The speakersaid that industry has realized that a strongBusiness-IT alignment is required to addressthe challenges such as Businesses becomingincreasingly complex with frequent changes instrategies and processes due to stiff competition;Mergers & Acquisitions; Introduction of newproducts with reduced time to market; Revisingmarketing practices; and Changing pricingpolicies etc., He added that techniques such asService Oriented Architecture (SOA), ModelDriven Architecture and Business Innovation& Optimization have been proposed as meansto achieve the much needed Business-ITAlignment and opinioned that however, therestill exists some misunderstanding of the conceptof Business-IT alignment and several ITsolutions still fall short of the industry’s visionsin this regard. In this presentation, the speakerprovided an overview of Business-IT alignmentand the ideas with some case study examples. In addition, the speaker also highlighted the toolsand techniques used in the implementation ofSOA which is a key step towards instrumentingbusiness agility. panel discussion for one hour. At the valedictoryfunction, Er. R Ketharnathan of Saradha-RamBuilders delivered the valedictory address.

This program was attended by about 50teachers and students. It received an excellentfeedback from all the participants. Chidambarambeing a rural area was highly suitable for thistype of program as the people over here neededawareness about engineering. The TISPprovided an excellent opportunity to enhancethe level of technological literacy of pre-university students. It provided guidance to pre-university educators on professional developmentareas that students need. The theory sessionsmotivated the students while the hands-ontraining using basic engineering principlesinspired and built an interest on engineering.

A mobile phone was built almost entirelyout of thrown away aluminium cans, plasticbottles and old car tyres. This process is called‘upcycling’. By this process a product ofsuperior value or quality is obtained from inferiorgrade resources. These raw materials are knownas ‘technical nutrients’. Typical recycling begsthe name ‘downcycling’, as the quality of thematerial deteriorates with each life cycle.

E.g. Recycled paper is more fragile thanoriginal paper. A permanent discolouration(yellowish colour) can be found in recycledpaper. Also, on recycled paper, ink blots formextensively, often rendering the paper unusable.

Thus to maintain the quality throughout,

a process called ‘closed loop recycling’ isadopted.

E-waste / e-scrap like discarded computers, monitors and other electronic gadgets aresubjected to e-cycling. These Waste Electricaland Electronic Equipment (WEEE) contain toxicheavy metals such as Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd)and Mercury (Hg) that leach into the eco-system.

Advancement of today’s technology hasrendered devices such as radio and televisionreceivers, etc. obsolete. These items are classifiedas ‘brown goods’. They fall under the categoriesof ‘historic scrap’ or ‘orphan scrap’. Historicscrap alludes to electronics which are outdated, but still in production by their manufacturers.Accordingly ‘orphan scrap’ denotes electronicsout of the market, the manufacturers out ofbusiness altogether.

Those that attempt to recycle theseproducts can claim millions of rupees worth ofCopper (Cu), Gold (Au), Silver (Ag) and other

Cycling valuable materials like Vanadium (V) and such. These recovered minerals are called ‘green gold’as they go a long way to promote recycling.

The above matter goes to implore thatconsumers should embrace the concept of‘precycling’ – that is, they should purchase aconsumer product after evaluating its recyclablepotential. Manufacturers too, should plan aproduct’s life cycle to entertain the possibilityof recycling. Such manufacturers, known as‘extended producers’, offer the option ofreturning the product if dissatisfied.

In an interesting new development, theconcept of recycling is being extended the realmof medicinal biology, specifically in the field ofhuman organ transplants. Recently, in an Illinoishospital, an already transplanted kidney wasbeing ravaged by the disease that had maimedthe original donor of the kidney. Before it wasirrevocably damaged, it was grafted onto a newrecipient without the failure of rejection.

Electric cars are less practical todaybecause huge batteries are required to providethe power for acceleration and because it takesa long time to charge up the batteries. A growingdemand for mobility and energy in emergingregions makes these problems even moresevere. The automotive industry has to find andrealize sustainable solutions for the mobilityand transport systems in the nearby futurewhich will be exposed to even stricterrequirements than those of today.

The major advantage of electric vehicle isregenerative braking and suspension, their abilityto recover energy normally lost during brakingas electricity is restored to the on-board batteryElectrification of both the mobility andtransport system is one possible answer. Newconcepts and new technologies needs to bedeveloped to realize efficient electric vehiclessuited for both individual and public mobilityand for goods distribution in urban areas usingultra capacitors to augment acceleration-powerreduces the required size of the battery andincreases the power to weight ratio of thevehicle. Graphene, the thinnest material in theworld, could be used to improve electric vehiclecharging capacity and reduce the dischargelimitations of low-density batteries currentlybeing used by the automotive industry.Introducing blemishes to grapheme can producea hybrid material that can discharge energysignificantly faster than standard lithiumbatteries. This discovery is ripe forcommercialization, and can make a significantimpact on the development of new batteriesand electrical systems for electric automobilesand portable electronics applications.

The holy grail of electric vehicles is todevelop a lightweight battery that can storeenough energy to complete long journeyswithout the need for engine hybridization. Carmanufacturers have used engineering resourcesto push the boundaries of battery optimizationand the robust nature of graphene may hold theanswer. The next step for the researchers is topair the graphene anode material with a high-power cathode material to construct a fullbattery. The process of making these new

Since anawareness has been created on conservation ofnatural resources and importance is given todevelopment of alternate energy vehicles , moreand more car manufacturers are turning to low-

As capacitors can charge almost instantly, compared to batteries, charge times are greatlyreduced. Ultra capacitors can charge anddischarge almost instantly unlike batteries whichtake a lot of time to charge and are limited byinternal resistance during discharge. Ultracapacitor has many advantages over traditionalelectrochemical batteries like it can completelyabsorb and release a charge at high rates and in avirtually endless cycle with little degradation. This ability, allows an ultra capacitor to recoverall of the energy during hard braking, while abattery would allow the energy to be wasted infrictional braking due to its inability to quicklyharvest energy issue more in the future. BEVsbenefit from the high levels of torque found inelectrical motors as well as smooth gearlessacceleration and deceleration. However, this isoften more than sufficient for urban and citycentre drivers. The objective role is optimal forultra capacitor, which has very good chargingefficiency and can store the energy from brakingto the next acceleration with high power in veryshort time.

cost, energy efficient vehicles..The batteriesmust provide energy and peaks power duringthe transient states. Significant progress insemiconductor technology has facilitated higherswitching frequency of PWM-based voltagesource inverters—the workhorse of the modern-day AC motor drive. Carrier or switchingfrequencies in the range of 10-kHz to 15-kHzare quite common. This significantly contributesto improved controllability of voltage, currentand torque. It also helps in the reduction ofacoustic noise. Environmental issues create ademand for more energy efficient vehicles. However increased demand and correspondingactivities of major OEMs to develop correspondingvehicles can be already observed.

Electric and full electric delivery vehiclesare under development and tested in severalpilot schemes. The primary task of batterymanagement system (BMS) electronics is toquickly and accurately measure each batterycell’s voltage. This requires extracting relativelysmall differential voltages from very highcommon mode voltages. This is accomplishedby placing high-quality, high common-modedifference amplifiers at each cell to providetranslated signals, ready to be digitized by ananalogue-to-digital converter (ADC).
