2012 Offices Up For ElectionIt is another election year and with the City of Elko’s election now occurring with other local, state, and national elections, it looks to be an exciting year.

Your Elko Area Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee wants to encourage pro-business candidates to consider running for the offices that are up for election this year. While some of these seats will not have an incumbent running due to term limits, a number of people have an-nounced their intentions to file. GAC is not endorsing, nor opposing, any particular candidate. We feel that it is important for all candidates, whether incumbent or not, to support our local businesses and that is why we are encouraging people to run.

The following offices are up for election this year (Bold and in italics indicate incumbents who are term-limited and cannot re-run):

2 Carlin City Council Seats (currently held by Lee Griswold and Lincoln Litchfield)

2 Elko City Council Seats (currently held by Jim Conner and Jay Elquist).

Elko TV Board Seat D (currently held by James Elliott)Elko TV Board Seat E (currently held by William Hance)

Elko Convention and Visitor’s Authority Seat A (currently held by Gary Morfin) Elko Convention and Visitor’s Authority Seat C (currently held by Connie Campbell)

Elko County Board of Commissioners District 1 (currently held by Demar Dahl)Elko County Board of Commissioners District 3 (currently held by Glen Guttry)Elko County Board of Commissioners District 5 (currently held by Warren Russell)

Nevada Assembly District 33 (currently held by John Ellison)

Nevada Senate District 19 (currently held Dean Rhoads)

US House of Representatives District 2 (currently held by Mark Amodei)

US Senate (currently held by Dean Heller)

Due to redistricting, there have been changes to some County Commission and School Board district boundaries. The Elko County Clerk’s office can be reached at 753-4600 to inquire about residential eligibility for seats.

Those interested in filing for city offices need to file with the respective city between March 16 and March 29. TV Board, ECVA Board, School Board, and County Commission need to file with the County Clerk between March 3 and March 16. Assembly, Senate, Congressional, and US Senate Can-didates need to file in Carson City with the Secretary of State between March 3 and March 16.

If you or someone you know needs to register to vote, please come into the Chamber. Registering to vote for the Primary Election closes on Saturday, May 12 and for the General Election on Saturday, October 6.

Ruby Mountain Relay“MOST MEN TAKE THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW. A FEW TAKE THE ROAD LESS TRAV-ELED. I CHOSE TO CUT THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS – THE RUBY MOUNTAINS”

HOW TO PLAN FOOD FOR THE RUBY MOUNTAIN RELAYOn August 3-4, 2012 Elko County will throw open its doors and welcome hundreds of enthusiastic runners to the inaugural Ruby Mountain Relay. This 184-mile running relay race will take some plan-ning and a question for the first time relay runner might be how to plan your food? Spending 24-36 hours in a van, miles from civilization with limited stores and vendors can be intimidating to say the least. Carrying your own food will be vital. Last minute shopping trips can leave you with a pile of food that is suddenly unappetizing at 3 am. Choose the wrong foods, and you might pay the price during your run. Here are some of tips to help you plan your meals from relay guru, Teri Smith.Consider the CourseMake sure you are well acquainted with the race course before you start so you know where amenities are located! A RMR course map can be located at www.rubymountainrelay.com.Consider Your ScheduleHow long is the race? When will you be running? If you find yourself with a leg close to the dinner hour, you may need to adjust your eating needs, regardless of what the team plans to do. You may find that you need to eat at least an hour before you run or you feel the effects the entire time. Bring the food you need to make sure you’re taking care of yourself.Consider Your Fueling NeedsEstimate how long it will take your team to finish your race and then determine how often you need to eat to keep you on a relatively normal schedule. You will need some protein as well as carbs; solid food seems to help keep runners feeling their best. Some runners will experience g.i. distress during these races, and some of it can be traced to your eating. You’re also going to need lots of water and energy drinks. Make sure you’re replacing electrolytes with energy drinks and simple foods like chips and salsa.Consider Your Backup Plan & Team DynamicsDiscuss an eating plan with your team, but have a backup just in case you are running behind or ahead of schedule. Have backup food so you don’t get stuck without a chance to eat because transitions and driving took far longer than anticipated. Consider Your Worst Eating BehaviorsPlan for your own personal munchies. Consider this: head to the store with the best of intentions – healthy eating, low fat foods, perfect fueling for the race – and shop accordingly. Then, 4 or 5 hours in to the race, after you’ve run a leg, you might start craving salt and sugar, fatty foods and soda. Don’t be miserable with the boring bagels, bananas, and energy bars you’ve stocked up on. Make sure you have a mix of the foods you should eat, and the ones you know you will want to eat.Sample Food IdeasBanana bread, bananas, yogurt, peanut butter sandwiches, a variety of fruits & veggies, bagels, cream cheese, cold grilled chicken, rolls, rice crackers, red vines, animal cookies, homemade chocolate chip cookies, M&Ms, chips & salsa, boiled eggs, water, and your drinks of choice.

NAE Open HouseThe Nevada Association of Employers will be hosting an open house event designed to introduce you further to the HR prod-ucts and services NAE provides and the benefits of membership. In addition, they will be updating attendees on important de-velopments in Human Resources and the employment law field that you and your organization may find valuable. The open

house will be held on Wednesday, March 21st from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Red Lion Hotel & Casino. Although attendance is free, the event does require registration. Please contact Cathy Sprinkel at [email protected] or call (775) 329-4241 for more information or to register.

To Whom It May Concern: As a child, did you dream of going camping with your friends? Perhaps you wanted to go horseback riding in a beautiful mountain setting or try your hand at archery or crafts? Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children also dream of camping, but too often these dreams go unfulfilled. Camp SignShine, a non-profit organization, has made many dreams for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children a reality. The Camp has served the communities of Nevada and Northern California for 36 years through generous donations from people like you. The Camp provides opportunities to learn about and share Deaf and Hard of Hearing culture while participating in many camping activities described in the enclosed brochure. The Camp also provides opportunities for the campers' hearing siblings and children of Deaf parents which improves communication at home, at school and in their communities. We are particularly proud of our Counselor in Training (CIT) program that consists of selected teenagers, ages 15-18, who have the opportunity to participate in a program of leadership training and team building. They especially love our "high ropes" course. Many of our current staff members are former "CIT" members. Planning for Camp SignShine 2012 is well underway. We have made the deposit to secure the week of July 15-21, 2012 at the beautiful facilities of Camp Ronald McDonald on Eagle Lake near Susanville, CA. This year Camp SignShine celebrates its 37

th anniversary and we would like to make this week especially unique for our campers.

This year again, we anticipate a full "house!" However, from past experience, we know there will be several children who need financial assistance to be able to participate in this wonderful opportunity. Camp SignShine is supported through donations from the community, businesses and service organizations whose names you will notice in the brochure enclosed. Adding your name to the list is only one small way we can say "thank you" for your generous donation. Tax deductible "scholarships" of $375 per child provide tuition for many of our campers. Please consider sponsoring one or more of our children with a generous, tax deductible donation. These children are our leaders for tomorrow; let's give them the best tools possible for that job. Thank you for your time and your generous consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely,
