Challenge and Hope in a Year Like No Other

Page 2: Challenge and Hope - Covenant Health

From the President and CEO From the Chairman of the Board

As I look back on 2020, it truly was “a year like no other.” When coronavirus

cases increased in our region, we joined our communities in a roller-coaster

of challenges, from preparing our staff and facilities to care for COVID

patients and their families to helping our own employees, many of whom

faced personal losses and unexpected financial needs.

I want to say a very heartfelt “thank you” to our communities, who lifted our

spirits through prayers, messages of thanks, donations of food and masks,

and much more. Your kindness and generosity continue to inspire us and

remind us of our ongoing mission to improve the quality of life in our region

through better health.

As healthcare providers, we learned a great deal during 2020. We have

continually improved our patient care processes, learned how to care

more effectively for COVID-19 patients, and at the end of the year, we launched a robust plan

for distributing vaccines to our employees and to our communities. We have implemented new

technology such as our “Helen” chat feature and telehealth services to help patients even if they are

unable to leave their homes.

Despite the challenges and difficulties related to COVID-19, in 2020 we announced several exciting

partnerships, joint ventures and plans for the future:

• Covenant Health was named Dollywood’s strategic partner for healthcare. Similar to Covenant

Health, Dollywood is committed to quality. The theme park welcomes about 3 million visitors each

year, and we are honored to collaborate with Dollywood to enhance guests’ experiences through

support of the park’s safety team and other healthcare initiatives.

• We announced a partnership with Acadia Healthcare to build a new inpatient behavioral hospital

in Knoxville to help meet our region’s ongoing need for mental health services.

• We announced a partnership with Encompass Health to renovate and expand the services of the

Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and to build a new

inpatient rehabilitation hospital on the Fort Sanders West campus in west Knoxville.

• We announced plans for a new outpatient facility in south Knoxville that will include urgent care,

an outpatient diagnostic center, primary care services and physical rehabilitation.

• Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System announced plans to build a free-standing emergency

department and outpatient diagnostic center that also will include office space for physicians.

In 2021 we will celebrate Covenant Health’s 25th anniversary, and I am looking forward to this

important observance. As I think about our health system’s past and future, I am most grateful for our

employees and their devotion to our patients, families and communities. In the pages of this report

you will get a glimpse of this unwavering devotion during “an unprecedented year.” As always, we are

honored to serve our Tennessee communities and we thank you for trusting us with your care.

Jim VanderSteeg

As chairman of Covenant Health’s Board of Directors, it is my

pleasure to extend greetings on behalf of my fellow Board members.

I have served on the Covenant Health Board since 2010 and

have had the privilege of being the chairman for the last three

years. During this time, I have visited each of our medical centers

throughout East Tennessee to meet the leadership teams,

physicians and support teams. I left each visit deeply impressed by

their passion for excellence in all that they do, and their dedication

to providing the highest quality of care to the over two million

patients Covenant Health serves annually.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic was a true test of Covenant Health’s

commitment to serving our communities by providing the highest

quality of care under the most challenging circumstances. Our leadership, physicians,

caregivers and support teams rose to this challenge at great personal risk to ensure that

each of our patients received excellent care.

Our Board is made up of a talented group of community leaders and physicians who

donate their time and expertise in service to Covenant Health. I know I speak for all Board

members when I say that we have a profound dedication to the health system’s not-for-

profit mission: improving the quality of life in our communities through better health.

We serve on the Board because we want to be part of an organization that truly makes a

difference in the lives of people in our region.

The Board has a great deal of pride in Covenant Health – its leaders, employees, physicians

and volunteers, and its Pledge of Excellence in all endeavors. Covenant Health is well

recognized for achievements in quality and patient safety, for the integrity of our business

operations, for our financial strength and for reinvesting in facilities and medical resources

in local communities. These achievements have been recognized by Forbes magazine,

which has named Covenant Health to several of its “Best Employer” lists six times. As Board

members we proudly affirm the health system’s commitment to continued excellence in

patient care and to making Covenant Health the first and best choice. It is truly a privilege to

serve our patients and communities.

As 2019 drew to a close, Covenant Health hospitals had much to celebrate. Parkwest Medical Center had just

opened its new Dogwood Tower,

adding operating rooms, establishing

a new surgery entrance and patient

discharge area, and expanding the

footprint of the hospital. Fort Sanders

Regional Medical Center was beginning

a year-long celebration of the hospital’s

100th anniversary and had completed

the first phase of a major project: the

opening of an expanded emergency

department, with construction

scheduled to continue on a new

critical care unit in 2020.

Then came coronavirus. Health

system administrators and clinical

leaders began learning about and

preparing for a possible influx of

COVID-19 patients, and began

establishing procedures to assure

that safe care would continue for all

patients.

In March 2020, Covenant Health

and other Tennessee hospitals

temporarily paused some outpatient

services and elective procedures.

Administrators and clinical caregivers

began meeting regularly, developing

A Year Like No Other

innovative ways to meet the

challenges presented by coronavirus.

When outpatient services and

elective procedures resumed, we

had strict screening procedures

and visitation guidelines in place for

our hospitals, nursing homes and

physician practices.

Because of the pause in outpatient

services and procedures, many

employees’ hours were reduced

for a portion of the year. Covenant

Health leaders recognized a need

for emergency assistance and

established a COVID relief fund

of $2 million for employees facing

unexpected financial needs.

By the end of 2020, the volume

of COVID-19 patients across our

organizations was at an all-time high.

COVID-19 created challenges for

employees in all areas of the health

system, especially front-line workers

delivering patient care in high-risk

The gift of hope arrived just before the holidays in the form of COVID-19 vaccines.Covenant Health helps employees take extra precautions such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) to deliver safe care.

Fort Sanders Regional’s sterile processing department reprocessed N95 masks for safe reuse.

Our communities contributed more than 10,000 masks for patients and visitors during our “10,000 Masks in 10 Days” campaign.

Employees checked temperatures and asked COVID-19 screening questions of everyone who entered our facilities.

settings. Covenant Health’s board of

directors and executive leadership

team acknowledged these challenges

and expressed gratitude through

COVID relief bonuses and additional

paid time off for employees.

The year ended with hope on

the horizon: the arrival of COVID-19

vaccines. By Dec. 31, front-line

employees and medical staff at our

acute-care facilities had opportunities

to receive the vaccine, with distribution

expanding throughout the system and

into our communities in 2021.

While it was a difficult and

challenging year for healthcare

organizations around the world,

including Covenant Health, it also was

a year rich in learning and abundant

blessings. In 2021, Covenant Health

will celebrate 25 years as a health

system. We look forward to that

celebration, and to continuing our

care for the people of Tennessee.

Daunting challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic inspired creative solutions. This year Covenant Health established

several initiatives to make sure our

patients continued to receive safe and

compassionate care.

“Helen” Helps with Medical Appointments, Answers Patients’ Questions

In 2020 Covenant Health launched

“Helen,” a new interactive chat

assistant to help people navigate

COVID-19 medical care without

having to leave home. Helen guides

users through a symptom checker

and advises them on next steps for

care. Helen also connects users with

nurses who can answer specific care

questions and schedule telehealth

appointments with a medical provider.

Users can connect with Helen

at CovenantHealth.com and on all

hospital and medical practice websites

throughout the Covenant Health

system.

Telehealth Grows Rapidly during Pandemic Year

The innovative ability for patients

to “visit” medical providers remotely

via phone or computer expanded

exponentially during 2020, and

telehealth services will continue to

grow in the future.

Telehealth sessions allow the

patient at home to video chat with

a medical provider using a mobile

device or computer. During the virtual

appointment, the provider can assess

the patient, order testing if needed,

and prescribe medications and

treatment.

In addition to telehealth

care, patients can enroll in

MyCovenantHealth, a patient

portal offering secure access to

health information and continuous

communication with providers.

“We’re very excited to offer these

types of digital services,” said Mandy

New Recognition Program for Veteran and Active Military Patients

In November 2020, Covenant

Health initiated a new program to

help identify veterans and active

military members as part of our

hospitals’ admission process.

Clinical social worker

Cindy Winterberger, LMSW,

has coordinated a military

recognition program as part of her

responsibilities at Covenant Hospice,

and was integral in introducing

the military recognition program

throughout Covenant Health.

Winterberger explained, “It creates

a moment for our staff to thank

and honor that person. When a

patient has been identified as

having served, they are offered

a special pin and certificate

thanking them for their service

and sacrifice,” she said.

“The first few weeks of this

initiative proved very meaningful

for our staff who are veterans,”

she added. “I think about all the

lives we are going to impact.

People who need and seek

healthcare may receive a special

moment of thanks, and that

touches my heart. If not for the

brave men and women who have

stood to defend our nation, where

would we be?”

Halford, MD, Covenant Health Senior

Vice President and Chief Medical

Informatics Officer. “In the face

of the coronavirus pandemic, we

worked diligently to create innovative

solutions that allow our patients to

connect with their care team from the

comfort of their homes.”

Innovative Care for Patients and Communities

2020 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

In February 2020, Dollywood officials announced Covenant Health as the “official health system partner of Dollywood.” The partnership

focuses on the organizations’ shared

commitments to excellence, strong

and vibrant communities, guest

services and experiences, and to

improving the quality of life in the

region.

As part of the multi-year

agreement, Covenant Health

will work with the award-winning

theme park on projects including

upgrades to the park’s baby care

facilities, nursing centers and the

well-known Calming Room, as well

as sponsorship of Dollywood’s safety

team. Covenant Health also will offer

health-related activities for guests,

including hand sanitizing stations and

health tips signage throughout the

park. The agreement also extends to

Dollywood’s Splash Country

“Our two organizations have much

in common,” said Jim VanderSteeg,

Covenant Health president and CEO.

“Both are known for excellence ... both

are committed to our local region and

have a long legacy of service to our

communities.

“Covenant Health is the Knoxville

area’s largest employer and Dollywood

is the largest employer in Sevier

County. Both are committed to

improving the overall quality of life

in our region through our respective

programs and services.”

Throughout 2020, Covenant Health and our member organizations have been blessed by supportive and uplifting

acts of kindness from our communities.

We cannot begin to express our thanks

for your support during this challenging

year. It means a great deal to know

that people throughout our region are

thinking of our health system and our

11,000 employees who are dedicated to

providing excellent care for our patients

every day.

To Our Communities – THANK YOU for Your Support

Our hospitals and clinics have been

the recipients of prayers and letters,

food items, mask donations, thank-

you gifts and financial contributions

to our WeCare employee fund

from nearly 250 businesses and

250 individuals throughout East

Tennessee. We are also grateful to

Covenant Health’s board of directors,

physicians and employees for their

gifts and contributions.

You made – and continue to make –

a difference in our hearts. THANK YOU!

Healthcare workers are always heroes - but especially during 2020.

Covenant Health announced several joint ventures and expansion projects in 2020. These projects

will enhance the health system’s

transition from a network of hospitals

to a comprehensive healthcare

delivery system, bringing the most

needed services to our communities:

• In February 2020, Fort Sanders

Regional Medical Center opened

a new emergency department,

doubling capacity and adding

diagnostic and imaging services to

the ED to create faster and more

efficient services for patients and

staff. The project continued in 2020

with phase 2, the construction of a

new and expanded critical care unit,

which opened in first quarter 2021.

• In July 2020, Encompass Health

Corp. (NYSE: EHC) and Covenant

Health announced a joint venture

to own and operate Covenant

Health’s Patricia Neal Rehabilitation

Center at Fort Sanders Regional

Medical Center. The project

includes modernization of the

Center and conversion to a 22-bed

“hospital-in-hospital” structure.

The joint venture also includes a

new 51-bed, free-standing inpatient

rehabilitation hospital to be built

on the Fort Sanders West campus.

Both facilities will serve patients

recovering from debilitating

illnesses and injuries including

strokes and other neurological

disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord

injuries, amputations and complex

orthopedic conditions.

The two joint venture investments

total more than $50 million, and

both projects are expected to be

completed in 2022.

• In August 2020, Covenant Health

and Acadia Healthcare, Inc.

(NASDAQ-ACHC) formed a joint

venture to address the growing need

for behavioral health services in

Knoxville and surrounding counties.

Construction began in late 2020

on a state-of-the-art 90-bed

psychiatric hospital at the corner

of Old Weisgarber Road and Dowell

Springs Blvd. in West Knoxville.

Slated to open in 2021, the new

hospital will have a total capacity of

138 beds to meet projected future

demand for inpatient services.

Treatment will be provided for

adults, seniors and adolescents

who struggle with acute symptoms

of mental health disorders such as

anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder,

posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

and substance use disorders.

“The shortage of resources for

mental health is a national problem

that we also face here in East

Tennessee,” said Jim VanderSteeg,

Covenant Health president and

CEO. “Covenant Health and Acadia

Healthcare intend to substantially

fill that gap by providing treatment

options for patients and increasing

access to much-needed high

quality care.”

• In fall 2020, Covenant Health

announced plans for a $20

million outpatient facility in

south Knoxville. Construction is

anticipated to begin in the first

quarter of 2021.

The proposed facility has more than

36,000 square feet and will include an

urgent care area with extended hours,

a clinic for primary care and other

medical subspecialties, a diagnostic

center with laboratory and imaging

services, and areas for physical

rehabilitation and education.

PHILANTHROPY: goodwill, the love of humankind

No other year has shown us the goodwill of our community like 2020.

Nearly 5,000 individuals, businesses,

foundations and organizations

generously supported Covenant

Health in 2020. Their donations, which

benefit the patients served by our

hospitals and programs, totaled over

$2.6 million. We are truly grateful.

Covenant Health’s Office of

Philanthropy coordinated fundraising

efforts across the health system

through six foundations in 2020:

• Fort Sanders Foundation (serving

the needs of Fort Sanders Regional,

Fort Loudoun, Parkwest, Roane,

and Cumberland medical centers;

Covenant HomeCare/Hospice;

Peninsula, and Patricia Neal

Rehabilitation Center)

• Methodist Medical Center

Foundation

• Morristown-Hamblen Hospital

Foundation

• Thompson Cancer Survival Center

Foundation

• Claiborne Healthcare Foundation

(serving Claiborne Medical Center

and Claiborne County’s health

needs)

• Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation

(serving LeConte Medical Center

and Sevier County’s health needs)

The work of these foundations,

guided by volunteer boards of

directors, is made possible by

community support. Almost $5 million

was distributed by our foundations

in 2020 to support Covenant Health

hospitals and programs.

Your generous donations are

benefiting patients and their families

across our region:

• Covenant Homecare clinicians

provide medical care, medication

management and case

management to individuals at a

new onsite treatment facility at

Knox Area Rescue Ministry (KARM),

preventing hundreds of emergency

room visits and hospitalizations.

This program was supported with

$178,000 of your donations in 2020.

• Almost 200 pulmonary

rehabilitation patients without

insurance coverage or ability to pay

received outpatient therapy in 2020

through support from a Will Rogers

Institute grant.

• More than 3,000 patients and

employees facing unexpected

financial crises received

emergency assistance with

housing, transportation, food,

utilities, medical supplies and

funeral expenses. Covenant

Health employees and physicians

contributed over $670,000 to the

annual WeCare employee giving

campaign to support these needs

and other health system programs.

• Almost $60,000 in contributions

provided patients completing

treatment at Peninsula Hospital

with an adequate supply of

medications to maintain health

until insurance could be arranged

for medication maintenance.

• Nurse navigators at Thompson

Cancer Survival Center provided

21,985 patient counseling sessions

to more than 1,300 patients facing

a cancer diagnosis. Donations fund

the important work of the Center’s

navigators, who guide patients

through financial and insurance

processes, medical questions and

procedures, and the challenges

of daily life during their medical

treatment.

Covenant Health is grateful

for the leadership of our

foundations’ volunteer board

members who share their time,

talent, and wisdom to improve

the health of our communities.

Thank you for your service!

Generous donors, led by Clayton Homes, supported the renovation and modernization of Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center’s independent living apartment, which provides a home-like place for patients and caregivers to practice new skills before leaving the Center.
