Business Women’s Networking Luncheon

This event brings members together in a prime networking setting. It is also a time to celebrate the Chamber’s efforts and growth, to look ahead as new leadership takes its place, and to enjoy good food, drink and entertainment.

This year, the event will feature Ross Tucker as the keynote speaker.

Wyomissing-native Ross Tucker is a former NFL offensive lineman, and currently a media personality, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker.

After being named a Two-Time Academic All-American at Princeton Universi-ty, Tucker played in the NFL for 7 years for the Redskins, Cowboys, Bills and Patriots.

Since retiring from the NFL 2008, Ross is now a year round host on SiriusXM NFL Radio, a studio analyst for both the NBC Sports Network and the YES Net-work, a color analyst for NFL games for Sports USA, the creator & host of the “Ross Tucker Football Podcast”, the lead NFL columnist for Sporting News and also a primary fill-in for the Dan Patrick Show.

Outside of his broadcast media career, Tucker is the co-founder and CEO of GoBigRecruiting.com, a service that allows high-school student-athletes to submit their videos to college coaches online and know when it has been reviewed.

Tucker currently resides in Harrisburg, PA.

Applications for the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence are now being accepting until January 3, 2017

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has announced that they are now accept-ing nominations for the 2017 Governor’s Awards for

Environmental Excellence.

If you have an eligible project, business, organization or person to nominate, we would encourage you to submit your application or if you know of an eligible project, person or organization, please consider nomi-

nating them or forwarding this information to them.

The Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence are presented each year to highlight the best in en-vironmental innovation and expertise throughout the Commonwealth. The awards are the highest state-wide honor bestowed upon businesses, individuals and organizations for environmental performance and

innovation.

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the PA Department of Environmental Protection will hold an event to honor the recipients of the “2017 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence” on Tuesday

April 25th, 2017at the Hilton Harrisburg.

Individuals and organizations are invited to apply for the 2017 awards for projects completed between August 1, 2015, and July 31, 2016. The awards are open to all individuals, whether a project leader or participant, and to all nonprofits, businesses, farms, government agencies, and educational institutions.

The application deadline is Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 5 p.m. Applications must be emailed to [email protected]. Find complete project guidelines and applications at

http://www.dep.pa.gov/About/Awards/EnvironmentalExcellence/Pages/default.aspx

Projects are evaluated on the basis of nine criteria: degree of environmental protection, public service, pollution prevention, climate change, sustainability, partnership, economic impact, innovative technology, and environ-

mental education and outreach. A project doesn’t need to meet all criteria to merit an award.

KEEP MEDICATION OUT OF REACHProtect your family during the holidays and every day

The holidays are a time when you open your home to friends and family, which often includes their little ones. It’s easy to get distracted catching up with Aunt Sandra or helping in the kitchen, and it does not take long for a child to stray. Whether your house is child-free or already child-proof, there are steps you should take to prevent accidents.

We take medication and vitamins to feel and stay well, but according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 60,000 young children are hospitalized every year for consuming medicine when their caretaker is not looking. It is important to remember that even non-prescription medication is potentially dangerous if taken incorrectly. Children are not the only ones at risk; adults may “look for something in the cabinet” for a headache and take a potentially dangerous medicine. A good rule of thumb to follow is that all medicines and vitamins should be kept up, away, and out of a child’s reach and sight.

A few simple steps can help prevent medication accidents in your home:

• Put medicines and vitamins out of reach and out of sight: Young children are curious and will put almost anything in their mouths. Walk around your house and find the safest place to keep medicine and vitamins. Stores sell “child-proof” locks to help deter little fingers from opening the medicine cabinet.

• Properly store medicines and vitamins after every use: You may be tempted to leave daily multi-vitamins on the counter or a prescription antibiotic at a sick child’s bedside; but, taking the time to prop-erly store medication can prevent problems in the future.

• Wait for the click: Many medication and vitamin bottles are child-proof and include a lock that “clicks” when activated. When closing these bottles, wait for the “click” to ensure the bottle is fully closed. Do not let “child-proof” bottles give you a false sense of security. Keep these bottles out of reach.

• Talk to your guests: Ask houseguests and visitors to keep purses, bags, or other items that con-tain medicine away and out of sight while in your home, or offer to store the medication in a safe place.

Not all holiday functions will be held at your own home. Here are a few tips to help protect your child away from home:

• Teach your children about medicine safety: Education is the best prevention. Teach your children what medicine is and why you must be the one to give it to them. Never tell them medicine is candy. Children are naturally curious and may go exploring for “candy” in Grandma’s purse.

• Be prepared in case of an emergency: Call poison control center immediately if you think your child ingested medicine or vitamins you did not give him or her. Program Poison Control’s phone num-ber (1.800.222.1222) into your cell phone so you are prepared in the event an accident happens.

These tips do not just apply to the holiday season. Making safe medication storage a year-long habit is a great way to reduce the risk of harm from medications.
