Between budget shortfalls, Presidential Town Hall meetings, and candidate announcements, this has definitely been a summer of politics in the Grand Valley. Before Congress reconvenes the Grand Junction Area Chamber has been sharing the business perspective on health insurance reform with lawmakers. While I am writing this as the Chamber Chairman of the Board, my day job is that of a banker. These days, bankers may not win any popularity contests. That being said, I want you to know

that I do not leave my banker training and instincts at the door when I come to the Chamber. I take my fiduciary responsibilities as a board member and officer of the Chamber very seriously. That is why I think it is important this month to give you, the shareholders and investors, an update on how your Chamber of Commerce is doing financially. When we adopted the 2009 budget last fall, we sent Diane back to sharpen her pencil a couple of times in an effort to create a budget that would be realistic and recognize the economic whitewater that was heading our way. 2009 is two thirds over and we are holding our own in a effort to end the year in the black but it hasn’t been easy. I will start with the bad news first. Membership investments which comprise 70% of our gross revenues performed reasonably well for the first five months of the year but fell off rather dramatically beginning in June. Our overall membership numbers have fallen to an eight year low and are hovering around 1100. We hope to boost that number with the Membership Drive that is going on this

month. Sponsorships and participation in Chamber events and projects is also less than we modestly budgeted for by about 25% for the year to date. Now for the good news, while actual number of members is much lower, the Chamber leadership actually planned for a drop in members in 2007 with the implementation of the tiered investment schedule. The concept was not to measure our success by the number of members we had but by the financial support we received to carry out the mission of the Chamber. So, in terms of real dollars we are only tracking about 2% behind budget for the year in terms of membership revenue. And, yes, sponsorship and other income are off substantially but so are expenses. Staff vacancies have not been filled, travel has been curtailed, and printing has been postponed or replaced by online communications. During the remainder of 2009, your staff and leadership will be looking for more ways to boost revenue, and cut expenses even further if needed. We also have a reserve fund that was established and added to in order to assist us with challenging economic times. So, as your Chairman and as a banker I want you to know this Chamber is on solid financial footing. Please feel free to contact Diane or myself if you have any questions about your investment in our organization…and once again…THANK YOU for that investment!

New Directors Proposed The Chamber’s Board Nominating Committee met and is presenting a slate of directors who will be appointed to serve a four-year term on the board with approval from the members. The complete list can be found on the website, www.gjchamber.org and has already been emailed to all members in good standing. According to the Chamber by-laws, “Any member in good standing may nominate additional candidates for Directors by petition as follows: The petition form shall state the name of the individual who is being nominated. The candidate must be a person who is 18 years of age or older and who is a member in good standing or associated with a member in good standing. The petition shall identify the name of the member with whom the candidate is associated and shall affirm that the candidate is willing and able to serve a full term as director, if elected. The petition must be signed by at least five percent (5%) of the current members in good standing indicating their desire that the named individual be included in the slate of candidates for Director. Each individual signing the petition must be a member in good standing or associated with a member in good standing. Multiple signatures of individuals representing the same member shall be counted as one nomination. The petition must be on a form provided by the Chamber and available to members at the Chamber office. The petition must be received at the Chamber office by no later than three business days before the Board meeting at which the Board is scheduled to certify the nominating committee’s candidates (in 2009 that is September 17th).” If petitions are filed, an election will occur.

Training the Workforce of the Future Even with an unemployment rate of 9.1% employers are still having some difficulty finding employees with certain skill sets. And, while construction is currently not occurring at the frantic pace of 2008, people will always be needed who are able to design, build, and maintain infrastructure and structures. In efforts to help meet that future need, the Workforce Committee, in collaboration with the Women in Construction Association, School District 51, Associated Builders and Contractors, the Workforce Center and others has organized the second annual Western Colorado Construction Career Day at the Mesa County Fairgrounds on October 6. The event will feature over 35 area businesses providing hands-on training in the construction industry for over 400 eighth graders. The event

was designed to give students more exposure to different career paths and show how their current math and science coursework may be applied in real work situations. If you would like more information on this event, contact Shawna Grieger at the Grand Junction Area Chamber 970-263-2912.

Energy Briefings Schedule is a “Gas” and More... The Chamber’s Energy Issues Committee has been working to assemble another outstanding series of briefings on all aspects of our energy

development and consumption. The series kicked off with a presentation on August 26th by John Harpole, Mercado Energy featuring an updated look at the worldwide natural gas market. The calendar for the rest of 2009 is shown below. All briefings are held at 7:30 AM in the Chamber Lower Level Conference Room.

September 16• - Future forecast for natural gas industry in Western Colorado

September 30 • - Excel Energy on solar and renewable projects

October 14• – Nuclear energy update

October 28 • - City of Grand Junction’s green projects

November 11• - Gas marketing

December 9• - Hydro energy

Amber Rich, a former Mesa State College intern will continue working through year end as our part-time Communications Assistant directing our social networking activities and classes along with general duties.

Brittany Harp, Mesa State College senior will serve as our communications intern this semester, assisting with a wide variety of Chamber duties and functions with an eye toward a possible Chamber career upon graduation.

Kelly Palmer has also joined the staff temporarily as an administrative intern through the Mesa County Workforce Center. She will be assisting with a number of administrative functions including membership verifications.

New Faces at the Chamber The Chamber has not filled a vacant position in our event planning department this year and postponed hiring a Governmental Affairs Manager until this month in an effort to cut costs, a measure that many of our members are likely utilizing as well in the current economy. However, in an effort to maintain the quality of service provided to our members we have turned to part time temporary help and will be utilizing two interns this fall to assist with the permanent staff workload. Please welcome these three temporary additions to your Chamber workforce.

Shalona McFarland, DC Abundant Health

I believe fully that as this country tries to adopt the same health care system as Canada, it will be a vast disaster. When congressmen are saying if you’re over 56 years old, you have no health care benefits and you should just die, it is obvious they have no idea what this country wants or needs

and that they certainly have no clue because they aren’t close to that age.

Kim LastKimberley A. Last Financial Services, Inc.

As a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) with an emphasis on Retirement and Long-Term Care planning, my perspective on the current health care issue is that we all need to take more individual responsibility for our health. Most of us plan for long lives and want long retirements, while neglecting our

health, nutrition and exercise along the way. This irresponsibility is putting an overwhelming and unsustainable burden on the Medicaid system.

Debbie & Tom Harrison Visiting Angels

We are a small company and only employ part-time help. Outside of the fact that we need to carry personal healthcare insurance we do not believe the bill will affect us.

Thane De Puey Mountain Clear Water Company, Inc.

How can we be nation builders in Iraq, Afghanistan, sub-Saharan countries, and around the world by providing health care, education, and

medicine to those countries, but we will not pay for health care for our own less fortunate to raise them to a better standard of living? In our country, this is a shame and I am embarrassed to see what appear to be well off individuals screaming at our Congressmen and Senators because they believe the congress and the President will take away their health insurance. I see older people upset because the extreme opponents are fueling rhetoric that the “new” system will eliminate Medicare. None of this is true and no one has proposed getting rid of private insurance or Medicare.

Sharah RussellCourtyard/ Residence Inn by Marriott

I think that Grand Junction does a great job with Health Care and I would like to see things go unchanged in our community. I do agree that some areas of the United States need to improve their programs.

Welcome to Chamber Voices, each month we will ask selected members a question about key business issues in the community and showcase their answers so you can see what your neighbors are thinking. If you’d like to be a part of this effort, let us know by sending an email to [email protected].

This month our members speak out about their views on the recent health insurance reform debate.
