Hospitality begins at home, and Andy and Nila Vanmali, owners and operators of Baymont Inn & Suites and co-owners of Candlewood Suites and the soon-to-come Holiday Inn Express & Suites, work tirelessly to ensure their hospitality enterprises are each enthusiastic investors in the well-being of Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky, their home since 2003.

Baymont Inn & Suites, located at 165 Three Springs Road, considers listening to their guests and treating them like neighbors to be what they do best. They are committed to providing all their guests, whether they are vacationing families, emergency visitors, or business “road warriors”, all the comforts of home when they can’t actually be there. Candlewood Suites, located at 540 Wall Street, invites you to consider them “home” as well. The property features studio suites designed to accommodate the extended-stay traveler, allowing extended-stay guests to live, work, and relax on their own schedules. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites, scheduled to open in spring 2011, will offer a fresh and uncomplicated option for the business traveler and family alike.

Quality must run in the family; both hotels rank among the top ten percent within their brands nationwide in quality assurance inspection and guest satisfaction scores. This reflects the influence of the Vanmalis’ hands-on management, devotion to superior customer service, and their commitment to physical improvements to their properties, even in these trying economic times.

Because they believe a business can only benefit if the community in which it is located thrives as well, the Vanmailis’ have inspired their properties to give generously (whether it be time, money, or goods) to organizations such as United Way of Southern Kentucky, Barren River Area Safe Space, the American Red Cross, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society, the Fraternal Order of Police, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Central Kentucky, Helping Hands, and the Salvation Army, as well as many local schools and churches. Chairman’s CommentsThe past few months provided good

news for our Chamber and region. First was the announcement of TMS Automotive, LLC’s decision to locate its start-up automotive company in Bowling Green, offering value-added

manufacturing to customers in the region including Bowling Green Metalforming and Dana Corporation. Thirty-five employees will be hired, along with a capital investment of $2.17 million.

The Washington DC fly-in held in June was a great opportunity to have a dialogue with our U.S. Senators and Congressmen about issues that impact our business climate. Additionally, in the recent Special Session, our governor signed a bill bolstering the current financing mechanism of the Kentucky Transpark, lowering the TIF threshold for downtown redevelopment to $150 million and revamping Kentucky’s incentives to compete globally for new jobs.

Thanks Grassroots Network members for your communication with our legislators! We are pleased to include these successes on the Chamber’s Legislative Scorecard.

The Board of Directors’ Executive Committee will visit with the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce on August 20 -21 to learn about their chamber, its economic development program and small business initiatives. Visits like these provide great insight to what is working well for other chambers.

Our upcoming Coffee Hour on August 28 will be held at the WKU Carroll Knicely Conference Center and is sponsored by Baymont Inn & Suites, Candlewood Suites and Holiday Inn Express. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Local leaders throughout the region, Western Kentucky University affiliates, and members of the Board of Directors of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce spent several days in Washington D.C. in early June discussing South Central Kentucky’s legislative priorities with members of the Kentucky congressional delegation.

Hosted by the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce and led by Chamber Board Chairman Todd Davis, the fourth annual South Central Kentucky Washington DC Fly-in was held on June 9-11.

“The DC Fly-in is an additional legislative effort on behalf of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce and our Board of Directors to reach out to our legislative delegation on behalf of the Chamber partnership,” said Chamber President and CEO James N. Hizer, CEcD. “The time we spend in Washington not only gives us the opportunity to present our priorities and positions on significant federal issues, but it also gives us the opportunity to thank the legislators who have worked hard to make positive changes for South Central Kentucky.”

Fly-in participants who traveled to our nation’s capitol had the opportunity to spend time with Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning along with Congressmen Brett Guthrie, John Yarmuth, Hal Rogers, Ed Whitfield, Ben Chandler and Geoff Davis.

“The Washington D. C. fly-in is a great opportunity for Chamber partners to thank our legislators for all of the work they do on behalf of our community and region,” said Todd Davis, 2009 chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors. “It is also a chance to have a dialogue with our senators and congressmen about issues that impact our business climate.”

Issues discussed included the key congressional priorities identified by the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Topics ranged from the opposition of the Employee Free Choice Act to support for free trade agreements with Columbia and South Korea. Participants also discussed the funding for the Corps of Engineers to repair the Rochester Dam on the Green River, funding for the Corps of Engineers to study raising the level of Barren River Lake to improve the water supply

of Bowling Green and other regional communities, the funding of additional master planning for the Kentucky Transpark, and additional funding for Western Kentucky University initiatives.

“We appreciate the time and attention our legislators in Washington give us each year to discuss our views and needs,” said Marc Elliott, vice president of property development and public policy. “It is certainly time well spent.”

Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Hosts Fourth Annual DC Fly-in

The Leadership Bowling Green Class of 2009 participated in Agri-Business Day on May 20, 2009. The day was kicked off with an introduction to the day chairs: Lisa Dunn, Don Cole, and Carrie Sablan.

When you pick up a box of cereal, a loaf of bread, or even grab a biscuit on the way to work from Hardees, you probably do not think about the time, labor, money and passion that was involved in bringing that product from the farm to the table. During our first stop at the Ballance Farm, we were reminded of just those things. The Ballance Farm is a family owned, ten-thousand acre row crop farm. Joe Neal Ballance spoke to us about some of the work that goes into harvesting wheat, corn and soybeans.

While at The Ballance Farm, we listened to a presentation by Joanna Coles, the Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent with the UK Cooperative Extension Service. Joanna is one of five agents in our Warren County Extension office. The extension office also offers services in Horticulture, 4-H Youth Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences. The UK Cooperative Extension Service offers education programs, resources, and provides research through the university for people in our local community. Their goal is to make a difference in the lives of people through research-based education.

Our next presentation was by Donald Dunn, Executive Director of the ASCS office. Mr. Dunn gave a presentation about how farming is impacting Americans today. There are less than 1.4% of farmers making up the American population to provide food for millions of people worldwide. There is also less land that farmers have to farm on which means that they have to produce more with less. Mr. Dunn also explained to the class about a popular program called the Green River Crep

program. This program allows a person to get paid for the use of his or her land to restore natural habitats.

Next on the day’s agenda was the tour of the WKU Ag Farm. We kicked off the tour with a hayride through the farm, where we first learned about the 2 hole golf course. The golf course is used by WKU’s horticulture department to study the different types of grasses used for turf and see how they would survive in our climate. After a delicious lunch of ribeye sandwiches, provided by the Warren County Cattlemen’s Association and the L.D. Brown Expo Center Staff, we finished off the tour led by Assistant Farm Manager David Newsom. David introduced us to Dr. Tim Gardner. Dr. Gardner is a veterinarian and specializes in artificial insemination and embryo transfer in cattle. The class watched intently as Dr. Gardner artificially inseminated beef cattle.

For our last stop on Agri-Business day, we were treated to

ice cream at Chaney’s Dairy Barn. Chaney’s is not only an ice cream parlor, but it was created as a solution for this family dairy to continue to thrive. Carl Chaney explained to us that dairy farms are rare to find in Kentucky anymore, milk prices are making it harder for dairies to survive, resulting in dairies having to come up with more creative ways to stay afloat. Chaney’s is a fully operational dairy farm that milks twice a day and also serves as a great tour for the many children that attend there on field trips. Chaney’s offers a unique atmosphere to enjoy one of life’s little pleasures. While visiting their ice cream parlor, you can also pick up other Kentucky-made products.

A special thanks to everyone that made this day possible!

Chamber Celebrates Volunteers, Committee Members & Partnership By Taking a Walk Down Memory Lane

The Chamburger Diner served up mini-burgers, soda and ice cream floats on July 16, while “Dick Clark” hosted the Chamber’s “American Bandstand” with special appearances by “Ricky Nelson” and “The Big Bopper.” Poodle skirt-clad girls and greasers sock-hopped to classic songs from the 1950’s. Classic cars lined the parking lot, and guests competed in such contests as bubble gum blowing, hula hooping, water balloon tossing and rock ‘n’ roll trivia. It was all part of the Chamber’s Volunteer and Partnership Appreciation Kick-off event – a way to give thanks and show support for the Chamber’s many partners who donate their time and effort into making Chamber programs and special events a success. Chamber committee members are devoted to recruiting and retaining partners and providing additional networking opportunities geared toward small businesses and industries alike. Volunteer-driven activities range from Small Business Week in May to Industry Appreciation Month in October. These individuals are crucial to the success of our Chamber and are the driving force for growth and development in South Central Kentucky. Thanks again to each volunteer, committee member, Ambassador, Board Member, and Chamber partner for being a vital part of our organization!

The Chamber would like to thank the following sponsorsfor their support of this event:

Joining President’s Club: Silver Level“The Realtor® Association of Southern Kentucky, Inc.”

The REALTOR® Association of Southern Kentucky, Inc. was

established in 1937 as the Bowling Green Board of REALTORS®, Inc. In 1997 the name was officially changed as a result of the expanded areas the Association serves. The Association represents over 400 REALTOR® members who are involved in all aspects of real estate in Allen, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Muhlenberg, Simpson and Warren Counties. Over 100 affiliated businesses also hold membership in the Association. The Association is chartered by the National Association of REALTORS® and is one of twenty-eight local associations that comprise the Kentucky Association of REALTORS®.

The mission of the Association is to develop, promote and provide programs and services that enhance the members’ ability to succeed; to promote and enforce the REALTOR® Code of Ethics and serve the public with the highest standards in the industry; to strengthen the REALTOR® image and inform the public of the value of working with a REALTOR®; to be a legislative force in preserving private property rights and; to work in concert with the state and national associations.

A common misconception is that every licensee is a REALTOR®. A real estate agent is a REALTOR® when he or she joins their local professional association and becomes a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, The Voice for Real Estate®, the world’s largest professional association. The term “REALTOR®” is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and abides by its strict Code of Ethics.

Among the many services provided by the Association to its members is the Multiple Listing Service operated by Real Estate Information Services. This state-of-the-art database of listings allows agents to cooperate with agents of different firms and provides each member with tools needed to market properties for sale. Over 2,500 listings are processed annually through the system.

The Association assures that business interests and private property rights are protected at the Local, State and National level. The REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) is the largest PAC in the United States and supports candidates and causes annually that have a direct impact on real estate interests.

Much like the Chamber, the Association is governed by a Board of Directors and served by volunteer committees. The dedication of the volunteers who have contributed countless hours of service attribute to the success of the association.

For a list of members of the Association that can help with your real estate needs, please call us at 781-1623.

Home Instead Senior CareBy: Christie Kelley

As people begin to age and assistance may be needed, look to Home Instead Senior Care. Located on Scottsville Road, Home Instead Senior Care provides professional, non-medical services to seniors, allowing them to receive the care they need within their own home. Home Instead Senior Care provides various services: companionship, personal care, medication reminders, and meal preparation, among others. Clients can be assisted up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Brad Cannon, owner of Home Instead Senior Care, began his business after becoming a licensed nursing home administrator. After working in the industry for seven years, Cannon began to realize that everyone in the facility desired to be at home in their personal, familiar surroundings. Cannon opened Home Instead Senior Care in 2002 to allow seniors to receive care at home. Since 2002, Home Instead Senior Care has grown continually; Cannon contributes this success to his team of committed people who tend to the details of providing exceptional care to seniors each day. Cannon believes his team takes their jobs personally, which spurs success.

Cannon’s desire to start his own business stemmed from his passion for seniors. Cannon states, “I have spent the past fifteen years working with seniors, and I want to ensure I provide them with a professional, trusted manner in which to age at home.” For those who are beginning to open their own businesses, Cannon suggests, “…Do your homework and ensure that there is a market for your product or service, [then] develop a detailed plan to provide the product or service in a manner that differentiates you from the pack. Finally, never go into the business only looking at the potential financial rewards. “

Another Tip from Darcy Rezac’s 88 Positive Networking® Tips: “Roger That.” Excellent online communication is key to maintaining good relationships, but we often fear hitting the Reply button--if it’s just to acknowledge an email. Perhaps we should all rethink this… radio communication between pilots and controllers always requires a “Roger.” It means “I’ve heard what you said. Conversation is complete.” Try using “ EOM” (End of Message) in the subject line to signal the recipient of email that they don’t have to open up the email. This works nicely for things like. ‘See you Friday.EOM’, ‘Congratulations! EOM.’”
