Dear Neighbors,

As summer quickly approaches we are reminded of the many wonderful events that

the Women’s Club has already sponsored in 2007. We started in January distributing

grants to the many wonderful teachers who work with our children. In February we

celebrated our friendships, old and new, at our girls' night out. In April we raised money

for our scholarship fund by sponsoring a brunch and style show. (Our scholarship

chairperson, Karla Canchola, will announce the recipient later this month.) Just last

week (May 10) we celebrated our Fiesta Night despite fi erce rain, thunder and lightning.

Laura Smith, Stephanie Schonherz, Susie Thorpe and Mia Crum made this an event to

remember. Look for great pictures of the fun on the following pages.

The Women’s Club Board is always reaching out to the women of Champion Forest

and hopes that our fall events will be an opportunity for more friends to come and join

the fun. Our summer wish for our neighbors and friends is happiness, safety and many

hours of family fun.

Our May luncheon “A Faerie Garden Fantasy” was wonderful. The weather was beautiful, so we were able to have lunch out on the patio, overlooking Raveneaux golf course at the home of Dee Muyskens. During the business meeting, before lunch, our members voted to donate to the esplanade project of Champion Forest. The money donated will help to landscape the esplanade at Champion Drive and Louetta. We are looking forward to seeing the changes this will bring. We are excited to be a part of the beautifi cation of our community and be able to fund such a worthwhile project.

Rita Lakes, Scholarship Chairman, gave a report on the two scholarships given to deserving students at Texas A&M University. This is the 23rd year that the Champion Forest Garden Club has given horticulture and design scholarships to this program. We are proud to do this through the money raised at our fund-raisers.

We also announced the awards that were given to CFGC this year by state and national and garden club organizations.

JUNE GARDENING TIPSJune is the beginning of hurricane season. Remove dead branches and dead trees before a storm is forecast. Also, watch out for trees that are leaning that could be at risk from prolonged rain that could cause them to topple.

If you plan to plant trees, do so between May and August.

Fertilize waterlilies every two weeks. Cut off the dead fl owers. Watch the water level in ponds and replenish when the level drops.

Compost and earthworms are wonderful additions to the garden anytime.

Drought-tolerant plants bloom less when they are watered too much.

Plants that do well if planted in June; periwinkle, moss rose, salvia, zinnias; perennials: conefl ower coreopsis, daylilies, lythrum, summer phlox; Tropicals: hibiscus, mandevilla and bougainvillea.

Plant container-grown crape myrtles and rose of Sharon.

Champion Forest Community Newsletter June 2007 19

If you happen to be one of the Champion Forest residents who drive down Tranquil Park between Maplehurst and Cumbria Drive, you may know the dirt to which the title of this article is referring. The esplanade on Arkdale Court is void of plants, the beautiful hardwood trees need trimming and the irrigation system is ineffective. It’s just a pile of dusty, eroding dirt much like the Brampton Court esplanade just a few months ago.

Last year, an extraordinary and longtime resident whose home overlooks the Brampton Court esplanade approached the HOA for assistance. Our landscaper, Scott Vance of Sundance Earthscapes Inc. (a native plant specialist), established a precedence-setting plan for all of Champion Forest’s smaller internal esplanades. Letters went out to area residents, articles were published in the Champion Forest newsletter, discussions and explanatory memoranda began and soon donations began to trickle in one by one.

Area residents contributed a total of $1,741.51, and before you knew it fi nal touches were being made and the Brampton Court Esplanade Project was completed November 10, 2006. Sometimes, measuring improvement is not always obvious and can be rather slow in coming; however, in the case of the

Arkdale Court

Brampton Court

20 June 2007 Champion Forest Community Newsletter

Brampton Court Esplanade Project it was quite apparent and proved successful as a result of caring neighbors in and around this area, and the collective efforts undertaken by so many. Now, collectively, can we make it happen once again?

Letters asking for direct assistance went out to the area residents of Arkdale Court on April 17, 2007. It is our goal to care for and revitalize this esplanade, as it refl ects the attention to detail and overall beauty of our neighborhood. For your information, the HOA voted to fund the replacement of the outdated irrigation system with an effi cient drip system and has approved the plan for native plantings. Although irrigation is a basic start, we must collect donations for the other landscaping materials in order to initiate and eventually fi nish the project.

Donations are tracked and collected in Line Item 06345 under Champion Forest in Bloom (CFIB) within the HOA expense statement. Several residents have already donated and/or come forward promising assistance. This is a very good start, and possibly with your attention Arkdale Court could soon be an esplanade to be proud of, much like Brampton Court. Unfortunately, the HOA does not have the budget, nor can it justify paying for all of the necessary materials outright.

Therefore, we are counting on assistance from neighbors, either in the immediate area, or from others who feel this is a worthy project to be once again duplicated.

The total cost, including installation, is $2,475.65. Since the HOA has decided to incur the irrigation costs, that leaves a balance of $1,321.40 to achieve. Should the funds received exceed actual cost of plantings, soil, mulch, fertilizer and sod, the residual may be earmarked for other internal esplanade improvement, care and beautifi cation depending upon your wishes. Neighbors pulling together to enhance property values in Champion Forest for all of us is certainly good cause for celebration, and we are making progress, one small step at a time!

Should you be interested in contributing to this project or future internal esplanade beautifi cation, please contact Stella Walleck of Consolidated Management Services at 281-296-9775 ([email protected]@swbell.net), Wendy Frygogleat [email protected]@houston.rr.com or Rozann Janek at [email protected]@sbcglobal.net. This certainly helps in reducing the population, but we as homeowners can also help eliminate breeding grounds.

The following suggestions will eliminate areas on your property that can become larvae infested and thereby mosquito infested.

If you have a pool, check your equipment for leaks or areas of standing water. Mosquito larvas like to breed in water no more than 18” in depth.Small portable wading pools for our children and grandchildren are perfect for breeding. When they are not in use, make sure they are well drained.Check your gutters. Leaves and pine straw will hold water in the gutter and thereby become a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.Irrigation systems are a great attraction for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Make sure that there are no leaks in the system which can cause standing water. If you have water fountains, either large or small, see that they are properly cleaned periodically and make sure that there is no standing water in or around these fountains. If you have shut them down, please make sure they have been completely drained and stay drained.Flower pots and other containers need to be checked for standing water or moisture in the overfl ow pans. Our pesky little friends just love these.

We can all help ourselves and our neighbors by taking just a few simple steps to eliminate these common pest.

Still too many false alarm calls (23 in April, 104 YTD). The CF Fund Board has asked that repeat offenders be tracked. It takes 20 minutes at the cost of $15.00 to clear each one. That is time taken away from patrol. Please have your security alarm system repaired to prevent this problem.

Time to fi ll your hurricane supply list. We already have had a subtropical storm off the east coast.

Warm weather has arrived. Try to stay cool.

one that will enable us to take some necessary and vital steps in the next fi scal year here at the Rep.

You’ve probably heard me say in my curtain speech that, “Only 50% of our operating budget comes from ticket sales!” This is, unfortunately, the truth. So, making a donation today, no matter how big or small, ensures that you will personally impact the growth of this theatre and keep it going for years to come! Your donation not only goes to underwrite the growth of the great artistry and performances on The Texas Rep Stage, but it will also allow us the ability to make every patron’s experience at the theatre one of ease, relaxation, and delight, which is what it should be!

To make a more informed decision about your gift, see the Wish List (on adjacent page). These projects are where your generously donated dollars will go in 2007! Become a personal part of that growth and the ability to serve our community by making your important gift today! Thank you so very much for your consideration!

Celebrates 1st BirthdayDear Friends of The Texas Repertory Theatre Co.,

As many of you may or may not know, we just turned one year old here at The Texas Rep! That’s right! It is hard to believe that we have been producing professional theatre for the NW Houston communities for over a year already! Time just seems to fl y by when you are having so much fun and creating great theatre and opportunities for the people in your community! We have been truly blessed over the last year to have friends like you helping us in our quest to produce the best quality theatre we can, provide NW Houston with a new educational and cultural outlet, and positively impact our local economy by having a professional theatre, right in your own back yard!

Recently, I have been asking all of our patrons to consider making a renewed commitment to The Texas Rep as we begin our second year of production. I have asked that every one of our staunch supporters, donor friends, Season Ticket holders, and even our single ticket audiences at each performance consider making a “Birthday Gift” to the theatre company. This gift should be something that is important to you, and

When the curtain dropped on the fi rst act of Proof, the Proof, the Proofaudience (me included) uttered a collective “Ohhhhhhhhhh!” Then we realized how caught up in the performance we had been and laughed at ourselves. A few seconds later, there was a collective buzz trying to work out the end of the play as we impatiently waited through intermission.

If you have not tried it, please do. Why don’t you try out season tickets? It has been a great investment for my family. I think you will thoroughly enjoy it.
