“I’ve never been to the Lakes Area in the winter.” That phrase was heard a couple of times this January & February. It took something special to bring them to town. From snow-mobile races & fishing derbies to an ice palace & sporting events… there have been a lot of reasons to invite guests to the lake. Some-times we forget to invite. It is easy to take the beauty of this area for granted. Winter can seem normal to us; snow/ice can seem like work instead of play. The MN Super Bowl and DL’s Ice Palace are good examples of making reasons for people to come. These events, in a way, threw a good party and the people came. It’s kinda like at home, family and friends can stop anytime but it takes a birthday party or an occasion to get them all in the same room. What does that mean for business? When was the last time you “threw a par-ty”? When did you last invite others to come in? Maybe it’s time. (PLUS: as an added bonus your workspace may get an early spring cleaning.) When you are ready to invite others… let the Chamber know. We’d love to add your event to our calendars and help you with your marketing. Help us invite people to the lakes and into your doors. ~Carrie Johnston, Your Chamber President (Pictured is opening night of the DL Ice Palace. Over 1000 people filled the street to attend this event on a cold Thursday evening in Febru-ary! Thank you to all that “threw” this party!)

The Amazing—Great Polar Race

On Saturday February 10th, 6 teams raced around Detroit Lakes chasing clues, solving puzzles and sharing lots of laughs. Each participant received a fun canvas tote sponsored by AArvig. From a scavenger hunt at the Becker County Museum to a word scramble in the windows of downtown to taffy tasting at Becker Pet & Garden… these teams were up for the challenge! Thank you to co-chairs Jennifer Winn, AArvig and Lori Bachman, AAmerican Cancer Society. Thanks to our prize package donors and to our race locations: Arvig, American Cancer Society, Pemberton Law Firm, ERA North-land Realty, Schiller Insurance, Midwest Workwear, BD’s Gas & Grub, Becker Pet & Garden, Becker County Museum, Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, Ecumen, Holiday Inn on the Lake, La Barista, LEADERship DL, Leigh-ton Broadcasting, Mainstream Boutique, MN Flyers Gymnastics, Norby’s Department Store and Washington Square Mall. If you have these amenities in the area of your community (other than DL) in Becker County, and want to be sure they are included, let me know.
