2019

It’s Not Always Easy to Thank God for January

It’s not always easy to thank God for January…with the ice and snow it

brings, the cold wind that stings your face and maybe even chapped hands

and cold feet. And what about when the snow blower doesn’t work or

your car doesn’t start or the driveway is covered in ice?

January…we much prefer June, don’t we? June…when winter is gone

and the temperature is rising and the shovels are put away. Beautiful

June…

But…there truly is much beauty in January and much to give thanks

for…isn’t there? So although it may not always seem easy, let us thank

God for January…

…for the new life it brings, new opportunities and new starts

…for the warmth of friends and family and this community of

faith

…for the hope it holds and the gifts it brings

Yes, let us thank God for January…let us thank God for being there, al-

ways…even and especially on cold days, in icy struggles, and along wind-

blown paths. Let us thank God for strength given, direction shown and

hope offered.

Thank you, God, for January!

A most blessed and joy-filled January and New Year to each and every one

of you!

Pastor Laura

Our Annual Congregational Meeting will be on

Sunday, February 10, 2019. We will have one

worship service that morning at 9:30 a.m.

followerd by the annual meeting. Mark your

calendars today so you don’t miss this important

meeting and watch for more information coming

soon!

Look for the Light Christmas Program Thanks from Kate

Without the time and talents of many, this program could not come to

life each year. Special thanks to musicians Kathy and Greg Berg, Ann

Lamar-Heide, the Senior Choir, Tom Hagemann, Ethan Bergman, and Owen

Steberl. We also appreciate the help of Lisa Lequia and all of the Sunday

School teachers, Jeri Smith, Jeff and Lisa Neubauer, Chris and Shannon

Porcaro, Chris and Amy Bergman, Joleen Carslon, Pastors Mark and Laura,

Barb Salvo, Dianne and Doug Johnson, Amanda Gaastra, Kai Jensen, Gregg

Albright, Andy Larson, and all the folks who help us set up and tear down.

We are also grateful for the generous folks who make financial contributions

that help pay for things like llamas, batteries, tape, and donkeys! Huge

thanks to Gloria Dobrowski, Barb Maier, The Dry Guys, Chris and Shannon

Porcaro, Lisa and Jeff Neubauer, Bill Johnson, Jill Vander Brug, and Kate

Potter-Barrow. What fun to see your gifts help fill our beautiful sanctuary

with live animals and our beautiful children who together use their charm to

tell us the best story in the world!

Last, thank you to the fabulous and delightful kids of HCLC. It is exquisite

fun to watch you grow from 3 year olds who smack your neighbor with a

candlestick during Silent Night into capable animal handlers and, more

importantly, into poised and dignified narrators and singers. What a joy it

has been to be part of your journey all these years! Know that I’m wildly

proud of you and that I am deeply grateful to work with you every Sunday.

The children had a great time at Santa’s Night Out! A huge thank you to Shannon Porcaro for planning the

evening and preparing everything for it!!! The children had a great time! The night began with many fun crafts

to create and hot dogs and macaroni and cheese for dinner. Then the kids got comfy on sleeping bags, pillows

and beanbag chairs and enjoyed a bag of treats while watching the movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The

evening ended with Patrick BeBow reading The Day Before Jesus and the annual “silly” gift exchange. Hopefully,

parents were able to get some errands and Christmas shopping done!

Thank you to all who came out Christmas Caroling for our homebound members. Everyone agreed

that it was a very meaningful experience and several said that they look forward to caroling every

year! A special thank you to Pastor Laura for our fabulous, festive-glowing Christmas light necklaces!

So much Christmas joy was shared and delicious chili and desserts were enjoyed too.

We hope you will consider joining us next year!!!

Thank you to everyone that brought cookies for the celebration in the Mark Hurn Room after our Christmas

program Look for the Light. We had a great variety of delicious treats!!! If you have shepherd costumes that your

children have outgrown and you are just going to get rid of them, please bring them to church. We store them for

other children to use in coming years.

May the light of Jesus shine in all of your lives this coming year…

Please return your Reverse Advent Calendar boxes to church on Christmas Eve. If you do not plan to attend that

service, please return it at a time that is convenient for you, but please email me at [email protected]

so that I can add your box to the count for Sunday School families that completed the project. Thank you so much!

HAPPY BAPTISM BIRTHDAY to the following children

who were baptized during the month of January:

The Quilting Group will meet on Tuesday,

January 8th and on Tuesday, January 22nd at

1:15 p.m. in the Mark Hurn room to continue

work on the quilts for Lutheran World Relief. No prior

quilting experience is required to become a member of

the group, so why not come give it a try!

News From The Pews

Recently Hospitalized

Bill Fritsch, Lyle Tennis, Dolores Fergus

Deaths

Betty Lui died on Sunday, December 2, 2018.

Please keep her family and friends in your prayers.

For the month of January, the food pantry is asking for these items:

January 6 - cereal, macaroni & cheese

January 13 - cereal, canned pasta

January 20 - pancake mix, syrup

January 27 - pork & beans, chicken noodle soup

Thank you to all of you who continue to share in the ministry of Christ through your food and monetary donations to

the food pantry and to those who volunteer their hours of service. It is truly appreciated!

Because of your generosity we were able to serve 215 families, a total of 724 people, a great Thanksgiving meal. We

gave out 119 turkeys and 96 chickens! For the entire month of November, we served 419 families, a total of 1342

people. We have not served this many people in one month since 2014!

A special thank you to Jo Nissen and the Monday Morning Bible Study. Jo organized the Christmas candy donations

and set things up for Monday Morning Bible Study participants to fill the candy bags. The pantry clients are so

grateful to receive these special treats. Thanks to all who donated and those who put bags together and thank you all

for your continued support.

A “Sound” Opportunity! Have you ever wondered how the sound system in our sanctuary works?

Are you looking for a new volunteer opportunity that requires only one hour per month?

If you answered “yes” to either of the questions above, then the Sound Ministry wants you!!

We are in desperate need for one new volunteer for the late (10:45am) service.

If you are of a “sound” mind, we’ll provide the training!

Please contact Barb Salvo (886-0941 or [email protected]) for more information or to volunteer.

"The Radium Girls" by Kate Moore is the next selection book for discussion on Wed. Jan. 16 at

10:00 in the lounge. This is the true story of a group of women who made history by entering the

work force at the dawn of new scientific era. They learned the skill of painting glow-in-the-dark

numbers on clock faces and aeronautical gauges and paid a stiff price involving the deadly

element radium. Moore tells their incredible story of tragedy and bravery in the face of corporate

greed. The women suffered through radium poisoning and refused to be silenced. This was a dark chapter in

American labor history. All are welcome to join the discussion!

THIRD TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY Philippians 2:5-11 on pages 40-47 will be the basis for our bible study January 15. This is shorter than usual, but Barclay spends seven pages discussing the next seven verses! Best we save those pages for our next get together

in May.

In these verses, Barclay writes about “True Godhead and True Humanity.” He states, “this is the greatest and most moving passage Paul ever wrote about Jesus.” So come on January 15 from 10:00-11:30 in the fellowship lounge

to continue our discussion of Philippians.

Circle of Hope, Cancer Support Group, meets the second Thursday of each month, from

10:00 - 11:30 a.m. The January gathering will be on January 10th in the church lounge. All

are welcome - you do not need to be a church member to come! This group is for cancer

patients and survivors, caretakers, family and friends, to get together to talk. Sometimes no

one else can understand like someone else going through the same sorts of things! Please call

Pat Barlament, 886-2749 with questions and ideas for speakers.

Hanging of the Greens Thanks (and Taking Down the Greens!)

A big thank you to Patrick BeBow, Dave & Darlene Krueger, Cindy Myhre, Jeff Nelson, Judy Nuter,

Barb & Dwight Pedersen, Kerry, Henry and Mae Perkins, and Dale and Denise Stillman who spent a

Friday evening decorating trees and hanging garland in our sanctuary and Welcome Center. It looks

absolutely beautiful! Thank you! If you weren’t able to be there to decorate but would like to help, they will be

taking down the decorations at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 10th! Even if you can only be there part of the

time, your help will be greatly appreciated!

Youth Choir Rehearsals

Starting in January, there will be 2 youth choir rehearsals each week in order to accommodate

everyone's busy schedules. Both practices will take place in the choir room. We’ll meet on

Sundays, right after the first service and on Wednesdays at 5:30, before Wednesday Night Live.

Questions? Contact Kate at 262-498-7593.

2019 Altar Flowers

We are taking reservations for altar flowers for 2019. Each vase of flowers costs $25.00 and

you can pick up the flowers after the second service if you wish. Payment must accompany

your form in order to reserve the date. We have two spots available each Sunday. If the

Sunday you request is not available, we will notify you of available dates. Please do not put

this form in the offering plate. Return it to the church office or put it in Heidi’s mailbox.
