Tonight we have another Deb Ball Committee meeting at 7pm in the College Boardroom. This group of parents

and students have been working well behind the scenes in getting things sorted for the Deb Ball 2015. This year’s

event will be at Eastbank in Shepparton on Saturday 31st October. Dance lessons for the 20 sets of debutantes and

their partners will begin here in the Euroa Secondary College Sports Stadium on Monday August 17.

As stated last week, families can expect (this may have even arrived home already) some information arriving

home (or via email) in the very near future in relation to a trial of a student performance average (SPA) tool the

College will be using from this point in time. Information relating to this tool, SPA, will reflect a seamless and

more informative way in which families can obtain feedback on how their student is doing in class in relation to

key performance measures (achievement, productivity, attitude/effort, managing personal learning and

attendance).

This week we have both the English and Maths competitions scheduled - well done to all students taking on the

CHALLENGE in this respect. A reminder also that our College has a student-free day set for this Wednesday

where staff will be taking the opportunity to further develop their skills in accurate assessment of student learning

and demonstrable academic capacity.

The Cool Heads driver safety session set for Shepparton’s Eastbank Centre is also another opportunity available

for our year 12 students to attend with a bus departing the Euroa Secondary College car park at 5:45pm. Students

from year 12 wanting to attend this may register a seat for this bus through our front office (by 11am Tuesday July

28). Of course families may wish to attend this event themselves and are encouraged to do so (the event is free).

Details are as follows: Cool Heads, Wednesday 29 July, 7pm start, Eastbank Centre, 70 Welsford Street,

Shepparton.

A reminder that this Wednesday is a student-free day as the teaching component of our staff team use this time to

further their depth of knowledge regarding student assessments via AusVels ratings as well as spending time on

our SPA (see above) tool.

I welcome your feedback - [email protected]

School Buses

Parents driving their students to school are reminded that students should be dropped off and picked up at the

Campbell Street entrance to the school, near the front gates. NO PARKING or entering the school car park

during bus times. The school bus service is not there to provide transport to get to after-school jobs or sports training etc. Any bus

traveller who needs to make a “one off” request to change buses needs to give Mr. Bott or Mr Watson a note

signed by a parent/guardian on the morning of the day of such a request. Be mindful that the answer may have to

be “no”. There is no room at all on the Avenel, Nagambie & Violet Town Buses.

ENGLISH COMPETITION:

This will run during periods 1/2 on Tuesday July 28th, in the Library. It is a great opportunity for students to

challenge themselves. Those who have entered should go to the Library after Home Group on Tuesday.

Year 11 and 12 News

The year is advancing quickly, and all students are hopefully knuckling down to the second semester of their

work.

The VCAA publication Exam Navigator arrived at school last week, and will be distributed to all students

undertaking a Year 12 exam in October and November during the next couple of weeks. This publication includes

all the pertinent information for exams including the exam timetable, and everything about what students can and

cannot take into each exam. A must read.

Valedictory Celebration News - We had a great roll up to the first 2015 Valedictory Organising Committee

meeting last Thursday evening. Thank you to all those who attended or forwarded an apology. A survey about the

format of the Valedictory evening is being sent home to Year 12 families today. We would appreciate if your

responses are returned to school by this Friday so that we can collate prior to the next meeting which will be at

7pm on Monday 3rd

August.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you need clarification about any of the above.

“Need to Read” Challenge on again!! The Delatite Library network “Need to Read Challenge” is up and running again in 2015. A new initiative in

2014, the Delatite Library Network “Need to Read” Reading Challenge was launched in the last week of Term 2

and is open to all Year 7-10 students 5 schools – Euroa Secondary College, Mansfield Secondary College,

Alexandra Secondary College, Yea High School and Broadford Secondary College.

Students are challenged to read widely during all of Term 3, with the competition finishing at 4pm on Friday, Sept

4th. A reading list has been compiled and for each book read from the list, the student can read a “free choice”

book. Each 2 books read qualify for a raffle ticket in the Delatite Library Network draw for a “10” Android tablet.

This ran very successfully at Euroa Secondary College in 2014, with 43 students taking part and the big prize in

the inaugural year was won by Euroa Secondary College student Kendall Richards.

Curriculum Day 29th July

Studio Arts Unit 4 students are welcome to use L1 as a studio room to work on their personal folios. Great

opportunity to use the space and get creative. Please let Ms. Sariusak know if you are intending to do so prior to

the day. Hope to see you there.

Year 7 Matters

How quickly another week passes! It has been an eventful week here at Euroa Secondary College with Year 7’s

working to be a part of various happenings, including sport. We've had a productive week in Year 7 classrooms

and are looking forward to sharing student’s progress with you at the Parent/Teacher nights in weeks seven and

eight of this term.

This week in Year 7, we have had HeadSpace running the first session of a program called ‘Social Warriors’ on

Friday with a select group of students. This 6 week course is designed for students to learn, practice and explore

social interactions. The feedback so far from participants is that they enjoyed the session and are looking forward

to next week. We hope that each of the students participating in this course will become leaders for their peers in

this field!

Congratulations to all of the Year 7 students who participated in the Junior Girls Football in Wangaratta. It was an

eventful day.

English and Maths Competitions A reminder that next week we are holding the English and Maths competitions. These will take place in Periods 1

and 2 on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Students have been notified if they are taking part in these

examinations. Applications were on the booklist at the end of last year. There are still some spots left, so it is

Page 4: CHALLENGE EMPOWERMENT RESPECT RESILIENCE EWSLETTER … · Gnurad-Gundidj campus, our 2015 Talent Night going off without a hitch and highlighting yet again the extraordinary talented

possible for students who would like, to take part. If this is you, please let your Home Group teacher know

immediately.

Year 7 Homework I have had some questions about the Year 7 homework requirements recently. All of the Year 7 students have

access to the IXL maths program and could be doing 10 – 15 minutes at least three times a week, along with

learning their spelling words for English and doing some reading each night. Students should also be using their

planners to write any in any other homework requirements, during class each day. The planner is also a good way

to keep in touch with your child’s teachers.

Uniform There have been a lot of Year 7 students wearing hoodies under their school windcheaters to school lately.

Hoodies are not part of the required uniform and if your child arrives in one, will be asked to remove it. Beanies

are also not to be worn.

Any other questions or concerns may be discussed with Miss Dagg or myself. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

Earn & Learn

Earn & Learn is back again in 2015 and from Wednesday, July 15th, any purchases made at Woolworths will earn

you stickers – Euroa Secondary College is participating again so please return your completed sticker cards to the

box in the Library.

Tiqbiz

Euroa Secondary College is in the process of trialling the tiqbiz communication app. as an alternative to our

current Skoolbag app.

We would appreciate it if parents, students etc. could download the ticbiz app. and provide feedback to the

General Office.

Talent night

What a fantastic night was had by all last Wednesday. Our talent nights seem to be getting better and better,

showing just how much talent ESC has. Acts ranged from singing, instrumentals, mixed bands, duets and even a

solo dance performance. It was just terrific how all the performers got up on stage and gave it their all- Myself

knowing how daunting it can be, standing up on stage with everyone’s eyes on you.

It was a difficult job for our three fantastic judges- Mrs Boots (Bootsy) and two ex ESC students, Serena and

Jarrod- to select the act for the judge’s award. It was a very well deserved win for Mahoney Fothergill, who I

believe was performing at her first talent night. Well done Mahoney.

The award for the heaviest money bag at the end of the night went to the funk band - Monkey see, Funky do. Well

done on a terrific performance. Perhaps next year, we could borrow a set of scales to make things easier?

The night was very well presented, by one of our band leaders- Laura Bennett, and school captain- Lucy

Broughton. The little bit of musical trivia during the night kept everyone entertained between acts. And let’s not

forget the wonderful interval entertainment of the ESC Concert band. I’m not sure who enjoys finishing with

A Klezma

Karnival

(One of the

bands

favourite

pieces of

music) more,

the band or

the audience.

Maybe next

year, we will

see our

teachers get

their act ready

a little in

advance, but

what a

performance

they gave us,

without even

a practise.

Well done to

everyone

involved and

thank you to

all who

helped put

such a great

night together.

Georgina

Ulrich.
