“Operation Moody Transition”

When the Chamber and the Valdosta

Career Center learned that up to 300 military members at Moody AFB would be separating or retiring from the Air Force in the next few months due to down-sizing, the “opportunity flags” starting waving! With the ongoing discus-sions about workforce

quality in our community, it was a no-brainer: We should work togeth-er as a community to encourage these well trained service members to stay in South Georgia. Who wouldn’t want an employee that is well trained, has great work ethics, and can pass a drug test and a criminal background check?

Together with VSU, WGTC, SBDC, SEEDS Business Resource Center, Valdosta Veterans First, and private sector employment services, we created Operation Moody Transition. Going directly into the local job market, upgrading skills and obtaining needed credentials, or starting your own business – these are the basic options for newly separated military members. This summer, OMT coordinated employer work-shops, resume and inter-viewing workshops, and the Moody TransitionExpo to bring all theplayers together. For the first time ever, the Chamber has contracted with a professional consultant to guide us through a 3-day event that is expected to bring in 200+ new Chamber members. “Your Chamber Connec-tion” is a Texas-based company with a stellar track record with chambers around the country. The company is well known in chamber circles for their effective – and FUN – membership campaigns.
