What is Pitstop Car Care Ministry all about? The Pitstop Car Care Ministry is a non-profit organization of individuals and 2 garages that have come together to serve the Mount Joy area communities. Twice a year in April and October, PCCM sets a Saturday work-day where two garages open their doors to provide a free oil and filter change. They also make a preliminary inspection and make recommendations of what things should be done for safe operation of the car.

This program focuses on families that have financial hardship, single parent families, seniors and families with disabilities. Organizations such as churches, Joni and Friends, Hope Within submit the names of families 6 weeks before the oil and filter change date. Pitstop CCM then contacts the car owners to set up an appointment time and determine what oil and filter will be needed.

Twelve families received this service on Saturday, April 18, 2015. In some cases families with hardships may receive financial assistance for future repairs.

The Mount Joy National Day of Prayer Breakfast will be held on May 7, from 6:30 to 8 am at The Gathering Place.

Our government has set aside a special National Day of Prayer each year, requesting that the people of this great country take time to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance over America. The date is set for the first Thursday of May each year, falling on May 7, in 2015.

As part of this national celebration, a team from the Mount Joy community has scheduled a Mount Joy National Day Prayer Breakfast that will be held on Saturday, May 7 at The Gathering Place from 6:30 to 8 AM.

Following a delicious breakfast our regional PA Senator, Ryan Aument, will give the welcome, followed by a time of prayer for our government, military, education, families, churches, and media.

Tickets for the breakfast are $5.00 per person and can be purchased from any of the local participating churches or at the service decks of the 3 following Mount Joy locations: J. B. Hostetters, Pies Galore, and Darrenkamps. To call, text or email your ticket order, contact Glenn Musser as follows:

MOVE IT! Some surprising facts:• Two hundred fifty thousand deaths each year are due to

physical inactivity. • Sixty percent of adults are sedentary, with no improvement in

activity levels over the last 20 years. • The average adult spends 10 to 15 hours each day immobile. • Documented health benefits of exercise include prevention

of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, hypertension, improved mental health, energy levels and more.

• Johns Hopkins Over 50 Newsletter called exercise the single most important anti-aging measure anyone can follow.

• Aging for many people is associated with a decline in strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, bone density, and mental function. Most of this physiologic decline stems from inactivity and is not a natural consequence of aging.

• Recent research supports that it’s never too late to start exercising and that even small increases can have great benefits.

• Research shows if you can exercise regularly for six months, you have made a change that can last a lifetime.

• Combine all types of exercise for the maximum anti-aging effect:

• Cardiovascular: At least 30 minutes on most days. If you already are doing 30 minutes daily, consider increasing the frequency or duration of your workout.

• Strength Training: Two to three per week. • Flexibility: At least four times per week. Stretching is easy to

do at home even while watching TV. Many people neglect stretching exercises, but it’s an integral part of the exercise prescription for healthy aging. If performed properly, stretching helps with movement, prevents injuries and is beneficial for the aches and pains that many people associate with aging.

• Mind/Body: Research shows that mind/body exercise, such as yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates is helpful for emotional and physical health.

Stay motivated!• Get an exercise partner• Do exercise you enjoy, vary your routine and add music• Schedule your exercise• Set goals and reward yourself for achieving them• Identify your barriers to exercise• Consider hiring an exercise professional, such as a personal

trainerRemember: Start gradually. If you have health problems or a strong family history of heart disease, consult your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Mount JoyBy Chamber member John Meyers

I grew up in Mount Joy, lived here all my life,Two blocks away from my future wife.

Still a small town but bigger than before,We have a McDonald’s and Burger King nowBut Twin Kiss and Tastee Freeze are no more.

The town back then was split in two names,Mount Joy and Florin are now one in the same.

I grew up in a house that bordered the “Ditch”,We lost a few balls after a bad pitch.

Three bridges over the tracks were since torn down,I would cross over one, going to Kline’s, Murphy’s and the other side of town.

The “Churchyard” and “Tank” were places we would play,Morning and afternoon we would play baseball every day.

Seiler and Grandview were names of schools where we did learn,We all walked to school back then, there was really no concern.

Mount Joy High School, then Beahm Jr. High by name,They called it the “Annex”. It’s no longer there, what a shame.

The old firehouse, two train stations were also torn down,I wish those old buildings were still around.

The “Cove” was a place where across the water you could drive,The water was not deep, no place to dive.

Kunkle Field was the best baseball field around,Beyond the fence an “airplane” and “Bandstand” were found.

We would swim at the “pool” all afternoonWe would stay in the water until our skin would prune.

It was a small town when I was a boy,It’s a little bigger now, but I still like Mount Joy.

$Mother’s Day is almost here. This occasion may

have special significance for you if you’ve been fortunate enough to have your mother around for your adult life. So naturally, you’ll want to bring Mom some flowers or another gift. But if she’s planning to retire soon, you may want to think about a longer-term way to improve her life — namely, by initiating a conversation about her retirement income strategy.

Of course, she may already have matters well in hand. But a great many people on the verge of retirement have not planned for those years, so you may be able to provide some valuable suggestions. Here are a few ideas:

• Boost contributions to retirement plans. If Mom is still working, urge her to contribute as much as she can afford to her IRA and her employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). The chances are pretty good that she will be spending many years in retirement — in fact, the average life expectancy for a 65-year-old woman is 20.5 more years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So she’ll want to accumulate as much as possible before she bids “adieu” to the working world.

• Discuss appropriate withdrawal rates. Encourage your mother to meet with a financial professional to determine an appropriate rate of withdrawal from her investments. To help ensure that she doesn’t outlive her resources, she needs to avoid taking out too much during her early years of retirement.

• Take care of legal arrangements. If you haven’t already done so, ask your mother if she has drawn up the important legal documents related to her estate plans. Does she have a will? Has she created a durable power of attorney, which allows her to name someone to make financial and health care decisions on her behalf if she becomes incapacitated? As you know, this is a sensitive topic, so you’ll want to approach it with care.

• Evaluate Social Security options. Your mother is probably well aware that she can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but will get much bigger

monthly payments if she waits until her full retirement age, which will likely be 66 or 67. But she may not know that she might be able to benefit from a Social Security “spousal strategy” that could result in her receiving more income than she could get by just taking her own benefits.

For example, if her spouse is the higher wage earner and can afford to delay taking benefits, your mother could eventually receive higher survivor benefits. Or, your mother and her spouse could employ a “file and suspend” strategy. Under this strategy, her spouse, upon reaching full retirement age, files for retirement benefits and then immediately requests to have those benefits suspended. As a result, your mother can file for spousal benefits, which would be larger than what she would receive at her full retirement age. To make sure they are making any Social Security-related moves correctly, though, your mother and her spouse will want to consult with a tax advisor who is thoroughly familiar with Social Security rules.

You want your mother to enjoy a long, happy and active retirement. So, talk to her about the moves she can make to help turn that aspiration into reality.
