of the same sacraments. It is divided into the clergy and the laity. The cler-gy trace their descent by uninterrupted succes-sion from the Apostles and through them from our Lord Jesus Christ. The Church is ONE be-cause our Lord Jesus Christ founded not many, but only one Church; HOLY because her aim, the sanctification and salvation of her members through the sacraments, is holy; CATHOLIC be-cause she is above local limitations; and APOS-TOLIC because she was "built upon the founda-tion of the Apostles, Jesus Christ Himself being the cornerstone" (Eph. 2:20). The Head of the Church is our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Is believing in Jesus is enough to get me into Heaven?
Orthodox Christianity teaches that belief in Je-sus must be combined with putting that belief into action—feeding the hungry, ministering to others, etc. Both essential. We read in the epis-tles: “Faith without works is dead.” One can in-deed “believe” in Christ and yet lead a life that betrays that belief. Hence belief alone is not suf-ficient. “Not all who say ‘Lord, Lord’ will have a place in my Kingdom.

In October 1940, Europe was being oppressed by Nazi Germany. Poland, the Low Countries and France had already fallen and Britain was fighting the Axis powers of Germany and Italy alone. At that time the Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, had massed an Italian army in occupied Albania directed at Greece. In the early hours of October 28, 1940 Mussolini issued an ultimatum to the Greek leader Ioannis Metaxas to surrender, in effect, by allowing Italian troops to occupy Greece. Greece's brave and adamant reply of Oxi! (No!), to Mussolini's capitulation ultimatum echoed throughout the world and gave much needed support to Britain and the forces of freedom. Metaxas' reply marked the beginning of participation of Greece in World War II.

FROM THE KITCHEN
Recipes that will make your family smile
Phyllo Cheese Triangles
“Tiropites” Ingredients
450g Feta cheese
250g (1/2 block) cream cheese
Tea spoon crumbled Bleu cheese
540ml Ricotta cheese
5 heaping tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
4-5 large eggs, lightly beaten
800g phyllo pastry sheets
Unsalted butter, melted
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes
Prepare the Filling: Note: This filling recipe should be enough for two packages of Phyllo.
In a large bowl, using a fork, crumble the Feta cheese into small pea-sized pieces. Add the
remaining cheeses and mix well. Add the eggs and combine with a spoon or spatula until mixture
is loose but not too thin. It should be slightly lumpy.
Unwrap the Phyllo: Carefully remove the Phyllo roll from the plastic sleeve. Using a scissor or sharp knife, cut the
sheets in half to make two stacks of sheets. To prevent drying, cover one stack with wax paper and
a damp paper towel while working with the other.
Folding: Remove a sheet from the stack and place it in front of you vertically. Using a pastry brush, butter
the surface of the sheet taking care not to tear it. Drop a tablespoon of filling in the centre of the
sheet about 5cm up from the bottom edge. Fold the bottom edge up to cover the filling (about
5cm.)
Fold the left edge of the sheet in to the centre, creating a flap of about two inches wide. Similarly,
fold the right edge over the left flap but do not go past the left edge. You should have a strip that is
about 7.5cm wide with the filling tucked in the bottom. Starting with the lower left corner, fold the
corner of the strip over to the right edge to form a triangle. Continue folding up, then over, until
you reach the end of the strip.
To bake, preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Place the triangles on a lightly greased baking sheet and
brush with melted butter. Bake until golden and flaky, about 15 minutes . Allow triangles to cool
