OUR NEwEST TECHNOLOgY LEAP: tHE OFFICIAL HILtON HEAD ISLAND MOBILE APP
Imagine you are shopping in the Coligny Plaza area and you receive a text message on your cell phone that says, “Enjoy a complimentary bottle of wine with your dinner tonight,” at a nearby restaurant.
Messages like these will be readily available through Hilton Head Island’s new official mobile app, set to launch in January, and compatible with iPhone and iPad technology. In February, the mobile application will also be compatible with other popular mobile devices, including Blackberry and Android brands.
“The ‘third screen,’ or mobile devices, have revolutionized the way consumers receive and process information, especially about places where they want to relax, play and eat,” says Susan Thomas, vice president of the Hilton Head Island Visitor & Convention Bureau.
“The new Hilton Head Island Official Mobile App will cater to our visitors’ desire to get instantaneous information about the Island, such as dining, shopping, golf, tennis, biking, eco-tours, wellness, arts and cultural offerings, either prior to vacationing here, or once they have arrived,” stated Thomas.
According to Thomas, the new mobile app will allow local businesses to serve up special offers on a day-to-day, real-time basis. “We believe this can build our brand, as well as help drive sales, boost lodging occupancy, increase golf course rounds, and more,” said Thomas.
How will it work? The chamber will sponsor two workshops in mid-
February that will soft launch the mobile app, covering its capabilities and instructions on how to upload information. Chamber member businesses will be given a password to add any pertinent information available, such as hours of operation, photos and a unique description of their services.
Once operational, Hilton Head Island Mobile App users will be able to quickly pull up events, activities and maps to local restaurants, shops, and attractions.
what are the challenges?“The main challenge facing the Hilton Head Island
Mobile App is our cell tower coverage,” stated Bill Miles, chamber president. “There are just too many areas of limited coverage on the Island.” Miles stated that the Chamber has been actively working with the Town of Hilton Head Island and members of the Island’s hospitality industry to find solutions for this issue, which was also highlighted as a major issue of the 2010 mayoral election.
Mobile App workshops:There’s no charge to be part of the mobile app
workshops, Tuesday, February 15, 2 p.m., chamber headquarters. Wednesday, February 16, 10:30 a.m., chamber headquarters.
