Old Fashioned Christmas
Another great year is in the books for Old Fashioned Christmas. The event was held the evening of December 14th and the weather was much more cooperative this year than last! New this year was the wine and whiskey tasting event held in the O’Hanlon Seed/Andrews Feed Building sponsored by the Elwood Chamber. Three local wineries and one distillery participated in the event. The event was well attended and both vendors and community members had rave reviews. The Chamber hopes to bring back this event next year and make it even bigger. Thank you to all the businesses who helped to make Old Fashioned Christmas possible and to all those who participated in the events, including the annual lighting contest!

Brell Realty celebrates Grand Opening in their new downtown location
Avanti and Brell Realty getting ready to celebrate a decade of serving the Elwood Community
Get ready for fun in July as Avanti and Brell Realty & Auction both celebrate their 10 year business anniversaries! The two will host open houses on July 19
th at their perspective busi-
ness locations. More details will be announced on that as the date draws near. The two owners, Laura Tilson and LeahAnn Brell, had fun dreaming together about having their own businesses a little over 10 years ago and are going to have fun celebrating them together this summer! Laura Tilson began her career 18 years ago in Lincoln. Her journey led her to Kearney and then she finally located in Elwood. She took the plunge and opened Avanti Salon. Laura rented a space in Elwood and 7 years ago her husband, Shane and father-in-law, Chuck, built her a brand new salon located at 305 Calvert Ave. Avanti Salon is a Surface Concept Salon and Laura is a Core Educator for Surface. She loves to teach and share her passion for hair and the Surface product line. Avanti Salon & Boutique offers the latest hair trends with Laura and Jodi Lerdall. Avanti also offers spray tans, massages with Heidi Button, and the latest trends in clothing.
Laura is thankful for the support the Elwood and surrounding communities and her guests have given her for the past 10 years and looks forward to continuing to bring new and exciting hair and clothing trends to Elwood. In July of 2008, just after the real estate market crashed, LeahAnn Brell left her job at District 9 Probation to venture out on her own in the real estate industry. She started advertising her new business, Brell Realty & Auction, August 1 2008 and had her office in her home. A year later she moved into a small downtown office. As the business grew and added employees, they needed more space so she renovated a home and relocated to the North edge of Elwood . After 4 years at that location, LeahAnn recently remodeled the old Almquist building and moved her business back down-town. Currently working at Brell Realty & Auction are LeahAnn Brell, Broker/Owner; Pamela Snowardt, Aministrative Assistant; Randy Helms, Sales Agent & Auctioneer; Kelly Gydesen, Sales Agent; Bill Brell, Auctioneer; and Larry Brell Auctioneer.
We are very grateful for the support we’ve received over the years in Gosper County and surrounding areas. It has been a blessing meeting and working with people over the years and we look forward to continuing to serve the area in the future.

Elwood Hometown Market
The Elwood Hometown Cooperative Market celebrated its 5th Anniversary in February.
The Board of Directors is grateful to the community for its support of the market and
investment in Elwood.
The Board invites everyone to shop – no membership required. If you are interested in be-coming a shareholder, a Common Stock share (the voting share) is $500. A Preferred Stock share (the investment share) is $500 each. The Board now offers a payment plan; $50 down
with 9 monthly payments of $50/month. The payment plan is available for Common and Preferred Stock shares. Lifetime Membership is $25, making the total down payment $75. A
lifetime membership can also be purchased separately for $25, giving access to “Member On-ly” specials in the store, but no voting rights. Contact the store at 308-785-2182 and leave
your name so a board member can contact you.
Reasons to support your local Market:
The market supports the school and other organizations. Your shopping support allows the market to continue that support.
Up to 68% of money spent at a local business returns to the community. Shopping at a chain in a community lowers that percentage to 43%. And if you shop outside the community, the percentage is 0%.
The market employs 8-9 local people.
Lunch specials Monday - Thursday. Yummy Ribs on Friday!
If you don’t see it in the store, ask Julie Poggendorf if it can be ordered. As an aside, when shopping for fresh produce, our delivery is on Thursday and the freshest produce is available over the weekend.
As we move forward the line between profitability/longevity and loss/closure is a fine line. For example, one family/individual spending $50 more a week at the market yields an increase in yearly sales of $2,600. Multiply that by 10 families/individuals and the increase in yearly sales is $26,000. That $26,000 could be the difference between profitability and loss. And so can the $2,600. All customers, all sales matter to a small business.
